settlers left their trash on the shore and saw lobsters eating the refuse, and they were disgusted.

prisoners didn't eat fresh lobster, they ate canned lobster. this sort of lobster was considered poor people food and the prisoners were ashamed to be eating it. some people today have similar hangups with staple foods like rice.

ask anyone who grew up in a fishing town, there was a time when lobster wasn't even fit to use as fertalizer, it was so stigmatized.
