How bad are these? I drink coffee for caffeine only and am too lazy and poor to go through an elaborate process to make coffee or get an expensive machine but even with my unrefined taste buds I can tell instant coffee is horrible and I got tired of drinking it.

I just want decent coffee, nothing amazing.

the main problem with cheap ones is they do not get hot enough to properly extract coffee and they do not sufficiently distribute water across the coffee bed, leading to uneven extraction.

if you spend more upfront, youll get much better results, consistently: https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer

People generally use "acidic" to convey a pleasant sourness, and "sour" to mean a harsher unpleasant sourness. Acidic coffee is valued quite highly by some people, but it's a preference thing.
Unpleasant sourness usually comes from underextracting coffee, whereas excessive bitterness comes from overextraction. You can have coffee that has neither of these really and is just sort of sweet.

>> No.18937310

>>18937179
There are different acids and quality of sourness. Acetic acid is generally garbage because it feels like drinking hot vinegar. Something like malic acid is nice and what I describe in making a “crisp” cup, that give it a light tang to it like a green apple and pair well with fruity notes, just feels tasty and light. I don’t remember all the shit, but probably learned about it in a hoffmeme video. Generally lighter roast can be more acidic. Does it kind of fuck your throat too with the after taste? Sourness/bitterness can also result from fucking up the brew. Then again, some folks I know just can’t tolerate any sourness period, it’s all preferences.

>>18937310

>> No.18937554

No, although ratio can effect it a bit.
Extraction depends primarily on these factors:
>temperature (higher temp = higher extraction)
>how darkly roasted the beans are (darker = higher extraction)
>time (longer = higher extraction)
>grind size (finer = higher extraction)
To a lesser extent it's also effected by the amount of water used, if you use little water it's not going to extract as much, but if you use enough water it extracts more. But that's probably not a factor in most cases unless you're brewing with like an aeropress using the original recipe for it (which has very little water)

I don't think it's anywhere as confusing as he's making it sound. You have major increments and then you can make small adjustments and if you're super-autistic you can exploit the fact that the offsets don't line up. It's really pretty simple.

It just sounds awful because the guy sits there like
>now it's plus 40 but backwards so minus two thirds which is plus six and minus eight but double five eights in reverse
making it as hard as it could possibly be. Guy just cannot communicate and expects us to blame the grinder.

Even so, you're offsetting the burr with the interior adjustment but then again still only have the coarse gaps on the outside wheel to try and fine tune a shot. Going in and out of the hopper to dial espresso every time you try a new bag would make me an hero

Opus has ~40 micron steps. Comandante has 30micron steps, 15 with redclix. Kinu has 10 micron ticks, but its stepless so you can go inbetween steps. JMax has 8.8 micron steps. This just isn't a good product comparatively. You're paying out the ass for that destatic ionizer and the fellow plastic housing. The ode was cool because it opened up 64mm flats in the home market and people didn't have to chase down used superjollys anymore.

New to coffee so bear with me. I see everyone talking about pourover and they only seem to talk about the V60. Why is that ? Hasn't the Melitta been a common sight for many people across generations ? So much so that the Melitta filter is basically the default drip machine filter in many parts of the world. Why do coffee enthusiasts just shun the of grandma pourover ?

Melittas have a way slower flow rate. Only lends itself well to low temp long drawdown dark roasts.

Decided to buy a bag of Starbucks Blonde Espresso with a gift card a friend gave me and was pleasantly surprised. Decent amount of crema and not harshly bitter like I was anticipating given Starbucks is notorious for bombing their roasts. Was sweet and slightly acidic. On par with some medium roasts I've gotten from local roasters.
