As said twice (now three times), we break spaghetti, too. As for "long ziti," that's quite the shibboleth there. You've outed yourself as an American. Unlike you, we don't use a descriptor to refer to "long ziti" because that's the normal way they're available whereas cut ziti, as shown in >>19679271 is the derivative in need of one.

Broken spaghetti has a different texture that lends itself better to certain dishes than other, small shapes would, particularly dishes of southern Italy. It's not like we break it in half or anything (unless we specifically buy unbroken spaghetti; yes, the spaghetti sold in boxes in the US is already broken). We break it into pieces.
