i'm not really much of a cocktail fag either, just picked up a few extra things to cover the bare minimum of IBA cocktails (i'm an autist that likes standardization- if your favorite cocktail isn't on the list and i don't have the ingredients then i'm putting in a substitution NIGGER). there's a few things like kina lillet, syrups specific to tiki drinks, creme de xyz, italian cordials, etc. which are used in a very select few cocktails where you'll buy the bottle and it'll just sit there forever and/or you'll be obligated to get through it before it spoils in the case of vermouths. In these cases you don't have to go full autistic collectathon unless you have a lot of shelf space or actually have a vibrant social life. And don't forget this is /ck/- improvise. Make your own syrups, blend your own spirits (i.e. I don't have grand marinier because on the off chance someone requests a cocktail with it I could just combine triple sec and brandy as a substitute).
The main thing you'll get caught off guard with is not having citrus fruits on hand. Not having citrus locks you out of a shitload of cocktails. This is all coming from someone who's not very into cocktails so I'm sure a true pretentious sperg aficionado can come through talk some shit cause i've run out of effort on this post

That's the company's established date.

This is their first "single grain whisky" and the first ever "single grain whisky" released in the US, as legally in the US they're "light whiskey", but they managed to get the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade (TTB) to sign off on their using "Single grain" on the bottle despite them having rules that require this type of whisky to be called "Light whisky". In europe though it's called "Single grain whisky" and is used as a base in a lot of blended scotch and whisky. This is the first "single grain whisky" released from a US distiller.

They straight up say on their site that it's distilled by MGP. What Crowded Barrel did was to take old MGP light whiskey (not sure how much was aged in Indiana and how much was aged in Texas) and finish it in fun barrels: armagnac and chardonnay. Sounds like they're trying to get distillers to move from calling things "light whiskey" to "single grain", ergo the name "McGimmick".

Crowded Barrel is a pretty young distillery, so while they (and their buddies at Andalusia) do some distilling, they do a lot of blending and finishing right now. I've bought some of their stuff and I enjoy it, but a $150 price point is gonna be a no from me, dawg.

Another less common but still legitimate reason is that the fermentation and distillation processes create unique flavors in drinks that you can't get elsewhere, so alcoholic beverages can have some really unique and pleasant tastes. Red wines taste completely different from any juices, the closest thing to a beer is bread, and liquors are incredibly nuanced.

In that respect, alcohol is just the liquid version of leavened bread.

Is Hibiki Harmony worth it if I can get it for 69 euroshekels? I want to try a japanese whisky again after mostly having heavily peated scotches recently (Ardbeg 10, Caol Ila 12, Kilchoman Sanaig). They're a bit of an acquired taste, in that you have to learn to sift through the taste of alcohol. However, once you do that they can be great. I find that the trick is generally in smelling it; if you can pick up flavors in the smell, you'll start identifying them on the tongue.
If you try to get started, I'd recommend you try any spirit under 80 proof (so 40% ABV), whether a decent liqueur, a bourbon, or a sipping rum (preferably with lime).

Or don't. Spirits are the hardest beverage to drink responsibly,

Interesting how the smoke in the Ardbeg10 tastes so different than the smoke of the Laphroaig10. I just got into Scotch recently and after I finished my first bottle Laphroaig, I chose an Ardbeg next and I'm really impressed with that one. Laphroaigs smoke tastes like old hospital floor disinfect (which was gone the third day after opening) while Ardbegs is more like that of a campfire.

Haven't tried the 10, I like the 12 though, this is my first time trying it. Glenfiddich 12 in their Amontillado Sherry Cask is leagues above their regular 12, in my opionion. Bruichladdich Classic Laddie is a top tier for a non peated.

I can't stand Makers mark or knob creek and Woodford Reserve is the biggest meme bourbon there is. Knob creek has an awful peanut aftertaste, makers mark is way too sweet and syrupy and Woodford Reserve is very blah for how much bourbon nerds go on about it. Out of what you listed I'd take Wild Turkey 101 that is a good whiskey especially for the price.

Old Forester is pretty good. Finished a bottle of the 1920 and that was really good. So then I got a bottle of the 1910. Meh. I'm struggling to get thru it. Tastes like s'mores. Redbreast is great imo, and I DO like the fact they have unmalted barley in the mash, but I can only pick up that note in red breast. Was unimpressed with green spot, and I don’t think I’m willing to pay for yellow spot- maybe I’ll try a dram eventually at a whiskey bar. That's not really how it works, they're just not being judicisoius enough in their measuring to know if it's 80-81-82-83%.
