budweiser is still beer, the reinheitsgebot was never a national german law until the mid-19th century, and even now it only matters in germany, before then it only applied to bavaria - and many german brewers actually picked up on the habit of using rice in their beers. Everywhere else, budweiser is still beer, also, wheat beers don't conflict with wheat beers because they tend to be top fermented beers, which are not very regulated under the reinheitsgebot. Also, while on the subject, budweiser also uses malted barley, and the definition of beer is "a fermented beverage made using grains as a source of starch/sugars.

most "imported" beers (especially from italy/germany and the like) that wanky fucks who think they are big time like to stand around and drink in bars. most of them are not even genuine imports but are brewed here with local ingredients. the ones that are genuinely imported are good, again some better than others, you just have to look for them, not available everywhere.

craft brewers that just mail it in. if youve ever been to wollongong, nsw, there is a place on the beach known to locals as 'the brewery'. it was once under 'five islands brewers' but they might not even be in business any more. this new company is using the same equipment (i imagine) but holy fuck, wish they bought the recipes too. their witbier tastes like sweaty socks and soap. fucking disgusting. the only good beer there was their porter, one of the best ive had actually.

Same brewery, different brew. It came in a 750ml bottle with a cork, and it was 7.5%. It was really good.

This one here is the best beer I've ever had. it's a fruit beer, but it's actually brewed with raspberries, unlike pretty much every other "raspberry" beer I've tried, which are all basically wheat beers with raspberry ester (read: fake-ass raspberry taste) added in after the fact. I don't really understand beer. I've never thought it tasted terrible but I've tried probably 50 different beers and I can barely tell the difference.

The only one I've like a little more is corona and sol. Because they aren't quite a bitter.

I don't really think of that stuff as beer. Obviously I can tell that Stout is different because it tastes like fucking weedkiller whereas regular beer just tastes like dish water that has had pennies in it for a few weeks. I've tried a few stouts and I hated them all and I only ever finished one of them and that was simply because it was my first pint.

American brewing is establishing a standard method, I'll give you that, but it's not a very good one. It certainly isn't revolutionizing beer. American beers, or at least the big name lagers, are pretty terrible as far as quality is concerned. Even so, there's no way America's brewing industry is dominating the rest of the world. The only american beer I see on the shelves over here is Budweiser, and on rare occasions, a bottle of Samuel Adams. You're perfectly entitled to enjoy your american beer and take pride in it, but you shouldn't believe it's making a huge impact in the world. Especially not when most countries deride your beers.

>> No.3883120

>>3883111

There is no standard method, American brewers are always trying new things.

Budwesier and Sam Adams get a 50/100 70/100 respectively, those beers don't represent the US. The best beer that American craft brewers have to offer absolutely destroy anything else in the world.

Don't get me wrong I hate our light beers, our craft scene is where its at. Sadly, Europe's bigger brewers are actually better than our big companies, which are the ones that get exported to Europe and paint a negative image of our brewing as a whole. Although I do have to say Americans don't do lagers very well in general, so there's that.

>> No.3883130

Except they don't because they aren't even close to the best the US has to offer. You can't compare your best European beers to American macro "beers" that companies with a lot of money shit out across the world.

Every brewer in the world is always trying new things. That's why you have different beers. I've enjoyed a good few american ales and craft beers, but I'd have to disagree that it "absolutely destroys" anything else I've had. Even then, they're the product of small-name brewers, which puts them outside of what's trying to be proven here.
Like I say, I respect your opinion, but if you truly believe american craft beer is better than any other beer out there, it just shows you haven't tried enough of them.

Christ, I don't know. The ones I've had have all been at real ale festivals, and you end up trying so many you don't remember one name from another. I don't see how it's all that important, in any case. The ones I have tried, I enjoyed. I'm just saying that there's no sense in outright claiming one country's microbreweries are better than another's when there's so much variety.
Of course, if you've got recommendations, I'd love to hear them. A new beer's always worth trying, assuming I can get hold of it.

I've personally reviewed over 10,000 beers since I was 19. I've had beers from every country that makes them. I've been to every major brewery in the US, and many in England/Germany/Belgium. I've had bizarre Italian beers made with grapes and barley. I've had rice beers from korea and vietnam. I've had corn beers from Peru. All of them are fascinating and beautiful.

If I had to sum up which country was all around the best at beer, yes, it would be the US. However, if we talk about particular styles, of course countries Belgium rocks at Belgian beers. Of course Germany has the best lagers, pilsners, and hefes. However, if you look at the sheer variety, quality, availability, and number of American beers, not to mention they have the best stouts, porters, browns, pales, IPAs, among many others - America has the strongest and best beer culture on this planet.

Just go to Portland, or Denver. Milwaukee, or San Francisco. Kansas City, or Ashville. This country is the best beer country on the planet.

Well, you've made your opinion more respectable, but even allowing for your experience, a reviewer's tastes are still coloured by subjectivity. I disagree that american beer is finitely superior, but again,
>opinions

Still, in any case, that pretty much wraps up what was being said. This came up because the point was raised that american brewing is dominating the world, which was then disagreed with. That doesn't seem to be the subject matter anymore.

I've been pretty objective. I'm not in it to prove american superiority, obviously, I really enjoy beer. I mean... a lot. Obsessive. I've brewed my own.

It comes down to criteria: what attributes make a country the best at beer? What do you consider valid attributes?

Variety?
Quality?
History?
Abundance?

All of these things America excels at, with exception to history.

What beers have you had, American wise? Which country are you from?

Ever had a pint of fresh American Marzen from the brewery down the street, beautifully fresh and non-pastuerized? Or perhaps that IPA out of a firken that only comes out once a year in the spring? Maybe even that collaboration brew they did with the brewery across town, waiting with 100 other townies to get a sip of the single cask that was brewed.

That's American beer to me.
