Pizza is American, the possible Italian versions are so different that if you are to find shit that looks like what you'd find at the USA, it's a tourist trap/they're copying the US. Pizza Margherita I suppose but that's honestly not the same.

New York style came first, using local ingredients to change their recipe somewhat (Different tomatoes, different cheese, etc.) and made New York style. Pizza spread slightly, but didn't become that big quite yet. Over in Chicago they wanted to recreate it to better reflect a more macho big-boy type of food (Yup, that whole "MOAR FOOD" goes back way before drive-through.) The Chicago style was born from this.

Both styles were formed before pizza really became a much more popular food, certainly before any chain was formed. Although New York style/thin crust pizza is the kind mainly sold, Chicago Style has enough merit, flavor, and history to hold its own as a real pizza.

Chicago deep dish is a delicacy. It's rich and filling and yeah, it does take a long time to make. There was this badass pizza place in my city that sold pizzas only in half sizes because they were made on fresh baked focaccia. The crust was essentially deep dish because the bread was so awesome. In order to get a full pizza amount, you'd order two pizzas meaning you could choose two different flavors if you wanted to. Then they cut them into 2x4 squares and put them side by side. They had four different kinds of sauces, marinara, spicy, bbq, and alfredo as well as a shit load of fresh ingredients. I used to get caramelized onions, red peppers, and mushrooms on an alfredo pizza with extra cheese along side a marinara pizza with pineapple, bacon, and onions with extra cheese. I like cheese and I really miss Rettangolo's (half pizzeria half arcade with classic games - I think they closed down because the failed health inspection like a lot of restaurants in old buildings).
