American goulash is just a different definition, and it's typically an elbow macaroni and ground beef mixture. Comfy homemade version of Hamburger helper type of mixture.
Even Europe has its goulash vs goulashsuppe, two vastly different recipes that use the same damn word. Comfy meaty main vs paprika rich soup. All of it is good. I think American goulash is more the "beefaroni" people remember from school lunches.
