No more fast foods or chain restaurants. At the grocery store I only buy meat when it is on sale, and buy extra to freeze if it’s something I use a lot. I also have to make sure to get to the store early for sales because a lot of times they sell out. Some meats are so expensive I never buy anymore, even when “on sale,” like short ribs or oxtail. I’ve also stopped buying things like frozen entrees, canned soups, and no longer make impulse buys when there’s a new kind of cookie or snack food. I’ve noticed when shopping there is obvious growing food insecurity with seniors and younger working class just by looking at their carts. You can pretty easily tell who is on a full government ride because their carts are loaded up. EBT has received significant raises to compensate for inflation, whereas retirees and workers have not. A lot of those people also receive WIC benefits, which in addition to EBT gives them free milk, eggs, cheese, baby food, peanut butter, cereal, and a few other staples. It could be easily argued that the EBT/WIC shoppers have bigger food budgets now than many working people or retirees.

>> No.19234229

Don't really touch fast food outside of a dunkin coffee once in a while, but the price of fresh produce at the local mega stores has become equal or even more than the (superior) farmer's market produce that I can find around here from about May-September. Ditto that for meat and the local butcher. During the winter I'm kinda fucked, on produce but can fill a chest freezer with meat. inflation is a bullshit thing, but I'd call it a good side effect as my cooking has improved just from freshness and quality of ingredients alone.

I really believe that EBT shouldn't cover things like chips and soda and cakes. Junk food isn't cheap, it's fattening, and it's wasteful. If EBT only covered things like vegetables, meats, cheeses, etc. then you can bet that poor people wouldn't be as fat.

Also a reevaluation of who qualifies for EBT so you don't have people get on EBT and then spend their ex-food budget on fast food.

Yeah. I’ve been striking quite a few Amazon purchases from my list because of inflation. It’s always discouraging to see a treat I no longer indulge in pop up as a recommendation, with the text “SNAP/EBT eligible” underneath it. They cannot typically buy restaurant/fast food with EBT. I think maybe three states allow it. But they can buy as much “cold serve” as they want (frozen pizza) but what I find irritating is “cold serve” has been extended to cover cold deli items that require no additional preparation at home (cooking). I don’t know what your grocery stores are like now but once that became fashionable the $9 poorly assembled California rolls and other “sushi” drenched in sauce and fried crispies began to appear, as well as profoundly overpriced sandwiches. The way I figure it the grocery stores are trying to rip off the EBT shoppers who can’t spend their benefits in a restaurant. The entire system needs a major overhaul. As things stand the government just loads their cards up each month with imaginary money, quietly giving them raises to fight inflation, and with so few restrictions on what they can spend it on this does often mean grocery carts loaded with calories and little nutrition. The only real limitation on EBT at this time is hot foods. They can buy a bag of raw shrimp but they cannot pay for it if the grocery store cooks it for them. They cannot buy a slice of hot pizza at SAMs but they can take home a whole unbaked pizza from their deli. (Yes, SAMs accepts EBT.) It all needs revisiting. Beforehand it was an issue of it not feeling “fair” that some people received so much for free. But now with inflation coupled with increased free benefits to compensate while workers see no significant raises we’re approaching new territory where the EBT shoppers go home with a stack of frozen pizzas (shopping as though it were 2019) while the retires and working class are buying chicken thighs instead of breasts.

I think you're glossing over the fact that a large number (a much larger percentage than of the normal population to be sure) of the severely poor do not have a functional oven at home, or pots and pans, or maybe even a microwave. I dunno, man. You’d be surprised. There’s a whole ‘nother class of EBT shopper that make grocery store checkers want to cry when they see their balances. The rules vary by state and by situation. People down on their luck receive very little, presumably to encourage them to get back to work. And I’ve had friends be there and seen it. I’ve been lucky and never been there. It’s largely the generational welfare crowd that gets serious benefits rained down on them and they’re smart enough to not talk about it. There are a lot of people living with their parents struggling through low-paying office jobs or retail jobs who would absolutely fucking riot if they knew how much better fed high school drop outs who have litters of illigitters are. Lately it’s gotten much worse with inflation. Full-time workers getting priced out of apartments and moving back in with their parents while non-workers get free apartments. Full-time workers trying to figure out how to budget for basic groceries while WIC recipients get the basics for free, before they even touch their SNAP/EBT.

Now stop and think for a moment whether or not 40% of people will all just passively die if they can't get food and how many will murder you in your home.

>1/2lb classic roast beef
>large curly fries and drink
>4pc mozz sticks
It was a simple order but would really tickle my brain with how much fat was there. Used to be $12 and a couple weeks I went and it was $17. SEVENTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS. Before that I got a pizza from my favorite place (mom and pop place) and it had nearly doubled in price.

I simply don't get fast food anymore. Costco sells little personal frozen pizzas that come out to $1 each and taste better than a hot and ready. Almost anything I can order out I can make at home so I bulk buy shit and store it, like heavy cream frozen in ice cube trays and taken out as needed.

Other food is getting stupid too but I just keep an eye out for sales and budget more or buy it at Costco and find a way to preserve it

Dude holy shit finally, why are you like the only other person that seems to have the same thoughts as me. The current system is so completely fucked for anyone working a regular job. There is no incentive to work at all. If you can't make over $100k it doesn't make sense for you to have a real job that pays taxes, especially when you consider all the time and stress a real job comes with. Between SNAP, free health care, tax credits, and 0% effective tax rates, it's retarded.

What's even crazier is that it penalizes you for having money in the bank. And I'm not talking about $200k or $50k, many assistance programs start cutting people off at $5-10k in a checking or savings account. Further incentivizing people to live and conduct business outside the system.

A part time bar tender making $20k a year and not claiming cash tips will take home around the same as someone making $60k working full time after benefits and assistance. Shit is fucked.

Yeah this seems like solid logic. Also explains why so many people opt for your last option. There's not a lot of jobs out there that meet your upper requirements available. If you were smart and in a hopeless situation you just wouldn't work. That's what's maybe most depressing about this, is that the most capable and critical thinking people at the bottom rung have probably recused themselves to just doing the bare minimum since they don't have hope they could make the necessary jump where it's worth it.

Only idiots are left to fill in the gaps making $15k a year extra from working full time only to lose just as much or more in benefits.

Agreed. We’ve reached a critical tipping point in wages. All of these young workers who have to live with their parents aren’t dating, getting married, or having children. Currently 50% of adults age 28 or younger live with a parent. That is some pretty fucking bleak shit. Meanwhile, our media cries about our country’s “labor shortage” (it’s a WAGE shortage, you disingenuous pricks) and labels young people lazy. The ones who are working for peanuts get mocked for “living with mommy” (they can’t afford rent, you fuckheads). Oh, and they stay home and play video games “because they’re manchildren” (they CAN’T AFFORD TO GO OUT; just die in a fire already).

The only solution I see is if more continue to drop out of the official labor force, like >>19238998. This anon, like most people, has incredibly reasonable and even modest expectations for compensation. Nobody expects to drive a vette on their way to their job at McDonalds. What they would like is a working car, a place of their own, food, and a little extra for savings to build a future. Though, I suspect with our open border is an incoming mass legalization of either foreign labor or just outright blanket citizenship to glut the market with more workers if enough Americans drop out of the workforce.

the requirements vary state to state. most states have the requirement that you are actively seeking employment, or are currently employed and receive a salary below a predefined limit. work requirements were waived in my state during the pandemic but that's over now. basically, just submit an application and they'll do one of two things: let you know quite quickly if you're ineligible, or schedule an interview, probably by phone. if you get an interview, you do that and explain your circumstances and you get a letter a few weeks later that tells you if you got in or not.

mostly fast food, especially since I work from home now. I can order a to-go burger from any regular restaurant and it'll cost as much as fast food burger but will actually be tasty. I'll go out to restaurants and eat, but fast food just seems utterly pointless now. It used to be, you could go to a fast food restaurant and eat well for $5, and if you spent $10 you could gorge yourself. Now it's basically going to be close to $10 minimum just for a basic double cheeseburger, fries, and drink. If I go to Whataburger and get the patty melt or whataburger meal, it's like $13. It's insane. And on top of that, they often close the lobbies early so you have to sit in the drive thru for 15-30 minutes anyway. The food isn't fast anymore, and it's more expensive. Even then, if I buy the cheap stuff, I can get ground beef for like $3.50 a pound if I go to sam's club. Flank stanks have gone up but they're only $9 per pound. This is why I don't really care about work anymore. Why bother? I've been an IT corpo rat for the last eight years, and before that I was an insurance adjuster.

Basically, all those corpo gigs are rat races and the only way to stay on top is to make the job your hobby. So you spend time getting certified, polishing resumes, and negotiating and interviewing.

>>19239346
Again, why bother? We hit the Cyberpunk dystopia button in 2008, the pandemic just sort of accelerated it and we are on track to have an entire generation of young people who are not really building a future for anything but themselves, and that sort of degradation of family dynamics means the death of a society. You want healthy young people? Make sure they can get a job quickly, get a house with a backyard cheap, and get a woman/man to have kids with. I would literally sign a law mandating subdivisions be built with sub 250K starter homes for young people only, even if my taxes went up like mad. The externalities alone would skyrocket the economy back to the post-war era quickly. Then again, we are seeing Gen Z buying homes faster than millennials, but news articles are all over the place these days so who the fuck knows.

We mostly avoid premium shops now. Used to go to a nice grocer, but man oh man are they struggling. It's Kroger and a nearby Salvage grocer for us now, we buy the foods sthey have there, many of which are "expired".

Haven't yet bothered to go into a food bank, but we make enough not to. Might still though if it's no questions asked/no forms to fill out. Fuck them. I've paid into food banks for years when I was flush, now it's my turn and the whole food system is fucked.

Fast food has changed. I use coupons more and avoid certain places. I have no idea how McDonalds and Subway are still open; they both operate in a world where there are better options. And the options are not even far away. Every subway seems to be surrounded by four other sandwich chains that are better, and lunch being around 12-15 USD in my area goes much further at say, Del Taco or Chipotle or Carl's Jr than McDerps, where they want 3.50 for a double cheeseburger that is essentially unchanged from the shit I paid 1 USD for half a decade prior.

Sometimes I miss the before days, when I could eat junk that tasted decent and then full like shit an hour later. It was better times. KFC. I can't afford to spend $60 on 5 pieces of chicken.

Whole system is a fucking racket. I used to work 60-70 hours a week making 30 bucks an hour, being worked like a fucking slave but still making decent money. Covid hits, my industry gets hit hard and hours drop to a trickle but we're "essential workers" so we're still going in every day - meanwhile, the unemployed got more money per week than most working people (myself included with the reduced hours) and the government didn't do a fucking thing to help anyone employed. Are you unemployed? Here's a few million! Still working? Get fucked!

I gave up. Quit and went on unemployment, which I qualified for due to the reduced hours under the special covid provisions. I'm tired of getting fucked for doing the right thing, I'm doing the bare minimum from now on to get by and everyone else can fucking suck me. Nope. "Whaddu want?" Is my usual greeting I get.

Yes, and no. There’s a big difference between buying a home, and keeping a home. There are a lot of grants and government programs out there, with more bills waiting to be passed right now, that assist non-white first-time home buyers. The PROBLEM is they can BUY the homes (technically rendering the news coverage factual), but they omit the fact that they cannot afford to KEEP their homes. So they get handed money to buy a home, they can’t keep up on the payments, the bank forecloses, and sells the house again to another young non-white homeowner who was given a hunk of cash for a downpayment, they can’t afford to keep it either, the bank forecloses, sells the house again… banks are making more money selling the same homes over and over again to people they know can’t afford them then they make selling homes to people who can make the payments and keep their homes. So it is no surprise to me, at all, that there are two bills currently in the works that penalize people with good credit wanting to take out loans (they pay higher interest rates) while offering discounted interest rates to people with bad credit- the banks want to clear the way to selling even more houses to people they get to snatch that house back from to sell again. They call this “equity” (the new word for anti-racism) when they’re actively targeting black people to rip off.

Nice trips. The rice situation is hilarious. California grown rice is 10x the price of oatmeal at every grocery store in a 20 mile radius, but I can find it at Costco for the price you'd expect to pay for a locally produced grain. Cheap-ish.

More likely it's sheer volume/scale. Walmart, Target, and Costco are able to leverage more demand from their nation-wide market than the regional chains can, just like the regional chains like Meijer can leverage their markets better than the local grocery store can.
Incidentally, just noticed that the local small-town grocery store near me is closing up.
Coupled with their wider selection, higher throughput, and their corporate cash reserves, this means they can put a smaller markup on their products which they can get for slightly less cost in the first place without running in the red as a whole and weather what they might hope to be brief spikes in costs.

Food stamps became a thing because of.....Demoncrats. They wanted to give "dignity to the poor." So instead of going to a soup and bread line, they'd give out food coupons so a man could feel dignity going to the local grocer to pay in monopoly money. Eventually it became a plastic debit card.
Fuck all that. There need to be strategically located soup kitchen in city. Bean and vegetable soup and hardtack-like bread all day. Fridays and Sundays will be some kind of processed meat type special, like processed meat chili with cornbread. Breakfast is from 4am-6am. Lunch10:30am-12:30pm. Dinner 5pm-7pm. Doors open an shut on the clock. You must be in person to eat on hard plastic re-usable bowls, spoons, and cups. You are expected to dispose of trash and place used bowls in cleaning area. No talking above a whisper in chow hall. No food to-go. 2nds are permitted if all food consumed. Must be showered or neatly kept. Shoes must be worn with belt. Belt must be showing with shirt tucked into pants. Women may wear a dress past the knee only with shoes. Break any of the rules and there will be varying levels of punishment. 1st offense 1 week banishment, and so on until banned for life on 5th or something. Have a few managers that get paid well to run it like a hard plantation. Have the workers all be on probation with the threat of immediate re-incarceration if they move out of line even slightly or do shitty work. Also make it to where any citizen can eat at one of these so students, hard times people, and others that want to save on expenses can eat there and try to get by. Management can refuse to serve for any reason, like you stink bad or look suspicious. And of course, terminate all food welfare programs.

Oats, flour for bread, chicken stock, bananas, peanut butter, potatoes, and onions are my staple foods. Walmart also has some really cheap frozen chicken which I eat sparingly. For the most part everything I've eaten for the last few months has been these few things. I even skip lunch most days just to eat less.

As for drinks, I found dirt cheap matcha on Amazon which has lasted me months, and besides that I only drink tap water.

Water doesn't go anywhere. Its all here. None of this information matters at all. Water cost for food is basically fake information that doesnt change anything. You could probably make a graph like this for fertilizer etc. and it'd look similar. Honestly posting info like this is a sign that your IQ doesn't reach high 70s really.

Even with almonds, the shells are reused for things. Every part of a cow is used from the bones to the hooves. Beef also enrich the soil big time, so you could argue that they could use 3X that water and still be worth it without much difficulty.

Not only that, but the graph doesnt show anything related to climate or growing conditions/methods. It's basically like me posting

how my tummy feel when i see plants grow
appler - 45
pear - 98
poison ivy - 48327
rices - 99

so, as you can see we shouldn't grow poison ivy and i like apples more than pears too, so we should grow more apples.

>> No.19246504

you could extraopolate information from there and deduce that maybe its not a good idea to grow almonds in a fucking desert with a finite and dwindling underground water supply

I had some guy rant a me for an hour about almond recycling. he ran a buisness that recycled their almond shells. he says its very profitable at all but hes able to pull money out of it and stay afloat. this was about two years ago. he was also complaining he cant get anyone to process his almonds since all the plants are full from processing trees that the state of califnoria is culling to prevent more fires.

he ranted and ranted about how almonds dont need to be in every cheap cerial bar and ice crea (half of which gets thrown out by the grocery stores)

just cuase every part of the cow can be used/reused doesnt mean we should produce it in over abundance. i mean you could make 1000 cakes of the finest, most resource intensive ingrediants and then eat one cake and throw the rest into a compost pile. "well it didnt go to waste since i used the leftovers to grow more food"

how about americas over abundance of corn? well thats not a waste since we can put all the excess high fructocse corn syrup into all the goy's prepackaged food!

>Just do your own cooking like a third worlder
Realistically all of human advancement can be seen as a steady progression towards working less - from hand tools to beasts of burden to simple mechanical tools to the internal combustion engine. Our societies are formed the same way - with slaves, poors, or women pressed into service doing the cooking, cleaning and menial work.

What in the actual fuck makes anyone think they want to do more cooking or cleaning? Why would you aspire to living like a third worlder, whether it makes you more self-sufficient or not? People will literally buy robot cooks before the majority of civilized people (Read: Westerners) ever go back to a model that requires them to work more than they do today.

Convenience isn't a side-effect or a detriment, its the whole fucking point. Everything we have ever built or done has been in service of this. No exceptions.

Realistically, people are just going to start pressing hard for elimination of everyone in station beneath themselves so that they can have more for themselves, same as they always have in history, anon. First they'll start walking back special privileges for minority groups and fifth column interests, then they'll start deporting immigrant labor, then eventually press into law a means to deport naturalized citizens from other countries (E.G. Anchor Babies) and finally fall on each other arguing over who's American/European enough to deserve rights.

The gravy train is over and now people are going to start pushing each other off, starting with the Captial-O Other. This is human nature. It was not a matter of 'if' but a matter of 'when'. The answer, as always, is...
>They'll do it when they have to

Beef. Like a bad steak is $11/lb and a good one is $15+/lb, and meanwhile pork and chicken are at like $4/lb. Like even salmon is cheaper than this at around $9 or $10/lb. IDK, and another weird one that got me was the spike in ketchup prices and I'm tempted to just try making some on my own. Like it's not super expensive, but the price practically doubled. Decent cheese on my watchlist, b/c it's just right at the cusp of unaffordability for even the lowest-tier 'decent' brie or cheddar.

I could buy them more often if I stopped buying beer or something, but it also just pisses me off because I know that it's a bullshit markup. Lean hog prices have barely moved in 15 years.

But you are sort of right in that ppl with 4+ kids could get over $20k from just those two credits if their earned income and agi were just right (both had to be around $20k iirc.) But this year they mostly reversed the kung flu buffs on the credits but you can still get up to like 18k from them... first, currency deflation doesn't have a 1:1 linear relationship with money supply
second, price inflation is infinitely complex and currency value is only part of it (potentially a huge part but still only a part). rising oil costs definitely has the ability to cause systemic price inflation

that said, it is almost certainly largely from money supply in this case, since oil prices are still below late Bush/early Obama, yet everything is obviously several times as expensive now. there's also some price gouging because nearly every industry in the global economy is oligopolized by its cartel

>> No.19249756

Hardly ever get fast food anymore. When its not cheap its just not worth it for me anymore. You used to get an entire sack of tacos from Taco Bell for $5 and now it only gets you a soft taco and a bean burrito. Arbys doesn't have their 2 for $4 deals anymore. Little Caesars raised the price of the hot n ready plus made it smaller and the crust bigger so you get less toppings. If I'm going to spend $15-20 on what is basically luxury food, I'm going to go get something local or something like sushi that I can't make at home.

Energy drinks were a vice and I've scaled back on those a lot now. Walmart has energy powder that is $2 for like 12 packets and it works just as good and even tastes better than half of the energy drinks.

I hardly ever buy booze anymore.

Eggs are also a bullshit markup, you can't ever justify $6/dozen Saw some farmer's market asshole trying to sell duck eggs for $7/dozen, and don't get me started on the pork prices there, even offal was bad. I think the price spikes are to scam hipsters/folksy LARPers, which outnumber the sensible shoppers 10:1.

It’s interesting to see how drastically FOOD has gone up as opposed to most other things. I saw this shit coming back in 2020 and bought several pairs of shoes, duplicates of clothes I knew I would want to replace later, and many other items I use and replace on a fairly regular basis. The pais of pants I bought have only gone up a couple of dollars. The shoes cost the same. HOWEVER Suregel and Mason jars have more than doubled in price (glad I stocked up) and of course we see how eggs are double, milk double, etc. If this were truly an issue of currency inflation, EVERYTHING would be up 100%+. I thank God that it isn’t, but clearly something fucky is going on with food prices.

They're not going to let the manufactured crisis of Covid go to waste. They're using it to go after junk food the way they went after cigarettes only instead of using taxes they're letting the manufacturers inflate the price. All this because if your average nigger eat a cheeseburger he gets the sweet blood and strokes out at 50. This is why we all are fucked.
