Usually the pricier/better a bottle of single varietal wine the more "pure" or "defined/true" it is to the grape it is made with.

You don't need to pay all that much more really. If you like a somewhat inexpensive wine that has a vintage you can research vintage ratings and buy a bottle from an excellent vintage. You should be able to notice a difference.

I am no snob. Picrel is my drinking wine of choice. I buy it by the case to get the volume discount so it comes out to like $6 a bottle or something like that. It's not great. It's sweet and fairly one-dimensional and not really challenging to the palate in any way. But it's tasty and easy to drink and great for a glass of wine before dinner or before going to bed.
