Aw yus.

Look what the mailman left for me today. Really excited about both, which should I try first? Not tonight though, I'm still in hardcore hangover mode.

Whisk(e)y thread!

Old Pulteney's alright. That's usually what I go to when I can't afford any better but I want the baseline single malt flavors. Cardhu isn't my favorite -- I like malts with a little more going on -- but it's hard to taste a malt that's been aged 18 years and not appreciate that smoothness and complexity. I wouldn't ordinarily touch the 12 YO but the 18 is quite pleasant.

Allright, thanks. I heard a lot of praise for the Pulteney on /ck/, so I wanted to check that out.
The cardhu was on sale at my whiskey dealer so I got a bottle too... I mean it is the single malt that flavours johnny walker. Also I'm not exactly a fan of too much peat so I'm excited.

Been sober for six months, but I'm finally getting off of probation this week, so I went to the store and picked these two up. The Buffalo is a gift for a coworker's new place. He's not a big whiskey guy, so I'll most likely end up drinking most of it. The rye is for myself the day that the glorious overlord PO calls and tells me the judge signed my papers.

Skipped on the scotch today as I forgot how expensive my uppity white suburban liquor store is ($53 for Glenlivet 12. Hah, fuck that).

Most of those are whiskys that are created in immense amounts and sold all over the world. That doesn't make them bad per se, but they are very industrially produced and are vatted for a wida audience so you won't find much complexity in there. My suggestion would be to go to a bar that has a reasonable selection like your list and try some glasses first before you buy a bottle each, throwing money out that you could invest in a whiskey you really like (If you have a whisky store that would let you try some even better).

No, but I can give you my personal recommendations

>Pretty much anything by Four Roses
Bulleit is actually made by the Four Roses Distillery, who then sell it to Diageo to be sold under the Bulleit brand name. So that might be a good place to start. Their Small Batch and Single Barrel expressions are fantastic, and well worth the money if you want to treat yourself to some truly great bourbon. The Yellow Label is alright too, but honestly I prefer Bulleit. Bourbon needs a higher ABV to shine, even more so than scotch, and the stuff bottled at the bare legal minimum 80 proof just falls flat 9 times out of 10.

>Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig 12 Year, Wild Turkey 101
These three have nothing to do with each other, but they're all solid whiskies in the $18-25 range. These are my go-to, general use bourbons, nice enough to sip, but cheap enough that I don't feel bad mixing with them

>Eagle Rare Single Barrel
Made by Buffalo Trace. Just a bit more expensive than their namesake whiskey, and just a bit better. This is a great one to serve to company, since the gorgeous bottle makes it look more expensive than it is. It can be a little inconsistent, even by single barrel standards, but I've yet to get a bad bottle

>Elmer T. Lee
This is one of my all time favorites. Despite only costing $25-30, it can hold its own against bourbons that cost twice that. It has an odd, slightly sour note, almost like a chardonnay. Some people find that off putting, but it's generally regarded as a really, really great buy

Whats the story on sour mash whiskey?

My dad said one time he had a sour mash and he fell right in love. Went looking, and all I could find was jack daniels sour mash whiskey.

I'm also in a state where they cant mail alcohol to me, and stores have very limited selection. Is there any way I can get high quality booze to myself?

I really doubt that is the case. Otherwise you would not feel the urge to declare it emphatically in a thread that has nothing to do with Japan aside from the fact that there is single malt whisky that comes from there (which happens to occasionally win awards, granted by people from Scotland).

It sounds like you grew up a culturally deprived life and developed a fascination with Japan because some element of their NEET-pandering pop culture struck a chord with you.

I hope you understand this is extremely unhealthy and not a socially acceptable interest. If you save up for a year you should be able to afford a vacation there. Confront your demons so that you can move on. I know a guy who did this and, oh wait, he's still there teaching English and being useless lol. HEY MAYBE YOU GUYS WILL KNOW!
Is there any way to rid myself of not being able to drink whiskey anymore?
When I was 17 I had a terrible hangover and vomited the whole night after finishing 1/3 handle of Jack. It was stupid but people were doing shots... Ugh.
I used to not be able to smell it, but now I can without a problem. I just still can't drink it and I'm now 23.
When I go out with friends and everyone gets to indulge in a glass of Jameson, I have to ship it and settle for something else. No whiskey shots, no nothing =/
I tried on Halloween this year and managed to keep it down for about 10 minutes before vomiting.

tl;dr I got super sick and can't drink whiskey.

Any suggestions?

I bought a bottle of this stuff and really liked it. Had sort of a chewy, bready texture to it that gets even better when mixed with other whiskey. Can anybody recommend me some other wheat mash whiskey?

Do I even waht to know what that shit is?

I've never seen that before, but it appears to be bourbon with a high proportion of wheat, and no barrel aging.

For them it probably also means no added color, since (I'm guessing) your average whiskey is browner than it ought to be, on account of the caramel color which makes it look more appealing in the glass.

>> No.5022254

>>5022241
Unaged/oaked bourbon. They call the combination of grains used to make whisk(e)ys a mash, so this one has wheat (as the secondary grain, since bourbon needs at least 50% corn in the mash and it's usually more, plus there's likely a bit of rye in there too, so "wheated" just means more wheat than rye but doesn't give you any real insight beyond that).

>> No.5022260

>>5022249
>I'm guessing
Wrongly. Bourbon can't legally be called "straight bourbon" if it has added coloring agents. Unless you're getting the cheapest bourbon in the store, the color comes from being oaked.

And they aren't allowed to call it "Whiskey" without the 3yr aging.

What I was asking was for any *aged* whiskey that is heavily wheated. I like what it does to the character.

I'm fond of rye mash bills, so yeah... but Maker's Mark is probably the most popular wheated bourbon. Assuming you're looking for wheated bourbon and not wheated whiskey, which could be up to 100% wheat (Bernheim is interesting if that's what you're looking for).

Oh, or you could just check this list. Which may or may not be comprehensive, but still. It's a start.

Doesn't have to even be bourbon, just whiskey where the wheat shines through. I'll take a look at that Bernheim.

>> No.5022524

>>5022489
Though they're often sold/talked about as "rye," the big name Canadian (so Canada Club, Crown Royal, and Wisers) whiskeys have a big wheat component . They used to actually be rye whiskey, but wheat appeals to the average drinker more than rye, and unless it's sold as "rye whiskey" almost all "Canadian rye" has a far heavier wheat component than most would expect.

>> No.5022698

>>5022524
Okay, I just went to the bottle shop for some Bernheim. It's nice, but not quite worth the $50 I shelled out for it. I think from now on I'm just going to blend my own whiskey using that White Dog.

canadian whisky makers can (and always do) add a fuck ton of neutral grain spirit to their stuff POST distillation. and it can still be legally called 'canadian whisky'.

There's a move towards some good stuff lately. The 40 Creek stuff, or Lot 40, or Dark Horse (though that one still takes advantage of the "add shit" angle by being 95% rye and 5% unlisted cognac added after the fact). Plus the upper shelf standards like Century Reserve 21 or Wisers Legacy usually won't have neutral spirit added. But yes, most of the name brand stuff is terrible and rightly derided for many reasons, including that.
