First off, we've had a lot of fun doing this, and Hearts and I would like to thank everyone for participating, voting, and following the challenge!

Now, on to business – the winner of the First Annual /ck/ Challenge:

stfuboosie !!/MEZC9Vdvfg

Congratulations! I think we all saw it coming, stfuboosie has been a fierce competitor all season long!

In second place: John !96Ltn7sP..
In third place: BubbleBurst
and in fourth place: Anon no. 556 !!tpdJH4SQ2sE

>> No.3952774

I wish we could give everyone a round of applause! As for prizes...Boosie will receive a $60 Visa gift card, a /ck/ coffee mug and apron, and the first ever /ck/ Challenge trophy! John and Bubble will receive /ck/ coffee mugs. Please email Hearts (heartsheartsck@gmail.com) with your address or a PO box number. There's no rush if you need to set something up.

Again, our thanks to everyone for making this happen. We'd like to do this again next year, and we know there's room for improvement. We'll leave this thread up as a Q&A; please let us know what you liked, didn't like, suggestions/comments/criticisms, anything you want to tell us.

I'll also be posting a downloadable pack of all 15 challenge threads and the submission photos sometime later this week.

And finally, some questions we had for you all:

A few people mentioned that summer wasn't the best time for the Challenge, since people go on vacation. Do you think it would work better at a different time of year?

Was the /ck/ Challenge too long? How about 10 rounds instead of 15?

Voting; it's kind of weird to have a cooking challenge when none of us can taste the dishes. Do you have any thoughts on how the voting system could be improved?

Any suggestions for weekly challenges? We have a bunch that we couldn't fit into this “season” and we're always looking for new and creative ways to push our chefs here on /ck/.

Thanks again, everyone!

>> No.3952793

Congratulations stfuboosie!

And congratulations to all the participants, this was fun.

I have been planning on uploading my entries to the ck.booru. Would the other participants mind if I grab other verticals from the contest and upload them as well?

>A few people mentioned that summer wasn't the best time for the Challenge.

I suppose maybe summer was a difficult choice for some, maybe springtime?
>Was the /ck/ Challenge too long?
Yes, it was too long. Ten rounds sounds better, or even 7 with two weeks to complete the challenge maybe.
>voting; it's kind of weird to have a cooking challenge when none of us can taste the dishes.

have a challenge where both the contestant and a judge create a dish the contestant comes up with. Judge must complete all the steps to make the dish that the contestant did.

>Any suggestions for weekly challenges?

yes. Tapas challenge. a challenge where you must copy the exact recipe down to the photo of a famous chef.- maybe the originality score could be replaced with accuracy in this challenge.
More vegetarian challenges.
A pie challenge
and finally a Food Gore challenge where the "appeal" category will be replaced with "gore factor"

Oh wow! Thanks for everyone's votes. I worked really hard on all these challenges, as I am sure everyone else did too. I love it. I will post pictures of the trophy and all the swag when I get it. I may even sneak in another recipe if you guys want. Thanks again.

agreed.
maybe there could be some kind of official challenge where people cook against each other in a real kitchen and the people judging the food get to taste it.
would be awesome but honestly this is merely a fantasy.

anyway i do enjoy looking at these dishes.
i think these challenges are a great way for /ck/ to come up with these practical recipes and stuff.
i wish other boards had something similar like this.

maybe i will try partaking in one of these challenges in the future.
keep up the good work and congratz to the finalist.

I would reduce the qualification rounds to 3 instead of 5 and eliminate more than one contestant per round in the beginning. As a contestant it didn't become interesting until round 10 or 11.

- Way too vague challenge goals. This is a cooking challenge - not a find-the-best-recipe-with-the-widest-appeal-challenge. More than half of the challenges (guesstimate) was pretty much make-whatever-you-want. For me, that was very demotivating.

- The roll challenges are easy to manipulate giving /ck/'s a pretty slow board. I don't see the point.

- I don't get the voting system either - I think it's unnecessarily complicated. I'd rather see a 1 to 10 score and a obligatory comment.

Honestly, the thing I enjoyed most about the contest was watching the other entries. I'm probably not going to participate in another contest unless it's only a couple of rounds (like a Christmas special).

I don't know about the other contestants but this felt like a marathon and I even skipped a couple of rounds. Due to forgetting timestamping, taking shitty images, and burning the food led me to not submit some of my entries - but I did cook for 12 or 13 rounds of the 15 rounds.

Contemplating about what to make, taking images while cooking, editing the images, and making verticals (huge props to stfuboosie btw) takes a shitload of time and effort. Seriously.

Also, the gas station challenge was stupid. Don't do that again.

>> No.3953067

I'd like to see more (I only saw one, I apologise if there were more) challenges where contestants rolled for flavors

>> No.3953078

>>3953067
there were two. One challenge ( that I really enjoyed watching) was the roll for what region the second was the "flavor" challenge as you called it. Anon. is right the rolls could be easily manipulated, maybe the people putting on the contest could roll for each contestant.

>> No.3953158

being specific about the themes is good idea. Have a meatball challenge instead of a cow challenge (consequently that challenge was also a roll for it challenge as >>3953067 was asking after) or instead of chicken have a FRIED chicken challenge. Salad challenge would be specified to a Potato Salad challenge.

I want to know: From ALL the contestants, what their favorite dish to make from the entire contest was.

What were everyone else's favorite dish that ANY contestant made.

If you had a recipe, if your favorite contestant would give it to you, would you make one of the dishes used in the contest?

Has anyone attempted to make any of these dishes?

I made the cookies with the shortbread and the chocolate on top with the chili. It was really good, like a lemon bar but with spicy chocolate instead of lemon curd. I doubled the amount of chili though, because I like things spicy and I used dark cocoa instead of regular.

ok my favorite dish to make was a tie between the Chocolatl Cookie Tarts (because easy and little to clean up for such a yummy cookie) and the Ravigote Spring Rolls (because they are fun to assemble) The Ravioli with the egg in the middle and the butter sage sauce was my favorite to eat, making the pasta without a machine was a bitch though.

My favorite dish that any OTHER contestant made was Anon.'s Squash Ravioli, I want to make that and Bubbleburt's (I think it was Bubbleburst's) chicken entry with the mustard cream sauce-I want it IN MAH MOUTH!

Yes, I would make some of these dishes. I plan to make some of them once the downloadable file comes available.

We really appreciate all of the feedback. :) ZB and I are really interested in hosting a challenge at least once a year and we were really overwhelmed by the positive response from all of you. I'd really like to thank and congratulate not only boosie, but to everyone who participated/watched... Like Anon no. 556 said, the /ck/ Challenge turned into a marathon event and even from the sidelines ZB and I wondered how many contestants would stick it through to the end. Your persistence and stamina (on a 4chan image board, at that!) was really inspiring to watch.

It seems like everyone thinks the weekly challenges should have been a little more structured. Especially after the gas station fiasco (vague premise, vague limitations, etc.), I think ZB and I learned our lesson. ;(

The incentive? I guess to do it, and to do it well.

I have to cook almost everyday anyway, might as well make something extraordinary and challenging at least once a week. I used a cheap sony cyber-shot that is half broken and ages old. Most of my ingredients were inexpensive and locally sourced to make them approachable for the viewer. I like making the verticals anyway, they are fun. I hover from time to time, but I don't dedicate my life to 4chan. I won a trophy, an apron, a coffee mug, and a $60 Visa gift card. I was happy to share some OC with /ck/ and I was able to improve myself.

>> No.3954967

>>3954956
yes, four months is a long time for a contest. Like I said, I have to cook anyway so it isn't going that far out of my way. The prize was originally $50 but John forfeited a $10 prize for winning another challenge and it went into the main pot. I am not sure why the decide on $50 but it's not like this contest was sponsored. Zombie_bisque and heartsonfire put this contest on by themselves and paid for the pizes. I am not sure if anyone else contributed to the prizes but it seems like quit an expense to dole out on your own to a stranger on the internet. I haven't seen the trophy yet. >A few people mentioned that summer wasn't the best time for the Challenge, since people go on vacation. Do you think it would work better at a different time of year?
Spring maybe? If it's made shorter? Fall has back to school for many users, winter has the Xmas crazyness, summer the vacations....

>Was the /ck/ Challenge too long? How about 10 rounds instead of 15?
I enjoyed the challenge, but shorter "seasons" would probably attract more participants. Also stating at the beginning the number of rounds, etc.

>Voting; it's kind of weird to have a cooking challenge when none of us can taste the dishes. Do you have any thoughts on how the voting system could be improved?
It's hard to vote otherwise.. We can't ask the judges to make all the recipes and taste them. So I'd leave the voting as is.
