What are the best smelling dishes to cook? The kind that fills the whole house with an aroma for the whole day that you want to sex leg forever.

Baking's a good choice, usually. I think Good Eats covered this in an episode.

Here we go: Season 10, Episode 3, "House of the rising bun". He tries to figure out what scents would be good to have in a house if he's trying to sell it. He makes the following dishes:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/overnight-cinnamon-rolls-recipe/index.html

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/overnight-monkey-bread-recipe/index.html

The suggestion is that cinnamon, bread/yeast, etc, are all good.

I think meats tend to smell a little off as the day wears on, and I'd avoid fish and the like altogether.

Aye, bacon, garlic, and red onions cooking in a cast iron skillet with a bit of oil really smells awesome. It's a good base to use before adding other ingredients.

Just about anything done in a slow cooker makes the whole house Snell amazing. I do chili in mine, and that always turns out amazing.

Cinnamon rolls, apple pie, caramelized onions, garlic, yeast breads.

If you just want the scent of baked goods, but don't wan to have to bake, you can fill a pot with water, and add a stick of cinnamon, a few cloves, and some vanilla and simmer it on low heat for hours. Orange slices are good in there too. A fresher, more clean smell can be made by adding sliced lemon, fresh rosemary, and a little vanilla to the water (this is what they use in Williams-Sonoma stores to give the stores a pleasant, homey scent).

Pretty much everything... god I love walking into a house when someone is cooking or has just finished cooking. You don't really realize the smell while you are doing the cooking but if you walk away and come back you can really smell it. Man... I'm hungry just thinking about the smells.

This. I cooked Spanish Mussels (fresh, had to clean them myself) with Chorizo in a tomato-wine sauce last night. The house smelled so fucking good. My roommates were practically drooling over it.

Pretty much anything cooked in a crock pot.
It just sits there all day, slowly cooking, slowly emitting those sweet aromas.

Definitely.

Garlic, onions and rosemary go together very well in the nose. Onions in first, pretty soon (30 seconds?) after, add the garlic and rosemary.

I also like roast chicken, I rub a herb and spice mix (usually includes garlic) on my chicken drumsticks before roasting, smells great.

It's actually really simple. The hardest part was cleaning and prepping the mussels (you could buy pre cleaned or frozen if you'd prefer).

>2 lbs of mussels
>1 lb of chorizo (either ground or sliced approx. 1/2")
>1 yellow onion, finely chopped
>4-5 tomatoes, seeded and chopped
>4 garlic cloves, minced (more or less depending on your preference)
>2-3 tbsp of fresh finely chopped parsley leaves
>1 1/2 - 2 tsp of roasted/smoked paprika (the recipe called for 1/2 tsp but I wanted more)
>2 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes
>1-2 tsp of freshly ground black pepper
>4 tbsp of butter
>1 cup of white wine
>1/2 cup of heavy cream (more or less depending on desired "creamyness")

1. prep the mussels
2. brown the chorizo in a large saute pan (6 minutes or so). Remove chorizo with slotted spoon and place on paper towels. Remove any little bits from the pan but save as much of the fat from the pan as you can (about 1 tbsp or so).
3. Add the butter and fat back into the pan
4. When the butter is melted, add the onion, paprika, red pepper, and pepper. Cook and stir until onions are tender (4 minutes)
5. Add in the tomato and garlic, cook and stir for about 2 minutes
6. Add the wine, heavy cream, and parsley. Stir in chroizo. Add mussels and bring to a boil.
7. lower heat a bit and cover, cook until mussels have opened (6-8) minutes.

Make sure to serve right away and goes great with french bread (I served it with grilled sourdough last night). Also remember to discard any mussels that have not opened.

Hope you enjoy it.
