I'm getting my girlfriend 6 bottles of wine for christmas as one of her gifts. I'm going to head to Trader Joe's soon, What should I pick up?

Keep in mind, she's young and definitely doesn't like anything dry.

> I'm confused, why would you be buying your girlfriend wine when you aren't sure what she likes?

Agreed. Odd gift to buy 6 of if you are not familiar with it.

> White Zin

Agreed. Back in the day it was only thing I could get girls to drank. That and Boone's Farm or coolers and sangria.

I got the wife all the guys in my dept pic related (one on the right) this year. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouilly-Fuissé Usually sets me back about 150-160 per case (it 15/bottle where I live).

If you find yourself lost in the wine store and don't have any good recommendations, you can use these tips:

- most wine is ~$10 for 750ml. Shoot for the $15-20 range. Don't waste your $ on anything higher than that.

- check the alcohol content. Unless its the really good shit, most wines with high alcohol content (10% or better) will either be dry or bitter.

- if you can figure out if she prefers red/white, be sure to do that. A lot of people have strong opinions one way or the other because of flavor or one or the other gives them hangovers.

The Pouilly is a white btw. All my favs are reds and champagnes, but there's a few whites I like. Champagne is delicious with breakfast. Stop eating all your meals at McD's when you/if you travel.

Most of the breakfast buffets I've been to in EU had champagne. They also had spiced/smoked lunchmeats, cheeses, and even some fish.. usually smoked salmon or the like. I always eat those, as I find the scrambled eggs to just taste weird there (bland).

I brought up the champagne shit, sorry bout that.

There's a nice "travelpedia" site worth checking out that covers a lot of the weird hangups us murrikans have. Every country has them. On that site each country has a section called "Respect" that lists all the things that will get you a poke in nose or ass. In the USA one, it mentions drinking booze before 5pm is taboo. Never thought much about it, but everyone I know who does that would hide that fact. Not the same with beer/wine, especially for lunch. They mention some other interesting crap... Don't ever stand closer than an arm's length from strangers... And the only people it is acceptable to make fun of are fatties and whiteys. True dat honkey mofos. Ah and the weirdest one... Everybody asking you how you are doing, but if you actually respond to the question we say "ahhh fuck off with that, I got my own problems".

Some of the middle eastern ones are lengthy... I recommend taking a course or two before traveling there, you won't even make it out of the airport.

http://wikitravel.org/en/United_States_of_America#Respect

Pic related to the money jar. Where I grew up we had these things. All the fast food places locked their doors at dusk. Only way to get food was to pull up to this contraption. Way it works, if they lift the plexiglass window on their side, it closed the one on your side. That way the homeys don't pop a cap in yo ass. You put your money in the box, then closes, opening up a minute late with your food. I guess that would similar to the german tip jar :p

Oddly enough I've only noticed that to be true among working and middle classes for the most part.

Hang out with rich folks and you could drink martinis at sunrise and nobody would bat an eye. I used to do exactly that when I dated a girl with loaded parents and it usually resulted in her parents chuckling and making drinks for themselves as well

Guaging by what is offered on that table that looks to be a pretty decent 150+ euro a night hotel. When I've traveled I rarely saw europoor plopping down that kind of money to rent a bed for the night. Seems like its mostly murrican there.

Ah good point. A lot of the poorer folk don't "enjoy a beer", they get tore up from the floor up while cheering on Nascar.

At my office we have champagne breakfast everytime some good news surfaces. Everybody has a couple glasses. Our employee handbook just sayd you can't be "intoxicated" on the premises or at a companby function. Since that's a legal doc, I would assume intoxicated would be defined as the .08 or .1 BAC like the state does.

Check this shit out. We have a branch office in Denmark and they do it different. They close the office early every Friday and have an open wine/schnapps bar (companied paid, both time and booze). If you want liquor have to bring your own. They could agree one a few liquors to stock, so they just quit buying it.
