Two bits of (sort of) bad news I wanted to address:

1. I won't be hosting the /ck/ounty Fair this year. Unfortunately I can't make the time commitment right now. I know there was some interest in a series of friendly, weekly competitions, and if someone wants to pick up where I'm leaving off, I can send you some notes.

2. On a related note, I can't commit 100% to hosting the /ck/ Challenge next year. If anyone is interested in hosting it, or would like to be involved in it in whatever way, please send me an email.

Thank you so much to all the voters who enjoyed my entries and took the time to grade them,
Thank you so much to heartsonfire and dogsfordinner, who took so much of their own time and money to set this contest up for us.
I really had a blast coming up with and creating my entries, and I really loved seeing everyone else's entries, too. I got so much inspiration from you guys, you really made me have to think outside the box, because your entries were so good (and looked delicious!). There's quite a few of everyone's recipes I'm going to be trying over the summer!
I don't know what else to say, I'm not really used to writing thank you speeches, even casual ones. But just know that I appreciate all the votes and critiques, you made me a better cook and better plater (especially the latter), I appreciate h&d for giving us /ck/s something fun to do this spring, and I'll still be here, lurking around, posting comments, recipes and pictures, like I usually do, but I probably will retire my trip for now. I never used a trip before, and made this one just for the contest.
Since I'm working from home today, I'm going to make a celebratory lunch later! I'll post a pic, LOL.

Well, I said I was going to post my lunch earlier, so here I am. It's a Garlic-Thyme Custard with grilled shrimp seasoned with Herbs de Provence (on micro greens).
This was something that I'd been wanting to make, and I kept trying to think of a way to work it into the challenge, but it didn't seem to fit with anything, really, except for maybe the tapas challenge, but that was already over at the time. If I would have had the right ingredients, I probably would have made a tomato gastrique to go with it, but I didn't have what I needed for that. It was really delicious, anyway, though. I don't know that grilled shrimp is the exact right meat to serve with it, but that's what I had. I mainly wanted to try out the savory custard. I think it would go well next to a grilled steak instead of a sauce or other condiment.

I used about 500g of red beans to make a batch of red bean paste, not realising that the beans would swell a considerable amount after cooking.

Red bean paste is a familiar taste from my childhood, and is present in many desserts. I used the rest to make dorayaki, red bean paste filled sweet pancakes.

I am hoping that both the challenge and hearts+dogs will be returning next year. You seem to have the infrastructure down pretty well and I wouldn't trust somebody else to run it without it descending into a complete snafu.

Mostly work. I'm working for my parents and we're at this growing pains stage where it's like, we're perpetually understaffed for the workload we have but we don't have enough capital to spend it on experts/management system. Doing everything from unclogging toilets to office-y work right now, 8 am to 9+ pm. I can't wait to fucking win the lottery and quit for life.
