Why is macaroni salad, of all things, a staple of Hawaiian cuisine?

>> No.4647518

mayonnaise salads
spam
lots of things piled together on a plate and all covered with the same gravy

they don't really know how to food very well.
I had pork cooked in what I was told was a hawaiian style, it was pulled right off the pig. meat was sickeningly sweet, this was almost 20 years ago and it still haunts my dreams

Because "native" hawaiians are large ass pacific islanders who like to put mayo in everything, even rice.

>> No.4647521

because the Plate Lunch was born of a picnic-cuisine mentality, and Macaroni Salad is a popular picnic staple as it can be made in large quantities ahead of time and transported in your standard picnic cooler.

>> No.4647544

Because WWII/military bases and 50s culture, meaning shelf stable dogfood.

Since Hawaii is an island cut off from long food commerce, this factor is important.

I'm not from Hawaii but damn this is a favorite/mostly present in Filipino parties too. I've been avoiding them since I was a kid, but damn do I want some right now.

>> No.4647663

Used to be - and still is - that Hawaiians depended a lot on importing food from the mainland, especially during wartime when population was swelling. Thing is, in years of less sophisticated preservation and refridgeration, the repertoire was pretty limited, so mayo-laden macaroni salad popped up in several places at the same time as eggs, oil and dry mac were well-keeping materials. Heck, if we go further into odd food trends borne out of American food aid, even Germans gobble up mayo-laden potato and pasta salads, and curry-powder laden ketchup with sausages due to post-war food aid, some Italians say pasta carbonara was born out of servicemen's excess eggs and bacon, Koreans hoard spam like it was made of gold, and the Japanese have funny numbers like their local "spaghetti Napolitana" which is actually spag, ketchup and hot dog all originating from either food aid or then the need to invent something the American servicemen will eat without bitching.

Archaic food tends not to be health food. Back before there was such a thing as an overabundance of cheap, fairly high-quality food, overeating wasn't considered to be a frequent occurrence. As such, archaic food includes a lot of high-calorie recipes that we would typically avoid today. Add also that they didn't have cars--etc.
