If it can appear as a line item in a grocery run, it counts as an ingredient for the purposes of a home cook.

More to the point, refusing to count dr. pepper as an ingredient when you couldn't produce it if you wanted to is inane.

Even more to the point, you wouldn't refuse to count baking powder as an ingredient, so shut your whore mouth.

You cannot make bbq sauce out of three non-combination ingredients. It is made of a variety of ingredients when you get down to the nitty gritty of it. Most of the time it is made by combining already made sauces or condiments. If you can't even use ketchup as a base then you will not be making any bbq sauce.

A bit tricky with the ingredients list, but probably doable. Gonna go with...
>Chilaca peppers
You basically need a veg base. Tomato is a bit basic, so I wanted some sweet but not very spicy pepper. Since we're on a limited list of ingredients, we'll be roasting and/or smoking these for that extra flavour.
>Molasses
Same thing here, need a sweetening agent, but gotta pick one that has more nuance by itself than just sugar. Date syrup might work.
>Fresh Blackcurrants
And we need something for acidity. I first thought about just leaving this at apple cider vinegar, but I figured we can get a more interesting taste profile with some sour fruit. We can probably smoke these if we roasted the peppers, to get a decent amount of depth.
>Salt
It's free.
Overall, should be fruity, with some burnt and smoky flavours, sweet and tart. I figure it'll do the job, despite the restrictions. Definitely not traditional so some 'murican is going to seethe, but that's just a bonus.

Let me be incredibly reductive, based on the other posts ITT.
OP says single ingredients. Other anons add they should not be products. If I wanted to be technical, all ingredients available for purchase are products of some kind, senso lato. Senso stricto, he likely means commercial retail products ready for direct consumption. That would mean anything premade, such as sriracha sauce and mustard, would be banned from use. However, things like brown sugar - a blend of refined sugar and molasses - would still be allowed, as it is not intended for consumption directly out of the container. There is a middle ground which can be taken, too: that products sold in grocery stores are not allowed (as they are available products for consumption), but wholesale commodities are.
Barbecue sauce should have a balance of savory, sweet, and sour flavors, if defined loosely. More strictly, being a core element of barbecue (which itself is defined by cooking of meat with live fire or smoking techniques), barbecue sauce should incorporate smoky, meaty flavors. In particular, American barbecue sauce may be sugary and thick or vinegary and thin. There are too many styles to restrict the flavor profile too much in this regard.
I propose three recipes based on the restrictions:

>senso stricto:
A smoky, tangy, meaty, thick, and sweet sauce made specifically for meat-based barbecue dishes. Defined by vinegar, sugar, and smoke / char.
>liquid smoke
You can't drink this straight from the bottle. It meets the requirements for these conditions. It provides a smoky flavor to the sauce (duh).
>beef bullion
Tell me that you can eat these straight. I dare you. It provides a savory, meaty element while meeting the required conditions.
>balsamic glaze
Again, tell me how you can consume sugar + vinegar boiled down to a syrup, as a direct food product. It is an ingredient. It provides sweet, tangy flavors to the sauce.

>>19514749
>in between
A savory, sweet, vinegary sauce made for use in barbecue dishes. May be thick or thin, depending on the application. Can't use store-bought products.
>serrano pepper
When smoked / dried, it provides heat and fruity flavors to the barbecue sauce. It may be bought wholesale from farms. Alternatively, poblano peppers can be used for a milder sauce, and ancho chilies for a hotter one.
>grape must
Can be bought from producers directly. Sweet with some depth of flavor, works well to counter the other ingredients.
>salt
Given.
>white vinegar
Can be purchased wholesale as a commodity good for cleaning or cooking. Provides a tang, and meets the requirements for this dish.

>senso lato
A sweet, savory, sour sauce for meat. Can't use products. This one is very location dependent, as what ingredients you can find will naturally be limited to your environment.
>wood sorrel
Acidic, quite tasty. Provides necessary tang to sauce.
>black walnut syrup
I can make this from the trees directly, but it is seasonal. Sweet, nutty, complex. Excellent sugar base.
>salt
Given.
>mushrooms
Seasonal. Savory element when cooked down. Morels, chanterelles, old man of the woods, Caesar's amanita, hen of the woods, blood red milkcap, etc. Each is different, with different secondary flavors, but any could work.
Any questions?

In order by both mass and volume: corn syrup, salt, MSG. This is both the correct and most based answer.
*FAQ* (Fags Appearing Quizzical):
>Most correct?
Yes. It fulfills the parameters of a) being a sauce for grilled/broiled foods, and b) being truly three ingredients, each of which cannot be reduced to smaller components without being something else.
>Most based?
Yes. Simple. Versatile. It pokes guardians of sickly sacred cows in the eye. ("Muh corn syrup causes obesity"; "Muh iodine causes thyroid cancer"; "Muh glutamates are neurotoxins". Bollox.)
>Versatile
American (and thus the most famous) BBQ style has two main species of sauce: a sweet, smoky, tomato-based one; a zesty, seasoned, mustard-based one (with variations, of course). The corn syrup takes care of sweetness. The salt takes care of savory. The MSG takes care of umami. Thus the benefits of both styles of sauce can be distilled into these, with the rest of the flavor coming from the seasonings (dry rub and/or marinade)
>What about liquid smoke
If grilled to char, this flavor profile should come from the process itself.
>How do you prepare your sauce?
Ratio to taste. Gentle heat on the double boiler. Whisk like mad. Brush on when half done. Brush on when five minutes from done. Brush or spritz on when just off the heat.
