What a shitty thread over all. No one even mentioned any recipes, not OP, and not any so-called vegans.

I personally don't usually buy meat, but will eat it when it's about. I treat it like a dessert, not a staple.

I learn from youtube :(

RECIPES:

>I've sliced up zucchini into "noodles". I made a cilantro sauce for the top, but that was an awesome recipe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQJzK4P8N5U&list=PL7Hvi6LUJ-5xM3jgE7UIGECR3ODhX6VGc&index=4

>Grilled Veggie Pasta Salad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB9nQNJoVUc&list=PL7Hvi6LUJ-5xM3jgE7UIGECR3ODhX6VGc

>Pilaf is always nice. I've started getting vegetable stock from the Asian market, which is always lovely.

>Speaking of the Asian market, go get fresh noodles and begin combining with everything. Enjoy.

>Last but not least, rice. I usually go get random veggies I'm not familiar with, stir fry, enjoy. But mostly I get bok choy, cabbage, mushrooms, and onions together.

If you mean like fake bacon, fake sausage, and that sort of thing, I'd hazard a guess that it appeals to people who grew up eating the real meats, so it's a familiar texture and flavor that they like. If you mean things like fried tofu or seitan, I think its resemblence to meat is more or less incidental...nothing against beans or wheat, but it's nice to consume them in different form factors with different cooking properties than just regular beans & whole grains.

I really really don't get what the issue with 'meat substitudes' is. I can understand if you avoid them if you're a vegan for health reasons, because some of that stuff is full of crap, but some things are fairly nice and not even all that bad for you, if consumed in moderation.
I don't really eat that stuff because it tastes 100% like real meat, which most of it doesn't anyway, but because it tastes good in itsself. I don't really consider most stuff meat 'replacements', but alternatives. Like, there is beef, bacon and chicken, and there's tofu, seitan, lupine and bean burgers.
I really don't get why people keep going on and on about it.
I also don't get why people keep complaining about stuff not tasting 'like the real thing'. No, it doesn't taste like chicken, it tastes like fairly delicious, well seasoned lupine, because that's what it is, damn it.

Actually, if you're getting to the source of the nutrients then it's more efficient. Filtering nutrients through somebody else's body is less efficient. Cows, chickens, and pigs all eat plenty of grains and vegetables. Just get to the source directly and you consume more concentrated nutrients, vitamins, and enzymes.

A simple recipe to warm the soul during the winter time.

Piping Hot Cocoa:

3/4 cup plain nondairy milk
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa or carob powder
2 tablespoons raw sugar/turbiando/stevia (for stevia use the equivalent of 2tbsp, it's very concentrated!)
1/8th tsp vanilla extract
dash of cinnamon
dash of cayenne pepper or chili powder (optional for some heat)

Heat liquids together in a saucepan on gentle heat, add your powdered ingredients and whisk until smooth. Best served hot.

Eggplant Tofu:

1 eggplant
2-4 cloves of garlic
1 white onion
1 red bell pepper
vegetables of your choice (I enjoy adding broccoli, asparagus, string beans, peas, carrots, corn, or cauliflower typically.)
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4th cup soya sauce
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 cup extra firm tofu
2 tablespoons sesame oil

Prepare tofu by removing excess liquid and pressing with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels until most moisture is removed. Cut tofu into triangles or squares. Heat a non-stick skillet on medium-high heat and add sesame oil. Add tofu to pan and stir-fry until all sides are golden-brown, be gentle so you don't break the tofu. Remove tofu from pan. Add eggplant to the pan first and cook for a few minutes. Add the rest of your veggies and brown them. Add the sugar, soya sauce, and grated ginger to make your sauce. Cook together until the eggplant is soft and tender. Add tofu back to the pan with everything else and heat through, stirring gently to coat tofu in sauce. Feel free to add a bit more soysauce if it needs any more, or other desired spices to taste. Best served with jasmine, brown, black, wild, or any other type of rice.

Actually, no. Where did you even hear that or what is your source? Farming animals is much less sustainable. You need to cut down large forests and clear lots of land to let them move around, and then you have to have corn and grains shipped in to be fed to them. For meat substitutes they have a factory and they get the ingredients shipped to them in the exact amounts that they need for the recipe. For just one pound of meat you need to use a few thousand pounds of grains which could easily be given to humans instead. And of course don't forget about factory farm cesspools which destroy and contaminate the earth and our water supplies if they're anywhere near one.

Not Immune =/= at risk, at least not in any meaningful sense of the term. Since nobody alive is "immune" to any disease that would imply that we're all at risk for everything under the sun. Better stop eating nuts, you're "at risk" for an allergy. Better start monitoring your blood sugar all day, every day--you're "at risk" for diabetes. Better start wearing ankle and knee braces--you're "at risk" for a sprain.

"at risk" means you have verifiable, diagnosable condition(s) which put you at risk, such as pre-existing diseases or a genetic predisposition. That does not apply to the general public.

The study shows a build-up of plaque in the arteries over time caused by egg consumption. What this means is that eggs contribute to vascular disease, and so the only people not directly at risk of vascular disease are the ones who aren't eating them and are lowering their saturated fat and cholesterol intake.

These diseases don't come from nowhere, you get them from diet. Using your diabetes example, someone who eats a diet that doesn't promote diabetes doesn't really have to worry about getting diabetes, but if they change their diet to include ice cream and donuts and other fatty, sugary foods, they would be considered "at risk of developing diabetes" and then you'd be on here defending ice cream and saying it's good for you

No, they come from other conditions or genetics. Your diet can make them worse or can help, but they don't magically appear from nowhere.

Hence why some people can eat massive amounts of sugar and never get diabetes, or other people can eat massive amounts of fat and not develop heart disease.

Here's a 105-year-old who eats bacon every day. That makes it pretty clear that eating saturated fat does not necessarily cause heart disease:

The study, which analyzed the diets of more than 440,000 people between the ages of 35 and 69, found that eating processed meats in moderation–less than 20g per day–could prevent an estimated 3% of premature deaths each year. As The Atlantic pointed out, however, that’s equivalent to a matchbook-sized portion. An earlier study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine last March found that even a single serving of processed red meat (yes, that includes bacon) increased the risk of participants dying by 20%. That study tracked over 121,000 doctors and nurses over the course of 22 years.

Clearly bullshit since every human has a 100% chance of dying from something or another.

And again, you're misunderstanding the argument here.

The previous poster claimed that dietary factors necissarily causes disease. I found you a very clear counterexample that shows that isn't always true.

I agree that diet can increase the RISK of disease, but that's not what >>4863285 stated. They clearly said:

>These diseases don't come from nowhere, you get them from diet.

Obviously not, because that woman was the poster child of bad eating habits for processed meats (and saturated fat) yet here she is at 105.

Thus it is quite clear that the diet does not cause the disease but is one of many factors which may contribute to it. Cause =/= contributing factor.

>The previous poster claimed that dietary factors necissarily causes disease. I found you a very clear counterexample that shows that isn't always true.

Yes, diseases form when you eat food that causes them to form. That's how it works. Your example was an old lady who was lucky enough to be able to handle bacon better than other people, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't have been healthier if she hadn't eaten so much bacon. Some people are more resistant to bacteria and viruses, but viruses don't just "increase the risk of influenza," they cause it. You start building up plaque in your arteries from the food you eat and it's not an "increased risk" we're talking about but a countdown to heart failure. You may die of something else before it sets in, but it still exists in varying stages even before it could kill you
