what cooking shows do you guys regularly watch?

my favourite one atm is "lanz kocht".
it's a german cooking show where once a week about 4 chefs cook something.
every week has a different theme.
every chef makes his own meal.
it's also at 11.30 pm which is kinda nice to watch before going to sleep.

Ready steady cook motherfuckers.
Always watched it when I came home a little early.

And Saturday mornings with Huey's kitchen... I kind of miss that guy... haven't watched his show in years that bitch is old now... Glad he hasn't died from all that god damn olive oil he would drizzle on top. He was kind of like the Australian Paula Deen, only more professional.

what is this show about?
i heard a lot about it on /ck/.

isn't it about some guy going to different fast food restaurants?

I don't believe he's ever done a show from a fast food restaurant. I'm pretty certain I've seen every episode too.

He goes to some high end places and a few side-of-the-road diners - mostly privately owned restaurants that specialize in something. In order to promote their place of business, they offer outrageous eating challenges. He takes on one of the challenges at the end of the show - usually something terribly hot or an enormous portion. However, all throughout the show, he visits places in that episode's hosting city and tries the local favorite dishes.

I've tried two of the restaurants he promoted and both were absolutely fantastic. One was Slows BBQ and the other was Mallies Sports Bar and Grill.

The next time I'm in Denver, I plan on trying a 100+ year old restaurant specializing in various game meats - like bison, elk, etc.

you could also go to restaurants recommend by the michelin guide.

One star indicates "very good cuisine in its category"; two stars represent "excellent cuisine, worth a detour"; and a rare three stars are awarded to restaurants offering "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey."

i imagine they are expensive as fuck though(but prolly worth the money)

The biggest flaw with the Michelin system is it was made for people who eat everything possible, compare eating, and think about eating all the time.

There has been no guide to L.A., for instance, since 2007.

Food that satisfies an average hunger can be an amazing experience to that average person, and completely fail to impress the Michelin brothers.

(And yes, in case you are curious... it's the company that makes tires.)

I'd rather give my wallet a rest and enjoy excellent food at a fraction of the price.

I ate prime rib with sweet potato fries and a salad at Mallie's. I also stuck around and drank about 6 locally made beers. After a 20% tip, I walked out of there spending $44.

That's why the show attracts so many viewers. Regular old blue collar folks find out where the best tasting food is being sold and they can actually go out and enjoy the place once or twice a week.

Unlike Anthony Bourdains $1,200 sushi joint in NYC. Give me a break.

>(And yes, in case you are curious... it's the company that makes tires.)

i actually found that out when i looked for it on wikipedia.
the guide has the micheline man as a logo.

See, this guy makes my point for me.
The Michelin Star system rewards chefs for pursuing Everest - which is fine -

But the average person who wants to eat, should find the proper mix of cost-effectiveness and quality to suit his occasion and location. There will never be a Michelin Star guide, to say, Seattle, for instance.

It is USUALLY best, to refer to the restaurant reviews in the LOCAL NEWSPAPERS. Search history through the last year. (Trust nothing older than that - restaurants are often stormy places, full of change.)

the local newspaper rather promotes than actually reviews restaurants.

iam pretty sure there are similar guides to the micheline one that aim for a different audience

>> No.4059045

>>4059039
When you eat everything possible, compare eating experiences, and spend all your time thinking about eating... you develop a secondary train of thought that is not the same as a normal person's train of thought.

There are many layers of complexity that emerge, such as whether a given dish suits the mood inferred by the climate, season, weather... if the food is presented in a way that naturally represents its ingredients... whether that food is forced together, or naturally culminates in the aftertaste... whether or not the smell suits the taste... and if any of the food's wilder characteristics have been taken away, positive or not.

when a normal person eats, they think about the price, the time it takes to prepare, how much skill they might need to cook it, or how far out of the way they have to go to eat it - plus of course how it tastes and whether it contains things they don't like to eat.

That is not how someone who 'eats for a living' thinks.

>> No.4059054

>>4059045
nothing wrong with that.

obviously the micheline guide is aimed at a different audience.
that's why it's something special.
you expect the food to be very pricey.
but you also expect it to be very good and something the normal citicizen does not get to eat.

>> No.4059062

>>4059054

>a different audience
That audience being the chefs themselves.

I once joked with a fellow that only one man should care if your food earns a michelin star - and he's the one wearing the big white hat.

Everyone else should care about whether the food is well-loved by the average people in the community. What good is authentic cuisine if it doesn't suit the tastes of the people living nearby?

>> No.4059068

>>4059062
that's kinda the point: 3 stars means that it's worth travelling there only to eat their food.

there are other guides for the average citizien.

oh and btw: jiro's suhsi for example suits very much the taste of the people living nearby, it's just of greater quality

>> No.4059072

>>4059068
in that case it's fine.
But in the case of our blood-pressure hero, Gordon "RAWW" Ramsay, several of his Michelin Star restaurants closed down because they couldn't attract enough local business (despite being big popular high review whiz-bang food, people wanted something less 'fusiony', more conventional, and less expensive.)

Really, anything on Food Network and Cooking Channel that isn't Sandra Lee, Rachel Ray, or not about cooking.

I like cooking shows that are actually informative

so basically Good Eats is the only thing that even fits the definition for me

Everything else seems to be "food theatre", "reality food competition" and "travel show where the host talks about food"

what about iron chef?
is there already a version with english subtitles and where to watch it?

>> No.4059961

I watch Chopped, Iron Chef, Next Iron Chef, those Food Network challenge shows (especially the sugarwork ones), Top Chef, regular cooking shows (if I can stand the host), The F Word, Man vs Food and probably a few more that I can't think of.

For wuldblaffs I watch Gordon Ramsay USA shows and those restaurant fix-em-up shows. All dat drama. Robert Irvine is a bro amongst bros though. My friend was at a bachelor dinner once and he was at the table next to them, they asked for his photo, he posed individually for each guy, they talked for like an hour and then right after he left, a waiter came by with a round of shots for every guy from him.

I actually enjoy my share of Topfgeldjäger, which you might also know. I love Steffen Henssler's humor, Frank Rosin is a great judge, at least in my opinion, and I often enough find inspiration for my own meals.

ofc i know it.
i watch it sometimes but not as often as lanz kocht.

interestingly enough like 2 weeks ago or something there was that extremely fat guy being judge and he was like"yo steffen stfu for once, you can't diss frank rosin all the time. that guy got 2 micheline stars but you are not bad either you went to LA to learn from a sushi master..."

i think this was quite interesting because it shows that these tv chefs actuall do know their shit.
you can hate them as much as you want gordon ramsey and jamie oliver are pretty good cooks.
