What are some dishes that look/sound high skill to normalfags but are dead easy in reality?

I don't know how to gauge this.
I thought toad in the hole,(yorkshire pudding), steamed Bao, and tempura were easy as fuck, I also thought crumpets would be hard until I made them myself.
It's hard to say because I've been cooking since I was 8, more than 30 years ago, and some of the stuff people find hard blows my mind.
Just because a thing has 14 ingredients and 20 steps doesn't make it hard, just time consuming. Does it seem like magic to normalfags because they saw some chef's challenge show where everyone is emotionally high pitched and stressed out?

To add onto this, sausage gravy. For years I never even thought to look up the ingredients and steps. Then one day I googled it and realized how few ingredients there are and how few and simple the steps are.

flatten the dough out into a circle the size of your palm, put in one tblsp. of the filling then pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, pinchy, together at the top in a circular motion until it's closed. that's it.
*(try to ignore the shitty fraction right at the beginning, the technique is solid)

People fuck up Yorkshire Puddings in 3 ways:

Not enough oil
Not a hot enough oven or oven opened part way through.
Didn't pre-heat the tray with oil

If it isn't cooked at a high temp the whole time, it'll turn into a sponge. Once keeping the heat up becomes second nature, they become easy to make.

any sauces that require butter, cream or stock, stock itself. cant tell you how many times fags on here act like you need a fucking license to simmer some fucking bones and scraps with some onions. irl, anything that requires cooking the water out of something (all cooking come to think of it). normies burn shit, being able to reduce a sauce or stew vegetables or whatever blows their fucking mind.

let the dough rise so its fluffy. then pinch it into small handfuls and spread it out. now symetically close it with a little twist. make sure your ingredients are fairly dry, or only use a small amount.

You should check to see if your yeast is still alive.
You should be able to fold it over after bulk ferment/portioning/proofing and have it be puffy still before steaming.

Risotto. Normal people think it's magic, when in reality risotto is just Italian for "stand and stir for 20 minutes". Women legitimately think you're fucking Bobby Flay if you make them risotto.

>cabbage and potatoes
That's the complete opposite of what OP's asking for.
>>19777002
>any puree
That's actually a good answer, especially if you call it a coulis. Most people simply don't use certain techniques at home so it seems really high end or professional. Nobody makes parsnip puree at home even though it's dirt flavored tubers blended up with some dairy and salt you almost only ever see at high end restaurants. i would also add hummus, which most people don't realize is absurdly overpriced if you buy it pre-made.
>>19777007
This is also wrong. Most people think cooking steak is easier than it is.
>>19777100
Same thing as the above.
>>19777104
I would also say biscuits are wrong. Most people don't realize what's involved in making biscuits, and for that matter they view whipped cream as something that comes from a can. They're both viewed as simple, cheap foods.
>>19777123
Correct. Anything stuffed is impressive, simply because you can visually see the steps involved (stuffed peppers are debatable).
>>19777172
Most Asian food is impressive to non-Asians when made by non-Asians.
>>19777345
Paella is about as difficult as it is impressive. It also depends on the presentation.
>>19777716
I don't think most people even realize making cinnamon rolls is any more involved than making cupcakes, and everyone can make cupcakes.
>>19778709
>soufflé
>it's just eggs
I think that's how most people view it, not realizing the dish can be a complete failure if not done right.
>>19778737
People who don't cook will smell garlic and olive oil in a hot pan and think you're a master chef. Throw in seafood and it can be mind-blowing...so yeah, I guess that's a good one.
>>19779974
Normies don't have any idea how stock is made or even used. They think of it as something you buy in a carton.

I'm not even that much of a baker and I can come up with half a dozen OBVIOUS differences between the two off the top of my head, all of which make cinnamon rolls more involved. I don't understand how you could even begin an argument to the contrary.

Even if she got jelly rolls confused for cinnamon rolls, those are still considerably more involved than making a fucking cupcake lmao
