4433460 No.4433460 [Reply] [Original]

Just watched two documentaries on overfishing, Sharkwater and The End of the Line, and Jesus Christ. No more seafood for me.

- 80% of the world's fisheries are fully- to over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse.
- 90% of the stocks of large predatory fish stocks are already gone.

Depressing as hell to think our grandkids will look at our generation as the bastards that wiped out the oceans.

>> No.4433489

Some fish are definitely going extinct. A few are quite sustainable. Don't buy into hyperbole.

>> No.4433500

2048 seems optimistic. Bluefin tuna is going for a million bucks per fish in Tokyo now. Even something as ordinary as grey sole is now stupidly expensive.

We'll slowly get used to only having shrimp and crab and tilapia, and then compressed plankton blocks will become a thing. Then in 2037 two shitty countries that no one cares about will have a small nuclear exchange that will spiral out of control, and we won't be worrying about fish anymore after that.

That's because Japan just can not give a single fuck about anything.

Like anyone else gives a fuck except some hippies. The only thing special about the Japanese is they like fish more than most countries. Even our western international bodies that supposedly regulate the tuna catch are basically just fronts for commercial fishing interests.

If you like tuna that much, eat it yourself before it's gone. Unless the US Navy changes its mission to anti-fishing, the fish don't have a chance in hell.

Free market will fix it.

They will sooner farm super rare and delicious fish than let them go extinct.

What's more likely is that markets and businesses will fund all sorts of campaigns and research saying so-and-so fish is nearly extinct and a delicacy, hence jacking up the price to absurd heights. Meanwhile the fish is doing perfectly fine. But internet justice warriors that watched a documentary or two will eat up all the bullshit and fund the hype.

Okay so that means that progress and technology at the expense of nature is natural.

Also I notice that a lot of you people seem to be against the industry needed to guarantee first worlders the comforts they enjoy. Don't you realize the hypocrisy that comes from stating that while surrounded by luxury, using a computer, eating food from your refrigerator and driving your car to work?

It;s a misguided notion that a tribal way of life is somehow better than the modern western way.

And I still don't see why you believe this matters. The earth is still going to be here after you die. It won't give a fuck about you, it's a planet. I think the earth could think, it would really appreciate humans going extinct. "oh no, my cancer is gone, now who will appreciate me?"

>>4436163
That is just an assumption.

The earth doesn't think though, it's just a rock. That's my point lol, nothing thinks except for humans so without humans nothing might as well exist.

But the world doesn't stop existing just because humans do. Nothing is required to be here to appreciate it. You only think that way because you're a human.

No, I do understand what you're saying, but I don't agree that it actually matters. I believe that it's just a human concept that we have to be here to experience it for anything to matter.

>> No.4436202

Guys guys, in the scheme of things none of this matters.
Eventually we will all rejoin the interstellar medium, to fuel the formation of another planet that is likely not to have life on it at all.

"We" don't have to be here, but something with the capacity to understand something has to exist in order for that thing to matter. Fleas don't care about the beautiful and poetic, neither do cats or dogs.

Yeah, if you were born 40 years ago, you'd hear the same thing about the world ending but it would be fear about a nuclear holocaust.

That being said, I do think environmental sustainability is important.
