Prepare rice properly, use cumin and black pepper, and lots of onion.

anon pls. a proper pilaf isn't chineeze fried rice. if you're going to toss bits of carrot but not sultanas you're definitely in the wrong thread and maybe even on the wrong board

Aw. Now I feel bad. I'm sorry, too.
Anyway, I never said to not use sultanas or other dried fruit, just that they shouldn't be/aren't the only sweet thing in a pilaf.
My favourite one (turnip or parsnip + carrot + onion + caraway + cumin + lamb fat + lamb or mutton or goat meat + lamb or mutton or goat stock + sweet parsley + dill; don't use goat or mutton fat for this as it is too strong-tasting) doesn't have any, actually, even though most do. The ones with fruit, especially non-sultana fruits, are meant for more celebratory meals or eaten out at restaurants. A regular, everyday pilaf cooked at home by your gran isn't guaranteed to have any.

Well for me, when I was little we had Moroccan neighbors move in and I distinctly remember the summer day they invited us kids over to play with their kids and they served us this (to me) very exotic rice dish and as I was spooning it down with all of its weird spiciness, I remember that first plump sultana I got and the whole dish came together. Been chasing that dragon ever since †bh

>moroccans
lol
Yeah, they're crazy about putting fruit everywhere but I wouldn't call their rice dishes 'pilaf,' necessarily, though I can see why others might.
There's something... different... to their food that's unlike stuff I grew up eating and I don't particularly enjoy. Also, they add sugar or honey to theirs, which is a little offputting to me. It's basically Algerian food, but much sweeter and, for some reason, better known.
I had a similar experience to yours with Ghanaians. My dad was a diplomat and made friends with a Ghanaian diplomat from their country's mission and we were invited to a cookout they hosted. They had a soup made of peanut butter, goat and spices which was very spicy but absolutely delicious, especially between rounds of football and video games my brother and I played with their kids.

Lolwut. Had you ever met Armenian or Georgian pretending plov is their national dish?

>> No.18999452

Armenians, yes. The only Georgian I know looks like a werewolf and smells bad so I don't ask him shit. I just jumped to the conclusion that, being surrounded by countries which make it, they do, too. Am I wrong?
