What is your opinion on tipping /ck/?

>> No.4506325

It's ridiculous in America.

>go to restaurant
>the food is shit
>the waitress is rude as fuck
>ask to pay
>the tip is already included in the bill
>18 fucking % on top of an expensive shit dinner
>ask them to change it
>they won't
>can't be arsed to make a fuzz about it and leave

>buy anything
>they expect a 15-20% tip

Just fucking pay your employees already, America. I already payed for my meal.

Tipping is for when something is extraordinary, that is if the food tasted really good for the price you payed or if the deliverer made it to your door fast during harsh weathers.

>> No.4506338

I live in a country where waiters are paid monthly by the owners, so tipping isn't necessary.

I'll usually leave the change for them, and for restaurants I frequent often and know the owners I'll always tip a good amount.

>> No.4506343

>Sonic
I usually round up to the next dollar, which means I tend to tip pretty well, all things considered. Most of the time I go to Sonic, it's for a Happy Hour drink that costs me $1.27. I pay $2, tip 73¢. On the rare occasion I get food, it's usually about $10-12, and I tip $2-3+coins.

>Chili's/Applebee's/etc
15-20%, unless service was damn good. If service was particularly bad, no tip, but it's hard to piss me off that much.

>Fine dining
Can't afford it, but I could see myself droppin' $100 for a $60-75 meal and walking away.

If servers got minimum wage or better, I wouldn't tip Sonic for drinks, and Chili's/Applebee's would get lucky to get 10%. If a 'gratuity' or 'service fee' is included in the price of the meal, I only tip for exceptional service (and it averages 20%).

>> No.4506345

I fucking hate it. Waiters end up disgustingly overpaid compared to the cooks who are actually skilled.

>> No.4506346

>>4506337
why? Because I don't like when people jew out money from me because they feel entitled to a bonus over the actual price I payed? Wouldn't that require them to perform their job more than well then?

Tipping is the most retarded thing mankind ever has invented.

>> No.4506351

>>4506345
This is why I'd like to see servers keep only 75% of their tip or so, and the kitchen staff divvies up the rest. Owners get their "tips" when people buy there at all, but I support financial compliments to the chef.

>> No.4506352

I don't live in a tipping country, and I feel bad for those Americans whose hourly wages is mostly made up of tips. (even though a good server in a good restaurant will make some decent money.) But still sometimes I will tip for extraordinary service or if I don't want my change or whatever reason.

>> No.4506355

I would gladly write the damn ticket myself and go pick up my own food from the damn counter rather than be charged for it.

I disagree. Tipping, as a concept, is not bad. If someone provides excellent service, they deserve special compensation.

I do think compulsory tipping is pretty ridiculous, though.

I used to get tips (bartender/server) and, I mean, it was nice to be given wads of money but I felt like it was stupid. I hate tips, but I always tip about 20% when I eat out, 50 cents - $2 per drink depending on how complicated it was to make (ranging from 'poured a beer' to a 'special that takes 5 minutes at an old fashioned cocktail bar')

I only do it to follow the status quo. I don't want to potentially stiff a server because I worry that their boss might not fill the money gap. The restaurant I worked at also monitored the waitresses tips and if the amount ever dropped they would see it as a sign the the waitress was giving bad service and harass her for it or possibly fire her. (Of course the owner's daughter waitressed too, and if she got poor tips it was just "oh well, stingy fucking customers". Bitches.) This is something that needs lobbying to fix, I'm not going to change it by pissing off a server.

Customers could have been more discerning. Such as, don't tip the fucking owner when she's bartending, she is making 100% of the profit off that 300% markup drink you just ordered. If she helped a waitress or bartender when it got really busy, she took half the tips. Frankly I wish customers would just be bold and ask where their tip is going. /bitter

I'm a waiter and whenever someone asks if gratuity is included I say "nah, we don't do that here. In my opinion that's pretty bad taste'

I make 20% a night. That's $60 - $100. $200 on a good double. I close the store a lot, so that's more money, just also more blacks. I'm fine with it. I always thought i was overpaid for just being a decent person. But then I learned how horrible most people are and how most people I know couldn't make it as servers.

Tip or don't. It averages out fine

>> No.4506484

I rarely go to restaurants of any sort because I am competent enough to make my own food.

But I feel that is it not my responsibility to tip them. It is the people who hired them and supervise them that should do it. ever other job does it. You dont tip a plumber or an electrician do you? No, because they are being paid to do it so there is no need.

If I ever go to a restaurant (which I rarely go to need I remind you) I go for the food I am being served with, not for the service.

>> No.4506489

>>4506484
Your plumber or electrician charges $20-100/hr. A server in the U.S. can get paid as little as $2.13/hr, which only gets bumped up to $7.75/hr (fed. min. wage) if they don't happen to make enough in tips. You're comparing foie gras and KFC.

Some people, incidentally, do enjoy the experience of dining out. Dining is not restricted to shovelling food you didn't make in your mouth.

Are you trying to compare serving skills to cooking skills. Yes, there are "skills" involved in the same sense as whistling and armpit farming are skills, but a server is not a skilled worker like a cook, carpenter, electrician, etc.

>> No.4506511

>>4506498
It's academic information, since it almost never actualy comes up, but still...

This law only applies to a work week. So if you get 2 tables on slow weekdays and make $15 for a 4 hour shift, but then you make $100 on friday. it averages out and the employer doesn't pay you anything more. I don't know if my math's right, but you get my meaning.

They make that much because they have businesses expenses (a lot of them), the work is unreliable, and they actually spent time learning skills that are valuable. If they don't get work, they don't get paid, it's not some easy serving shit where you have hours and you do them to get money.

>> No.4506522

I work in a corporate place (Ruby Tuesday)

Sometimes I'm a cook, sometimes I'm a server. Sometimes I'm bar, sometimes I'm shift leader.

They all have their ups and downs. Serving isnt easier than cooking. Hell, cooking is just following directions. Serving has improvisation. Try waiting on old deaf people. Or old ladies who try to flirt with you, or dick kids, or people with crazy specific allergies, or drunk people who find out they dont have enough money to pay. I'm not complaining, because I'm really good at dealing with people. But yeah, it's a job. All jobs are jobs. You have to be able to do your job,

Managing though, that's nothing. It's not like I'm high enough up the ladder to deal with real problems. Just handle any problems and do the deposit at the end of the shift. Mostly just stand around.

>> No.4506525

>>4506511
So, worst case scenario, you're still making minimum wage overall. The wage that we've determined as a democracy is the amount we can allow people to pay their customers. Don't tip, and you can fix this shitty situation by forcing owners to pay their waitresses what they're worth (or lose them)

>> No.4506523

>>4506498
But if they made min. wage, they're *starting* at $7.75/hr, plus whatever they get from everyone else. If they're already making that, then like I said, it wouldn't be anything special, and mid-tier restaurants would have to earn even 10% from me. Also,

>unskilled work

Have you ever done the job? I haven't, but I can see it being a lot harder than people in this thread make it out to be. A proper server needs to be able to remember faces (I personally can't), often balance heavy trays on one hand (I shudder to think how many such trays I'd drop), handle hot dishes, and catch all the shit from the kitchen and their customers. Also on a proper server's duty roster is knowing the menu and what the items taste like and what's in them, plus-selling, keeping track of daily specials and missing ingredients, etc.

I wouldn't tip the woman at Whataburger for bringing my tray to my table. She's carrying a cool tray in front of her with both hands with less than five pounds on it (helps not having dishes). And she's getting min. wage or better. But there are a lot of differences between Whataburger Woman and Jean-Philippe Susilovec.

Unskilled work isn't an insult, it's a category. If you didn't have to spend time and/or money on learning to do your job before you got to do it, you're not a skilled worker. Skilled workers get degrees, or work apprenticeships for many months to years.

>> No.4506534

>>4506523
It's not about balancing and remembering faces. It's about upselling things and selling alcohol and above all it's about pacing and timing.

It's just a sales job. You have a right to dislike sales people, because they tend to be dicks, but that's all serving is. Instead of selling you on why this granite countertop is better for your kitchen than that laminate, they sell you on how that top sirloin is better for your night than that shrimp Parmesan, and how a $11 glass of cabernet sauvingion would go great with it.

I'm not a waiter, but I've got to say that I love the concept of commision work. Do your job, get paid. Do it great, get paid more. Do it poorly, get paid less or nothing. I kinda wish all jobs were like that. I bet work across the board would improve.

>> No.4506553

>>4506523
severs wrote down notes on the dockets to help them remember faces, and balancing trays of food and drink is easy. just because you lack the skills anon doesn't mean it's hard to do.
plus it takes a maximum of two weeks when you first start out to memorise the menu, after that it's ingrained and so explaining things and up selling is second nature.
this simple shit doesn't mean they should automatically deserve a 20% tip.

It's always an optional gratuity. If the waitress is "rude as fuck" and you don't want to pay the 18% then you subtract it from the total and then write the total without the 18% when you sign the bill. Make a note of the total and if they charge you more then you report it to your card company.
