I never understood that stereotype. Chicken and Water Melon are amazing.

The problem here, is that watermelon and fired chicken are staple of the Southeast US, which most African-Americans took with them when they started migrating away from this miserable hellhole. The actual staple foods are weird 'waste' parts, like chitterlings, pigs feet, and 'neckbones'. I don't get that shit. This isn't the 40's, if I want to buy a steak, someone will sell me a steak.

Sage, because this is a troll thread.

You only say that because you have black ancestors somewhere in your family tree.

Jep. Also pigs feet or "Schweinshaxe" as we call it is as german as it gets.

Watermelon must've been popular because of how refreshing it is on a scorching hot day.
Also, it's quite obviously designed for hick eating..just cut into slices and dig in, and spit out the seeds.

>what is poverty food
you are touching on an interesting subject, if only glossing over in your response. the result of the social/economic climate of a region and its effects on the cuisine. The staples of the american southeast were established well before the 40s however, mostly during the era of the civil war and reconstruction. In regards to the stereotypical "black" cuisine, why do you think it comprises mostly of "waste" parts or extremely cheap cuts, root vegetables etc? because it's all they had.

its actually a very interesting topic and one i every once in a while revisit, to trace the migrations and how food spread etc. then crack open a history book and watch the worlds history unfold via food.

the one part of the op presented stereotype i dont get is grape soda, but meh.

Grapico, NuGrape, and Grapette all originate in the South. Though honestly I've never seen much grape soda being drunk at all.

I've noticed that it's not grape soda necessarily, but it's fruit sodas that are really wanted.

I don't know. I went to a mostly-black college, and almost everyone loved grape soda, but I was the only white person on campus who did. I've always liked it.

Slave masters would feed the leftover meat scraps to their slaves when their butcher was done stripping an animal of all the good parts. Same reason that collard greens are so popular in black southern cuisine, the "greens" were usually just the leftover roots/leaves from beets and turnips. All this got internalized as a cultural cuisine after a generation or two, if you raise a kid on the worst gruel he'll eventually learn to love it and even embrace it as a part of his culture.

>> No.5043833

I'm black and my favorite black food is fried chicken I guess. I rarely have it though. I personally grew up on cajun cuisine, not pig's feet or "chitlins" or collard greens etc.
