Hot and sour soup is basically a bastardization of a Chinese recipe. In take out places they use Chinese black vinegar, salt, msg, and black pepper to get the tasted, then thicken with a cornstarch slurry. For the solids, it tends to be wood ear fungus, canned bamboo, and egg (as in egg drop soup style).
