I just did the math and I'm confident that I'm not going to die. The cocklebur weighed 0.34 grams which is 0.0004% of my bodyweight and death occurs at 0.3% bodyweight consumption. Most of the toxin also would've been spread into the peanut brine which I dumped out, and the shells which I didn't eat. I'd say I probably consumed less than half of the toxin from one bur. Furthermore, I vomited as much as I could out, and I think thankfully most of it wasn't absorbed yet. I may still get sick but I won't die. Unfortunately it takes multiple days for the toxin to kick in and it causes multiple organ failure and a bunch of problems so I probably won't know for a while if I'm going to be in for it. Hopefully this doesn't cause permanent damage to my liver or any other organs.

Yeah, I don't remember if the shell was fully sealed or if it was open at one end. Not all of the peanuts were 100% enclosed, like you might find if a long shell was broken in half and then each half had an open end. But it was at least closed all the way around this bur, and there wasn't a peanut inside the shell, or an extra unshelled peanut inside the can.

At first when I opened it I was shocked at what the fuck I found. I was convinced that's what it looked like when peanuts first start sprouting or something. I really thought it was a peanut that got hard and started growing spines. If it wasn't an "out of place object" then a human must've put it inside a peanut shell on purpose

I do think it makes sense that one could easily get inside a can. I looked it up and they're a common pest weed that grows inside peanut patches, and those things stick to everything, so it's totally believable that burrs could end up in the water with the peanuts. Then it must've found a shell that was already cracked in half with the peanut removed and nestled its way inside. The orientation of it was correct so it would be able to slide backwards into the shell but not forwards. I think that's basically the only explanation
