The only exception to that is if I have a raincheck or if I notice a price discrepancy and even then, I don't hold up the queue for the people behind me and just take the receipt and my complaint to customer service.

I go to a chain store (Albertsons), I know multiple other stores are around but the chain grocery store is just a block away from me to I go to that one. They usually only have one or two lanes out of the many lanes they have. I don't know why. So I just go through the self-check that takes two minutes than wait 20 for a cashier.

I live in a city, so that may also be a factor.

I was standing there literally two minutes before it was my turn to get shit scanned. Does your store not have the "ic3" policy? Acme has this thing where if a cashier has three other more people in line, they call someone over to quicken the checkout time.
I also live in a city and am less than a mile from two different Acmes, both of which are quick as a kitten queef when it comes to getting customers out

Shop Rite in Bethpage.
Since they're no longer at 2am I often have to go during morning or afternoon hours. Typically there's like 10 lanes open but there's still a line of 1-2 dozen carts chock-full in front of me for normal lanes.

from what I've seen going to the store at around 7-9pm was there are usually 2 lanes open. Anytime after 9 there is only 1. I do see on occasion cashiers calling on the intercom for more help but they never come. It use to not be this way, it use to be like you said, very quick and easy, then they added the self-check lanes around 2017-18 and seemed like they cut down on the cashiers they hire. Could be they are short staffed now, I always see the same couple people and an occasional new hire who doesn't stay for more than 3 months.

You had a 75% or better chance, anyway, of some error and needing a supervisor for help, which slowed you down anyway. Bagging it yourself is also stupid, especially if you can't lift it up in the air as you go. I want the registers manned by humans, and a conversation about the weather or was everything alright. 10 items or less is good enough for speed.

One store in my area kept accusing me of theft even though I literally never stole anything. This kept going until I made a Karen-like scene over it. No accusations since and the manager gives me a game-ass "hi, how are ya?" now.
Weirdly, they only accused me when I went alone, not when I was with the missus or our kid. One time, I asked why they thought I was stealing and they said, I shit you not, that it was because I put stuff back on the shelf. I'm like "that's literally the opposite of theft, you fucking idiot!"
I had something in my trolley then decided that I didn't want it afterall and put it back where I found it. I guess being a considerate person and putting the mayonnaise back in the mayonnaise section rather than leaving it in frozen foods or whereverthefuckelse is suspicious behaviour these days.
I'm okay with them watching me and scrutinising my movements throughout the store but don't say shit to me and especially don't accuse me of anything.

Take it from someone who just got out of retail management after 12 years, these things just aren't worth it. Not only do staff have to baby them anyway, but they're the easiest fuckers to steal from and I assure you that a LOT of people have no problems committing theft when they don't think anyone's watching. Protip, an awful lot of canned food is the same weight, 400g. Scan a cheap can of foods then put a can of expensive chilli down, it doesn't know the difference because all it's looking for is the item weight.

Considering how expensive they are to buy, install, and maintain, it costs less in the long run to just hire a cashier. The huge upside to humans is that during downtime you can have them go do other jobs.

Self checkouts shitting themselves has nothing to do with the area you're in and everything to do with competence at the company you're shopping at. The big supermarket near me is near a relatively bad part of town but I could count on one hand the number of times I've had an issue with their self checkouts, they're just fast and work. The company I just left had self checkouts that were fucking abysmal despite being in the same sort of area. Failing to weigh items properly was only the tip of the iceberg honestly. Sometimes the printer would fail, sometimes they'd crash when someone scanned their store membership card, sometimes they'd straight up refuse to either let the customer pay or clear the transaction forcing staff to reboot the whole thing by spam pressing the reboot button on screen that would only appear for half a second once this particular error happened. There was a period of about 12 months where they wouldn't play an audio message saying whether the customer's payment had gone through, meaning lots of customers would use their contactless, assume it worked, and leave with a bunch of free shopping because the card machine just didn't work without them knowing.

The failure of self checkouts is a symptom of the competence crisis more than anything honestly. Never hire a manager with a business degree.

Walmart has ones now that combine weight and a camera to detect if you swapped an item out. Policies and equipment vary by company but you are 100% incorrect that they're not adjusted by the level of theft in an area. But you sound like you know everything about everything, so doubt I can convince you of things I have first hand experience with setting up, therefore you may consider this a person concession to you. Dance around and enjoy your dopamine. Everybody else: this kid is babbling on about shit he doesn't know anything about. Solving the problem by making the self checkouts even more expensive only makes cashiers look even better. If you want the checkout to know if an item is correct from a picture of it, that means the checkout has to know what EVERY SINGLE ITEM IN STORE LOOKS LIKE FROM EVERY ANGLE, assuming the picture it takes of the item you scanned was even good enough. Sounds like middle management attempting to solve problems the only way they know how: by being stupid.

>>20241404
I have first hand experience actually working in a store you stupid fuck. You have NO IDEA of the scale of petty theft, and neither does the company. Every piece of stock that can't be accounted for gets thrown into one giant "leakage" figure. But leakage encompasses lots of things, like damaged stock, out of date stock, and stock that never arrived.

I promise you, the self checkouts where I worked were not shit because of theft in the area. Our regular customers avoided using them because of just how bad they were. Sometimes they eat money. Like, the customer puts cash in, the checkout takes it, then the checkout sits staring at them as though they haven't put any money in at all. We'd go back on cameras and watch just to verify, and this shit would happen all the time.

You need to stop assuming that large companies are competent, because holy fucking shit dude. Though honestly the company I was at was so badly managed that it would blow your mind. They don't even report profit, they just report losing a mountain of money every now and then and raising prices.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/apr/17/co-op-group-loses-billions-failings-in-management

A few years ago they quietly reported a half billion pound loss. Not in operating costs, but they'd literally just lost the money. As in, had no fucking idea where half a billion in cash had gone. Fucking lmao don't talk to me about where I've fucking worked.

>I hope this happens to my local Walmart. The self-checkouts actually outnumber proper manned registers, I'm not even kidding.

That's not even news to me. I've lived in 3 different states in the last 10 years, on 3 completely different sides of muttmerica. Most Walmarts only have 1 or 2 manned checkouts, and the vast majority of the time nobody's actually working them despite the large amount of employees who hang around the checkout area. Most of the time they have a couple poojeet workers who roam around and """help""" you when their dogshit machines inevitably fuck up and they need to bring their smelly asses over to unlock them for you, but nobody even works the manned register, Walmart and it's poojeets just expect you to always fo self checkout nowadays, that's the default. I don't think I've ever seen anyone working the single manned checkout at my current Walmart, not one single time, and again, this isn't an employee thing because recently the greeters have been asking to see my receipt before I leave, Costco style. But instead of hiring more cashiers, they'll just force existing employees to do more jobs. You see how convenient it is for Walmart? They get to simultaneously hire less people and force those same employees to do more work and have them be another way screen for theft, which is the self checkout's greatest enemy.

It's almost like these billion dollar corporations are pretty smart in how they do whatever it takes to extract the maximum amount of profit from the dirty plebs who buy shit from them. It'd be devious if this was a fictional story, but nah unfortunately it's just real life.

Case in point, Costco is notoriously shitty. They hide the scanner guns and you need to get an employee to use them. AT A BULK GOODS STORE. Then they have a warning for heavy items telling you not to put them in the bagging area. Yes, the BULK GOODS STORE decided it would be a good idea to cheap out and get machines with baby scales. Also half the time a wagie tries to come help scan items anyway because "looking busy" is the name of the game at Costco. No, wagie. I chose self-checkout because I didn't want to talk to you because you all seem disgruntled. I visited America (the land of the free) for the first time back in april.
Went to a grocery store, and it had like 30 small checkouts with one worker at each station, who packed the groceries in front of you will they scanned them.
The fucking weirdest set up. The store wasn't even big (I was in Jew York). Yet had 30 people working just in the checkout. Where I'm from like 6 is enough for a store that is 2-3 times bigger.

Is this normal or just a NY thing? Also, they all waved numbered signs every time their checkout was free.

This is literal FUD, large grocery chains aren't eliminating self checkouts. Huge companies, the Walmarts, Amazons, Delhaizes and Krogers of the world, know they will have things scanned wrong and will lose some money/product to the checkouts. It's called shrink, and every retailer accounts for it in their maths; large stores can absorb more shrink because they also sell far more product.
To Walmart, Kroger, etc, the savings of running a self checkout system are worth the increased shrink-- don't have to pay a wagie to stand at the counter, you only need one or two for about 20 checkouts now, the other workers can do more floor work, people can check themselves out as fast or faster than the typical granny they'd put on the register in the first place, faster lines means more transactions per hour, which is more money per day, custies are more satisfied by a convenient and fast experience and likely to return, so on.
You see self check disappearing from places like ALDI, which runs on razor thin margins as the deepest discount retailer, ShopRite and KeyFood, which aren't a chain in the typical sense (it's a co-branded confederation of independently owned stores, essentially franchises) and overall smaller chains like Trader Joe's or Fresh Market.

TL;DR these articles are Jewish fudding designed to scare you and demoralize you, an attempt to scare you into ringing up your fruits correctly or sacrificing what little control you have at the store. Don't believe their lies.

Also, my local Kroger just expanded the number of self-checkouts a couple months ago by adding in new ones that have a conveyor belt intended for larger grocery hauls. I have a hard time believing this story is even true when I've seen nothing but expansion to self-checkouts in recent months.

You literally just can't win. There's like a .25 second window where the machine will accept the item in the bag without complaining and if you miss it you just have to stand there waiting for it to calm down and stop acting like a hysterical woman.

This is all down to how the store sets the machines up. They have a lot of settings for how sensitive it is about weight or camera detection and all that kind of shit. I don't think they're going anywhere. The grocery chain where I live made a big show about how they weren't going to use self checkout five or so years ago because they cared about the customer and blah blah blah. in my country they tried self-checkout at some places but it didn't work. for example the first time I had a chance to use a self-checkout it was a weird experience because
A- it was 5 items or less
B- there was a girl sitting in a chair and she grabbed the items and checked them onto the machine thus killing the "self" part
C- the girl gave you a QR code paper that you had to take to the cashier near the entrance to pay.
