In the aftermath of World Wars I and II, the Germans (and after II, Italians) living in America were forced to supply food (most famously, their ethnic sausages) at subsidized prices to Americans as a sort of civilian equivalent to war reparations, referred to as concessions. While the 1957 Frankfurt-Charles Act (commonly referred to as the "Hot Carl Act") repealed this requirement, by then their businesses were already entrenched, and they persisted in the stadium and entertainment environments they had originally set up shop in, though unfettered by government regulations, the prices of their food swiftly shot up far beyond normal market price.

Yeah but the Great Depression was a global depression, it hit Americans hard but the American and British economies were tied at the hip by the end of the Great War
Plus a huge number of returning vets were denied work, this was a problem for a lot of returning vets but particularly bad in England where the jobs that women and retireds took over were kept by them after the war
By 1918 everyone knew the era of the bolt-action rifle was done for, but look how many actually had self-loaders standard in 1940
Basically just the US, the entire Commonwealth had some 20K Brens all together
Even with war reparations they were broke as fuck, Lend-Lease started in 1941
