Monday night drinking. I know I'm not the only one.

What are you drinking and why are you drinking it?

I'm having Jack Daniels tonight (pic related) because it's in my price range (though it is overpriced) and it doesn't give me a bad hangover. I also prefer the taste of Jack over Canadian, Kentucky and Irish whiskey/bourbon in the same price range.

Just finished the last 1/3 of a bottle of Chalone pinot noir. I felt like I needed more so I had a small glass of Compass Box Peat Monster. But I feel that the massive amounts of veal in cream and pork fat I just consumed aren't sitting well with me, so I'm very tempted to open a bottle of Vallana Spanna and drink half of it to take care of the feeling inside me. What say you, /ck/?

op here. Once my Jack is gone I'll be drinking Busch. I normally drink tall-boys but I actually found a place that sells it in bottles.

I like Busch mainly because it's cheap, but I find the taste slightly better than other beers in it's price range (lone star, icehouse, natty, pearl, pbr). It's like a watered down Budweiser. Best enjoyed one degree above freezing and great for when you are drinking for the purpose of getting drunk and you don't care about taste.

Favorite whiskey: Macallan
Favorite Beer: IPA (the hoppier the better)

You were right to recommend this, it is making the terrible feeling go away.

I made this, but with double the reduced cream, and a little extra butter and a tablespoon of sherry vinegar. With fresh pappardelle and 18 month parmagiano reggiano, it was godly, but a little goes a long way.

The job was kind of shit (especially doing first-break opening of pipes. If you ever work at a mill, try to avoid that shit, especially if it's summer. Coveralls+heavy boots+chemical gloves+raingear+hard hat+full-face respirator in the summer, outside, opening pipes full of black liquor (basically caustic solution mixed with all the residue and crap from treating wood pulp). All righty then.

Scotch production is divided into regions, which produce their own characteristic variants of it; generally for starting out you'd want to go for Highlands or Speyside scotch, and avoid Islay; Islay is very fashionable right now but I find it unpleasant personally. Very peaty, quite often briny/iodine flavors as well. Just don't care for it.

My favorites are probably Aberlour A'bunadh, Balvenie's 17-year madeira cask or 21-year portwood, and recently Glenmorangie's Nectar D'Or, which is aged in Sauternes barriques. For stuff that's a bit more affordable, younger Aberlours and Balvenies are generally good, as well as Dalmore. If you really want to try an Islay, the best one in my opinion is Ardbeg.

If you're interested in Irish whiskey, skip right over Jameson's (unless you can find some of their Crested Ten, which is decent), and go for Redbreast 12, especially the cask-strength one if you can find it, or Tyrconnel or Middleton.

As for brandy, generally I skip cognac- it's vastly too expensive for how good it is. It's great, don't get me wrong, but it's become such a status symbol that even questionable-quality cognac, if sold in a fancy bottle, goes for huge prices. Not worth it, imo. Go for armagnac instead; nicer, more complex flavor (again, in my opinion) for much less money.

BTW generally the difference between Irish and Scotch whiskey is A) distillation method (Irish tends to use pot stills) and B) the fact that traditionally Irish whiskey incorporates some unmalted barley in with the malted barley, due to an old malt tax. It produces a different flavor profile than using all malt as Scotch does.
