this 18 is a really nice balance of sweet and savory. nose is slightly sweeter, palate is more savory. peat is nicely rounded from its age so its definitely not as austere as the notable component in something like 6 Isles. Peppery-ness is on par with Talisker, but everything about it is a cut above anything bottled by Diageo for the last decade. after shipping Ledaig 18 cost me $115, good drop for the price and this is based on the neck pour.

Been on a bit of an old fashioned kick lately. I'm not a sophisticated man, so Buffalo Trace is my #1 go to. I have been messing with my simple syrup and have decided that my favorite one is:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
flesh of 4-5 oranges
2 cinnamon sticks (removed after reduction)
Strain or blend and keep in bar fridge.

reduce somewhere between maple syrup and molasses consistency. I used to overdo it on the bitters because I liked the orangey flavor, but now a splash of bitters works with a dash of that syrup.

My rye journey
Rittenhouse - Intrigued by the baking spices but too sweet/practically a bourbon
Bulleit Rye - Delicious with a spicy high rye mashbill
High West Double Rye - Bulleit but rougher, in a good way/also more herbaceous
>find out most ryes on the market are sourced from MGP
Dad's Hat - Authentic old timey monongahela recipe/unadulterated rye/would thin paints with
Knob Creek - Had in a cocktail/vanilla peanuts/needs further examination
Basil Hayden Dark Rye - Whiskey is completely overshadowed by port
High West Rendezvous Rye - Smoother than the double rye with holiday spices/good with pumpkin pie/not worth the extra money

Even if I were to go wait outside the door 2 hours before they open I probably wouldn't be able to buy one of those. Not to mention they're $200 and $330, so not at all affordable.

here are the other two bottles. nothing crazy, but really good value. The Glengarry tastes exactly like the standard Loch Lomond 12 and was only $29.99. I don't know why but Loch Lomond group left my market at the end of 2020, although the odd LL18 and Glen Scotia Victoriana will pop up once every 12-18 months. The Glen Elgin is nice, but very subtle with the peat which seems more like it was sloshed around in a Caol Ila barrel for a couple months.
>Armagnac
the price on the Tariquet 15 I bought spring '22 went from $64.99 to $97.99, same store and 47.2% bottling as well. Crazy when I can get a vintage Delord at twice the age for $109.99 at the same store.

because slamming someone with a stronger whisky right off the bat can be quite off-putting for many people.

Unless you know someone with a large selection you can try various types, distillers, price points, etc. It's gonna take awhile and a fair bit of money for someone new to whisky to really find what they like, so yes it GENERALLY is better to recommend something with less flavor so they can get their boots wet before diving into the wider world of whisky.

Flavor is good.
I can understand some flavors like peat being an acquired taste.

Midwinter Night's Dram was gone by the time I got into the store (~40 people waiting outside at opening time, I was around 30th, they only let 10 people in at a time) it was limited to 1 bottle of each highly allocated selection, and a max of 2 bottles total per person, so by the time the 3rd group of 10 got in the store, all 6 bottles of a Midwinter Night's Dram was already gone.

Laphroaig 10 was the first bottle of scotch I ever bought. I didn't think it was gross, but I didn't like it and it almost turned me off of scotch entirely. It was a little while before I felt like pulling the trigger again and dropping some more money on it, because it made me feel like there was a substantial chance that whatever I'd buy would turn me off just as much as that did and I'd end up wasting a lot of money trying to find something good. But really the problem was just the peat, or maybe just the Islay peat, as I've had peated highland scotches that were good. Really I've enjoyed every single malt I've bought since then, since I've never bought another Islay bottle. Green and gold are pretty damn good for their price and i'd pick them up over the Dalmore 12 or similar single malts in the price range.

Not everyone here is a whisky noob, believe it or not.

Red is trash.
Black / double black / sherry black are all decent but price matters. If they undercut single malts feel free, if they don't then they don't perform too favourably.
Green is well liked. I think it's too mild and it does costs more than most single malts. Great age for the price, but I'd stick to the ingredients within (Cragganmore, Linkwood, Caol Ila, Talisker).
Blue is great but price is blown the fuck out. The same blender made Spencer Collings Founders Reserve 10, and it's cask strength and cheaper and better. And it's not even that good value when compared to some indie CS bottlings.

Everything is a price to performance trade off. Johnny Walker fails in my market to deliver there. Try everything yourself and evaluate compared to local conditions as always. Even the dogmatic anti shills are often complaining because a specific bottle costs double in their area.

Just know that most American single malts aren't gonna be anything like Scotch, because Scotch uses old bourbon or sherry casks whereas most American single malts use new oak. Totally different thing - totally different flavors.
With most American single malts they'll be more flavorful than their same-aged Scotch counterparts because new oak has way more flavor to give. Of course, there's a drawback to this - it's very easy to overage something in new oak and end up with an astringent mess.

a lot of cocktails require vermouths. There are three categories : dry, sweet, and blanc. Also you have to put into consideration the shelf life of vermouths after opening (around 4 months in a fridge), so buy smaller bottles.
