Pretty bad. Varies a lot, actually. Some prisons have farms, and they sometimes eat OK, if the food isn't intended for sale to the public. I've been in small county jails with no kitchen facilities that serve frozen tv dinners 3x per day. Varies wildly. From nutriloaf level forms of culinary punishment to decent cafeteria care, but generally it's pretty fucking bad. Expired ingredients, weevil infestations, poor sanitary conditionss and such are not uncommon.

That being said, I spent a month in juvenile as a kid, and I ate better than I ever did at home, though that's probably more a reflection on my mother than the quality of food served by the state.

I've went to jail a couple of times over a decade ago, never prison, and my longest "stint" was 4 days (former drug addict here, nothing crazy.) Also it was a comfy wipipo jail in the suburbs, not some inner city rape fest thank God. It all depends on your perspectives.

I'll put it like this. If you were given the choice between jail food and outside food, of course you'd choose outside food 8 days out of the week. Jail food sucked man, the portions are tiny, the food is underseasoned and all they give you are some tiny salt and pepper packets that are about the size of your thumb nail. Crispy things are soft, soft things are rock hard, hot things are cold and cold things are suspiciously warm. I mean what are you expecting, it's fucking jail, not a 5 star resort.

That being said, when you've been in jail for 16 hours and it's become abundantly clear that you're not getting out any time soon, a plate of lukewarm goyslop doesn't sound too bad. I got "lucky" during one of my trips to jail and I got to eat one of the bi-monthly hot breakfasts (normally it's cereal). Two tiny sausage patties, two tiny pancakes, a tiny syrup packet and no butter, one single limp dick slice of bacon and a fruit cup. Sounds like garbage to you. But for someone who hadn't eaten all day because I got arrested in the middle of the night, it was actually a pretty good meal. Oh yeah, and an acceptable side dish in jail is a half a slice of disgusting wheat bread. I got that shit during every single meal. It was gross.

Commissary isn't much better, but again it can be serviceable if you're really hungry/looking for taste of home. I only had a commissary card one time during my few visits, and one look at the menu told me it was a total rip off. Things that should be paltry like bags of chips, pickles, hot sauce, tuna, and ramen were like 5x their outside price. Headphones and calling cards were like 10x a reasonable outside price. Just another way to extract money from people in jail.

I did try jail cuisine one single time, but it was wasted on me. I was detoxing/withdrawing from drugs when one of the guys in my block who coincidentally went to the same college I did cooked up some kind of jail house burrito. I remember him breaking up some bags of ramen and cheetos into a powder and mixing it with nacho cheese and hot sauce and chopped up pepperoni sticks. Since I was dope sick at the time, all I needed as a wiff of that bullshit and it was enough to make me gag, and it wasn't much better going down either. I only ate a few bites of my burrito before throwing it out. Looking back, that was such a dick move. That guy didn't have to spend his hard earned jail money and waste his time crafting a jail burrito for me, but he did, and I didn't even have the curtosey to finish it. Kinda a weird thing to think about when it comes to jail but it's one of the more interesting things that happened to me in there. Otherwise we mostly watched TV and talked shit.

The first meal after you're released does empirically taste better than it would otherwise though. A fucking baconator and spicy nuggets from Wendy's never tasted so good brehs. It tasted like freedom.

Luckliy I haven't been back there in many years, but I can't assume it's gotten any better.

So I've never been to prison, but when I was a teenager my parents made me do one of those "scared straight" things where I had to go on a tour of the county jail, and eat the food.

It tastes... neutral. It's not disgusting inedible slop like you see on movies, it's just really bland. They gave us a ham and cheese sandwich, a carton of milk, and the smallest apple you've ever seen. Apparently this was what the inmates ate most days. It was edible but had very little flavor and neutral texture. Two words that popped into mind were "GMO" and "preservative".
But yeah, not very good. The other thing we tried was this literal goyslop called "Nutriloaf" (pic related) which I guess is what you are fed if you misbehave or throw your food tray. It's just ground up beans and shit all clumped together, really nasty shit. But being the autistic chad I was, I ate all of it and asked for more solely to spite the guards.

Here (Not murca) everyone male has to do mandatory military service, and on the barracks groudns theres always a sort of "shop"/Bar thing. Sells shoepolish, toothbrushes, 2 in 1 shampoo/bodywash, shit like that, but also like, Pizza or toast if one doesnt want to eat the mess hall food. Also Beer in the evening. And they made it so that they cant charge more then buying price, aka not make a profit off the recruits/soldiers. Because most of thema arent there by choiche but because they have to. Because selling people stuff at a higher price then outside in a place they cant leave is fucked up.

Prison should be work and reward based. They should have to do a job that benefits outside society in some way, but get a fair amount of currency to spend on nice stuff. The current form of prison being a bunch of adults milling around for thirty years straight is cruel and unusual punishment. It really shouldn't matter if a murderer has access to a nice bed, food and tv if he's locked away from society and still contributing to it in some way. People wouldn't be stabbing and raping each other if they had a realistic structure to their lives. This would never happen because it would actually rehabilitate people in to seeing the value of contributing to society, instead of just housing humans in pig pens for the cheapest way possible.

There's no physical money in jail. Every prisoner has a bank account, the most common way that prisoners get money in their account is that they work, from sweeping floors to working in the kitchen, all jails have internal jobs that employ prisoners helping with the day to day running of the facility. The pay is shit but it's better than nothing and it's usually used to buy some decent grub that you cook for yourself. Some jails have other employment opportunities where you can work outside jobs, usually minimum security offenders get this.
Secondly money can be deposited into a prisoners bank account from anyone on the outside just like any old bank account, usually by family members. Jailhouse drug dealers commonly exploit this by getting other inmates to wire money to them through family or friends on the outside for exchange for drugs that they have had smuggled in.

When I was an inmate I worked in the prison chapel keeping the place clean and helping out the prison chaplain and was payed around 60 bucks a week for about 2 hours work. Enough to supply me with three days worth of drugs

To actually answer OP’s question, this is what prison food is like here in Japan. It’s basically a cheap version of a teishoku set meal. Rice with barley mixed in to make it go further, grilled fish and various inexpensive side dishes.

the county jail stints usually for 1-3 months each were for a couple of DUI's and possession charges. possession was usually heroin, but has also been LSD, MDMA, and various PCP analogues.
i went to prison for also one of the possession charges, but i caught a DUI and possession while on probation for the original possession charge
i've been really lucky with employment even with my felony. all that and i only have 1 felony because some of it got wiped from my record because of my age (under 21 at the time), military record isn't accessible if you aren't a gov agency, and the rest was misdemeanors which aren't public record in my state.

Yes, "most" of them are. Doesn't mean that smartphones with data don't make it into inmates hands. There have been several cases where a rapper (lol) in prison made whole music videos and the administration didn't know the inmates had iPhones with internet until they saw the videos online.
Just google "rapper phone prison" and you'll see like 6 stories from the last few years from different western countries.
So in these cases, it took a viral music video for the inmate to get caught with a smartphone. Imagine the inmates that are being even a little smart about it.

Smaller models of smartphone are still small enough to shove up your ass if you're really set on it, so it's actually not that hard to sneak in.

Sex, race, and age, along with driving experience and type of vehicle, are stronger predictors of likelihood of being in a motor vehicle accident than being drunk. It also depends on your BAC, if you can barely walk then you're gonna get in an accident (1 vehicle accident by driving into a ditch or hitting a tree, most likely). Food in prison is not the same as jail due to state vs federal funding. Federal prison is always better for literally everything. However if you fuck up or get in trouble the punishments are a lot worse.
