Im a pretty chill dude but I absolutely cannot stand seeing someone throw away food. I've ended relationships because of it. I have a rule that if I cook/prepare a dish, no matter what happens I'm eating all of it. Bad tasting food cant kill you, all it can do is teach you a lesson on how to be a better cook.

Come to think of it I cant remember ever putting food into a garbage can.

Today my boyfriend made himself dinner and gave me like 10% of the meat he'd made so I could try some. He said he'd eat whatever I didn't want.

I'd made some gyoza, premade frozen kind, to see how they turned out. The answer is bad. So I stood up, walked over to the trash and threw it all in.

"Wait, did you throw away the meat?"
"oh....shit, yea..forgot"

bad taste and smell of food is a natural reason to avoid food going back hundreds of thousands of years. sorry about your autism and poor cooking skills though

>> No.3735354

it used to really hurt me to throw away food, but you could say i've gotten over it. I've worked in the produce department of a grocery store for two years now, and you couldn't even imagine the quantity of food that we throw away. seriously, it used to kill me on the inside to throw all of this perfectly fine food into the dumpster but my management has hammered down on me for so long that i am numb. if a banana has a single brown spot on it, it is thrown away. if an apple has a single bruise or any tear in its skin, it is thrown away. if a plum is soft we go ahead and throw them away for good measure, they'll be rotting tomorrow.

when i started working grocery i actually had respect for food and would try to front the older produce so that it would sell and not be wasted. now, i've been desensitized to the point that any sort of food is expendable to me. i have destroyed a $1000 dollar pallet of bananas on more than one occasion because they had a few spots on them and it was easier to compost than to send to the food bank.

i used to really care about wasted food, but now i am completely numb. everything is expendable, and for everything you throw away there is a replacement in the truck the next day.

grocery has made me a culinary sociopath.

>> No.3735388

>>3735383
I was definitely not allowed to discount it or take it for myself. I've worked produce at two grocery stores in the last two years. WalMart and Whole Foods. Seemingly opposite from the customer, but so similar from a person who works there. They both throw away an equal amount of trash.

I worked at WalMart first, and there they would order a TON of produce in bulk and throw everything away if it was slightly old. I'm talking about throwing away multiple 6 foot tall pallets of bananas because they have a spot or two.

Whole Foods was a bit different, but they threw away an equal amount of produce. There, it was not about quantity so much as it was about quality. If an apple had a microscopic bruise or cut, it gets thrown away. If an orange is the wrong color, it gets thrown away. If a pear is perfectly fine but it doesn't have the right shape, it is thrown away. If any sort of fruit or vegetable has any sort of blemish, it is thrown away.

>> No.3735423

>>3735416

Two reasons come to mind for why they would do this.

1) Let's say Store A tosses out their extra food at the end of the day. Lots of perfectly good food. Doesn't take long before there's not enough food in the dumpster for all the homeless/scavengers there to share; they have to fight or come early to try and get first pick. People coming to the store well before closing time see a line of homeless people next to the store or homeless fights (which can be rather brutal). Not exactly the best image for a store.

2) Weaker argument: some stores will throw out all food at the end of the day. Say Store B closes at 10pm. Would a thrifty individual coming home late from work go in and buy the food, or wait a little while and get it for free? In other words, they make their food inedible so you have no choice but to buy it if you want to eat it.

Arguably, all of food produced in the US should be thrown out.

I manage to keep waste to a minimum, even as a loner who cooks his own food around the year. The only things that go out before they're consumed are breads, which frequently catch mold before I get around to freezing them. fucking this. I work in the produce section of walmart and SO MUCH shit is wasted. We do donations through "feeding america" but the only thing we're allowed to put in there is expired salads, carrots, and chopped up fruit bowls and stuff.

they won't mark down things like bananas when they start to go bad because it's a hassle for them I guess; customers start to debate which ones should be discounted ect ect.

if you take any of the stuff they're tossing out it's basically the same as stealing to them. I think it's because walmart actually makes money off of the crap they throw out, we supposedly sell the stuff as fertilizers and to pig farms and stuff, so they still end up making a profit in the end.

Hardly. There are 15 million lawsuits filed in the United States every year. Check out the numbers on lawsuits over OB/GYNs. If you deliver babies, you WILL get sued. 1 in 4 OB/GYNs have been sued. And the lawsuits that GO TO TRIAL have a success rate of about 25%....not counting the ones that get dismissed before trial. Some areas malpractice insurance runs ridiculously high (51K per year in Long Island, for example) 16% of obstetricians have stopped delivering babies altogether because of frivolous lawsuits. The average cost of defending a frivolous lawsuit in that field is currently $19,500. But lawsuits are filled over the tiniest things all the time because million dollar payouts are common, and lawyers get upto a third for their fees, so they dont care about any actual merits, they go after the cash cow, obstetrics. Is that fucking hippie sleazeball still talking out of his ass about hemp saving the world? I can't tell because I am overtaken by seething rage every time I see naive and unbased optimism.

Just in case he is, though - cut your hair and join the corps, you phleghmatic little queer. You'll do the country more good as a uniformed welfare queen than you'll ever do with your idiotic and destructive semi-religious propaganda about an useless, dope-head aggrandized itchy piece of shit plant. I hope hemp fibers lacerate your floppy hippie sphincter.

I very, very rarely throw out leftovers. I make that shit count. The only times I throw out leftovers is if it's something that just won't keep at all (i.e. consistency changes, texture dissolves, etc.) Otherwise, I'm going to find a way to use that stuff. I hate waste.

>if you take any of the stuff they're tossing out it's basically the same as stealing to them. I think it's because walmart actually makes money off of the crap they throw out, we supposedly sell the stuff as fertilizers and to pig farms and stuff, so they still end up making a profit in the end.

They likely consider it stealing because their employees steal a ton. They usually have security in their stores keeping an eye on employees rather than customers.

If they didn't go after people collecting food thrown out then you'd have employees tossing food that they'd later go to collect.

>I worked at WalMart first, and there they would order a TON of produce in bulk and throw everything away if it was slightly old. I'm talking about throwing away multiple 6 foot tall pallets of bananas because they have a spot or two.

All fruits and vegetables breathe and they breathe out ethylene gas. When the bananas are sold they're often fairly close together which means that ethylene gas is going to build up faster, and when fruits are around ethylene gas they ripen faster.

So a crate full of bananas that have some signs of already turning brown means that by the time it's taken out and put on display you'd have a pile of rotted bananas that no one would want to buy.

Really if you're handling the ordering of produce in a grocery store or restaurant it would be important to check for spots and turn the food down if someone is trying to sell it to you.

One famous story is the coffee story from McDonald's with the woman that stopped in for coffee at a drive through with her son driving and then when the flimsy cup spilled open the searing hot coffee left her with severe burns through her skin so she couldn't use her hands for months. Fast food places routinely made their coffee that hot because of the idea that you'd want to pick up the coffee and have it still be hot by the time you drive it to an office 30-60 minutes later, so it would really be too hot for human consumption.

It really is incredibly difficult to win some lawsuit even when it's perfectly reasonable because people can easily go "lol it's just some spilled coffee" or "lol it's just some doctors' tool stuck inside you".

I worked produce as well and threw away a sinful amount of food. We weren't allowed to discount it, take it ourselves, give it away, or even donate to a food bank. Everything went straight to the compost. I never stole the food, but I have had it stolen from me.

I worked at a WalMart in the heart of the ghetto. One day I was outside throwing bins of produce away and this van rolled up beside me. The side door rolled open and three black as night cracked out niggers jumped out and surrounded me.
>"say boy, I can have them tomatoes?"
>sorry sir, I have to throw them away. I'll lose my job if i give them to you
>"howbout jus one case, ain't nobody lookin"
>No. I'm really sorry sir.
at this point one of the niggers pulls a gun on me and the other two went crazy with my carts of produce. they didn't only take the tomatoes, they took EVERYTHING i had on my cart, including the reusable crates. two tall stacks of produce disappeared in a matter of about 20 seconds.

Reminds me of cooking school. In my purveying class I once had to fullfill a order of carrots. they are all rotten. so I ask the professor If I can open a new case.

But the professor doesn't believe me because everyone else had been fulfilling their orders of carrots all day. So he takes me back to the carrots, takes one look, then opens a new case, throws the open one out, and yells at the rest of the class to redo all carrot orders for the day.

I went to mcdonalds for breakfast the other day, they have these redesigned enviro-friendly cups that leak all over the place.

anyway I spilled some on my hand and I almost dropped the cup on the floor from pain. fingers were still pink the next day.

there's no good reason to serve coffee that hot, it's absolutely ridiculous. that was only an ounce or so on my fingers, I can only imagine an entire 12 oz cup spilled on some old lady's vagina.

entirely incorrect, they still serve it at the same temperature, they just print a warning on it so they can say "durr coffee is hot". yeah no shit coffee is hot, I drink it every day. mcdonalds is the only place from the dozen odd places within a block of my office where I am honestly concerned about being physically injured by it.

anyone who laughs at that lawsuit has no idea what they're talking about.

okay, than per harvest

>> No.3737101

Some quick googling tells me 12-14 weeks per hemp crops. lets assume for simple math that it can grow year round. That is 4 crops per year.

so 60 gallons per acre per year

the epa says there is just under a billion acres of farm land

so total farmland could produce 60 billion gallons of hemp oil in a year

the usa uses 120 billion gallons of gasoline

Its impossible
