The last really good places I went were Ippudo (which is always full of tourists unfortunately), Masalawala (need a reservation a week or two in advance), and Le Bernardin (you probably can’t afford it).

As a neeeeww yorka the classic spots to hit up would be venieros for cookies, johns on bleeker street for pizza, veselkas for some good ass peirogies, kats deli for the reuben, and maybe so kong dong in west ny (nj technically but they're honorary) if you want a sleeper restaurant with some spicy ass tofu soup. that should be more than enough to cover every single palette of what you may want and keep in mind a lot of these places are open later in the night if you want to beat the rush hour.

I'm unironically V*GAN so I couldn't always hit the best of the best spots, but Katz Deli pastrami of course is a banger, Veselka in east village is really good for americanized vaguely eastern european food, and theres a basement of a hindu temple in flushing queens that has some fire in the cafeteria, you have to attend a mass though iirc

In any case, you're going to find some of the best shit on the lower east side. anything midtown is too ritzy, anything north of midtown is going to be too ghetto and not worth.

You can also find some absolutely amazing greek, italian and otherwise levantine food in Astoria queens, and the best chinese food in flushing chinatown.

also in jackson heights queens, the most racially diverse city in the entire world, there's a lot of spots with nepalese momos and that shit fucking slaps
