I'm going to a Mexican restaurant called Chiquito's for Dinner.

I'm a brifag and this is the first time I've tried Mexican food. Can anyone recommend anything? I'm fine with spicy food and don't have any dietary restrictions, I just want to try something new and authentic.

Also Mexican food general.

Yeah I get the feeling it's 'Mexican' style food for English people.

I think pulled pork is american? is that worth trying?

Yeah we don't have Mexican food here, Chiquitos is the closest thing to it, but their menu seems to have changed since I went there about a year ago.

Enchiladas are nice. Anything you order will be a mountain high. Their homemade wedges were literally a potato cut into four, I'd avoid them.

Otherwise just order something random and new, it's all good.

except that American style chinese food is pretty much its own food genre. It has a century long history of its own by now. (yes of course chinese food proper has a much longer history). What I'm saying is that there are "american chinese dishes" that you can find coast to coast in america in countless little chinese restaurants that are unheard of in china. Its become its own cuisine, for better or for worse.

English Mexican food is not a thing.

OP is in the minority that he doesn't (or didn't) realise that this stuff wasn't actually Mexican food, but we don't border Mexico here so there is nothing to compare it to. The stuff in there tastes nice anyway.

>>4207389

Yeah but the restaurants don't call themselves "American Chinese restuarant", so it's just as misleading as this place. I agree with your point however.

>> No.4207531

>>4207446
Some places do refer to themselves as Chinese-American, if they even refer to themselves as Chinese at all. They all know the deal; carry their own specialties for Chinese people and others who know real Chinese food and also carry the full array of American-born dishes for everyone else.

This Chiquito's is calling itself a Mexican restaurant, but they're serving lots of American dishes instead - not Mexican-British dishes concocted by Mexican expats to the U.K.

I'm looking for a recipe I had at a friend's house some time ago; it was like that delicious five-layer dip stuff but with rice and chicken, wrapped up in tortillas burrito-style, and lain on top of each other in a glass dish and drizzled with hot sauce and cheese on top. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Links to a recipe? How to keep the tortillas soft even though you bake it?

>> No.4207608

>>4207593

That's enchiladas. It is not a baked dish--except perhaps very briefly to melt the cheese. the filling is cooked first. the tortillas are filled with the pre-cooked contents, and then the cheese and sauce is put on top.

An American variation is the Chimichanga, which is like the above except the filled tortillas are deep-fried to become crispy before the sauce is poured over.

>> No.4207615

>>4207608
I would argue the chimichanga is more of a deep fried burrito than a deep fried enchilada.

Traditionally, enchiladas are baked in the final step, but you are correct everything is pre-cooked before assembly and baking.

Surprised this thread is still here.

Had the sharing platter (between 3 of us) which was good. It was the first time I've had real nachos instead of the stuff you get in cinemas.

Also had the chicken enchilada's which were a bit bland.

The staff were all friendly and pleasant but I don't think any were Mexican. Most of the staff were locals or African immigrants. There were a few dark skinned Arab looking girls who might have been Mexican but I thought it would be a bit rude to ask them their ethnicity.

If you give that same mexican some more supplies they'll bake you up a set of bad ass enchiladas with chicken and mole. And what you're describing sounds like flautas more than enchiladas.

There is a difference between even the best tex mex and mexican food in mexico. It's more rich there (which I personally don't like) and all plates come with chile on the side. Also mostly corn tortillas. That's about the main differences.

Otherwise they make fajitas there. They put cheese in tacos. Everyone eats enchiladas however they can make them taste best.
