20190031 No.20190031 [Reply] [Original]

I started two months ago by put some hering, salt and water inside a 5 gallon mineral water plastic bottle, covered with some cardboard and left it to rot in the attic. The recipe I followed told me to wait two months, so today I opened and seems that little happened in these months. Doing more research I discovered that a) I should wait a minimum of 6 months and b) must let the whole thing open in the sun for 24h before sealing the bottle to kickstart the fermentation process. Also the odor was ok but I noticed a strong smell of plastic coming from the bottle. Should I change to a tin container? Also is the 24h thing really necessary to start the fermentation?

Do NOT fuck with fermenting fish if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Start with something easy like Kimchi first.

Too late, I'm eating now. It's actually delicious, very salty but on point.

I report back in a few hours, if not... welp.

plastic is generally fine for fermenting
the downside is it absorbs yeasts, flavors, etc so it's hard to fully clean for different kinds of batches
if you're doing different batches you want glass or metal
but for doing the same kind over and over again then plastic is cheap and werks

>>20190848
Thanks, I ate a few hours ago and it was fine. The smell is pretty weak, a mix of mineral water, fish and a little bit of plastic. I don't pretend to reuse the bottles if I make more, but I gonna try glass or metal next time.

I ate 4 random birds that flew into my window last year. One was a pigeon, but the other 3 were like cardinals or finches or something.
Anyways, they all smelled strongly of ammonia and I just skinned and gutted them then boiled them in (no joke) King Cobra malt liquor and hot sauce. I had bad green diarrhea afterwards each time except for one of them which made me shit my pants only an hour after eating it then I threw up.
Do I have intestinal parasites or something now? What would the symptoms be? How should I know if I need to see a doctor or something? I feel fine and I haven't had any serious health problems since some kidney stones in January last year.

They were all fresh, I cooked them within a half hour of catching them each time. It was over several months last autumn when I had no source of protein or meat other than what I could catch which also included a few neighborhood rabbits.

Jesus. There was this guy on /out/ or maybe /k/ that catches pidgeons with a very clever trap, I have a webm somewhere. He told us he waited 1 week to 2 weeks before eating them, he gave them some detox food and other shit before barbecuing them.

Still looking for the pidgeon trap webm.

Don't know, it's a mystery.

Here's the pigeon trap, anon didn't made that video but said that was his inspiration so he used the same contraption.

They don't know I eat the fish. They think I'm normal, they talk to me without realising I'm the rotten fish eater.

Also a couple of years ago my neighbor killed some animal and tried to cure the meat in the sun by simple laying on his roof. The smell was insane, I think it was rot already. It atracted all kind of shit, even vultures, I never saw vultures around here before or after.

You can have parasites without any symptoms. Or symptoms can even appear much later on. If you feel sick go to a doctor and they'll probably have you give a stool sample.

Welp, that's it, my last post. This began as a curiosity but in the end I really liked, don't know what went wrong with the fermentation proccess but I'm gonna try the 24hour open bottle next time, probably use a metal or glass container too.

Hope everyone is ok, specially pigeon bro. Also hope I don't die from botulism or some flesh eating bacteria in the next few days. Cheers.

Don't cook your fish beforehand, it's supposed to be raw and softened up by the fermentation.

The juices should largely come from the salting, 5% salt by fish weight, not 5% brine.
