What you posted simply isn't true. The effects of anything depend on the circumstances. It's the same reason why some people freak out when taking drugs while other enjoy the "out of body" sensations.

For a more relevant example, consider ancient rome. Young boys were buggered by older men, yet despite the horrific abuse those boys grew up to be productive, heterosexual, members of society.

Some people can suffer a "life changing" event, lose their sanity and collapse into alcoholism or worse. Other people might suffer the same life change (an injury, a natural disaster, the death of a loved one), feel bad for a day or two, then pick themselves up and get right back on with their lives.
