It's got brighter tones then most ripes, more woody, very little coca/chocolate. A bit of bitterness but not much. A bit of aged taste. It's pretty distinct from other ripes ive had but ive having trouble articulating it other then saying it's brighter, woody-nutty. Some viscosity, flavor lingers on the tongue. Definitely interesting

I'd say reusable steel mesh. you want a mesh, not the ones that just have holes. it should also be as big as possible, the more space you have, the better cause some teas need a lot of space to expand

Why are redditors so god damn cringe when it comes to yerba mate. They literally can't answer how much caffeine is in it yet shill people on how much better it is than coffee. I know I got a shit American brand but it's palatable at the very least. It's like they are free labor amazon reviewers that fucking extend to other websites. Jesus christ these people are just making me mad reading their stupid shit. How true is

dont brew in an insulated tumbler, it'll mess up the taste. if you want a lot of tea brewed in one go buy an english teapot and then transfer into an insulated tumbler, you can easily get ones as large as 32 ounce/~900ml

>> No.18926099

it really depends how strongly you brew it though, not to mention the level of caffeine varies quite a bit
but subjectively I would say 1 cup of coffee = 2 or 3 cups of average medium strength yerba mate brewed the way most people do it. but because it's so easy to just keep hot water in a thermal flask and you can brew it up to like 10 times, by the end of a yerba mate sesh you will be very stimulated

jingmai miyun 2022 sorry i meant to post this yesterday for that anon but i forgot.. 9.1g in 120ml gaiwan. also slrry im phonetyping this and i dont know how to pace my phoneposting so if its really long sorry
this tea took some time to pick up, 2 infusions after rinse and it was tastable, i brewed it really strong tge whole time becauae it wasnt that enjoyable when weak maybe. its a very returning sweetness/huigan focused tea rather than upfront flavour, but it had a nice short lasting bitterness and the returning sweetness which took some time to come was super strong, cant say if it was more floral or fruity though. there was some astringency but it was barely noticable.
it was nice but ive tasted better, im a bit biased because i prefer upront flavour puers but the farmerleaf guy prefers these types of teas which are more green

trying some raw and ripe puehr brewed together. 2020 prosblossom and some 2022 snoozefest, both from w2t.
So far they seem to work pretty well together, the shu seems to add a little creamyness which balances out the astringency of the young sheng a little even when brewing it decently strong. It almost tastes a bit like cocao nibs. The cha qi is kicking my ass, but I am brewing pretty strong

sipping on some of "That Camphor Cake" from LP
https://www.liquidproust.com/listing/1188363800/that-camphor-cake-400g
It is a aged white label production sheng cake made sometime in the late 1990's to very early 2000's. Very gnarly looking, lots of stems and large misshapen leaves but the tea is undoubtedly well aged. The cake is aptly titled, camphor is its dominant flavor. Reminds me of moth balls and aromatic cedar with earthy and medicinal undertones. Gives me nostalgic vibes of playing in my grandparents wardrobe as a kid. I was not so sure about this tea the first time I had it, but it seems to have grown on me. Definitely, not an everyday drinker or a tea for everyone but I appreciate having it in my stash.

I am not sure it is literally camphor but it is what is typically referred to as "camphor" in tea tasting. I have had other teas with the same "camphor" note, typically well aged puer made out of coarser material. I should get some pure camphor sometime to compare Even if the "camphor" in the tea is actually camphor, camphor is not toxic at low doses and does not appear to be carcinogenic.

it's one of those "small, curated selection" sites. the idea is that you trade a wide selection of teas and price points for a more selective approach where the guy running the site chooses everything according to his taste
the guy who runs it is a bit of a weirdo, but he does seem to have a lot of rare stuff that would be hard to get in the west otherwise. I've never bought from him though cause the shipping costs to Europe are atrocious

He does get interesting teas sometimes and some decent prices of factory hk storage daily drinker stuff if you happen to check his site in the few days before he sells the case he ordered. But he also is all about fostering a community of customers who buy most things he gets in so they can talk about it together online.

Thinking of stacking up on my favorite loose tea, some nepalese second flush Kanchanjangha. It somehow struck me. I can only imagine with the quality of the zip-lock the tea can still be considered good decades to come.
Question: Any diehards have a strong opinion against any 30sec->1min soaking? I use a metal strainer and rarely let it pass the two minute mark. I can enjoy a trifle strong assam as well, but rarely divert from this incredibly light, floral and mild nepalese variant I never have fund myself infusing more than once and never diverted from using water still boiling in the kettle. Do you think I'm missing out on something? I have incredibly hard, unfluorinated, tap water.

>> No.18931080

>>18931036
More than anything you should try and soften your tap water somehow, hard water really mutes the flavor of tea.
Short infusions like that are okay but you might as well brew the same leaves twice or even 3 times if you want to do that.
First brew 1 minute or so, second two minutes, third four minutes (if it's worth doing)
The later brews won't taste the same but you are missing out by brewing the leaves for a short amout of time.
If you want to decide if you think its worth getting some kind of water filter to deal with the hard water buy a gallon of cheap spring water (poland springs is good for this) and try brewing your tea with it to see what the difference in taste is.
I also have really hard water and i got a filter pitcher from pur and that helps a lot, britta ones also work fine.

1. You are getting tricked into paying ridiculous amounts of money for small quantities of tea by online vendors such as Yunnan Sourcing that were deliberately set up to con clueless Westerners.

2. Most Americans who are "into tea" don't even like tea, they just like the aesthetic of being a tea drinker. This is why they are more concerned with collecting fancy teapots than they are with actually drinking it, and they can't go 5 minutes without referencing Uncle Iroh.

First off, those sha qing videos are very relaxing to watch. Second, although I think I disagree with William's definition of "snob" and "snobbery," the class of hobbyist he's describing definitely exists. He cleanly defines a line between the two. An elite may have difficulty identifying he is in the elite when the snob acts like an elite better than he can. He draws some understandable parallels to other fields, military and science that I also found enlightening.
However my favorite part of the video is how bloody well he articulates the necessity of a an objective hierarchy existing in the gamut of a product-based hobby. To not be elitist, as defined at the start of the video, is to not show passion and you might as well be drinking grocery store bags. Or worse yet, one might not have that passion and still have the desire to belong to this community of hobbyists, also known the arrogant snob.
There was also some great little snippets of hierarchy of understanding of tea and thinking about sha qing or tea in general as having layers of abstraction to understand. Darn insightful.

Puer teabags can be surprisingly decent in my experience.
Use boiling water, put the teabag in the mug and put an inch or two of water in and dunk the teabag and swirl the water around for like 15 seconds. Then dump out that water and fill the mug normally with the teabag in it. Brew 5 minutes at least or just leave the teabag in and drink when it's cooled off enough. It's definitely a different flavor then any tea you might be used to. Exect chocolate, woody mellow flavors. It usually tastes better then it smells

>> No.18935881

www.chinaheritagequarterly.org/features.php?searchterm=029_life.inc&issue=029

I pretty much agree, the general vibe in a lot of hobbies is a sort of intellectual nihilism, centered around the trend of anti-gatekeeping. The central desire is to go to the metaphorical buddhist monastery, and to be told that you are already enlightened, that you were always enlightened and that you just need to realize it. Not the reality, that you will be told that you will be spending the next twenty years of your life at least meditating and studying scripture, and maybe then you will become enlightened along the way some time later. 4chan does well both in killing snobbery, there's no face I have to present to this thread, I have no status or persona here so fighting over it or trying to build my status is pointless; and in promoting the necessarily somewhat violent discussion. No one's posts are put above another, there is no system of upvotes or likes to support a rebellion of the underclass, or the anti-enthusiasts. If you have a strong opinion about tea, you have to lay out your argument and be judged on its merits. Almost especially for tea, I think that this format emphasizes the "jianghu" of tea. There really are not clear lines, everyone has their own extremely strong opinion of what tea is, and you can make very compelling arguments for pretty much any of them. Part of tea culture, at least enthusiast culture, is almost as much arguing about tea as it is drinking tea. Forming an opinion, developing it, and then presenting it passionately is part of the fun. I think it's especially enjoyable without the sort of nonsense that comes with forums, and communities that promote snobbery.

Most sources say 5-10mg caffeine per g yerba or around 400mg caffeine per 50g gourd.
I'm not too concerned with exact numbers cuz 100mg after a week break != 100mg for the 4th time that day.

But you generally put a liter of water through 50g of yerba cuz that's how long the flavor lasts.
1 cup of coffee requires around 14g coffee and a liter is around 4.25 cups so coffee and yerba are pretty evenly matched.

Tea has around twice as much caffeine per g but it makes around 4x more liquid in terms of flavor. (pulled the 4x number from ass)

Okay, this review may dissapoint some, but it has been a while since I have had puerh. I'm going to have another session with a different ripe puerh to get a little perspective.

Aroma of the tea lid was quite strong. Third and fourth brewings the typical forest floor aroma came out more, but it was subdued. Exotic wood, old books, incense. I liken it to stumbling across a temple in the rainforest made of exotic woods that had old scrolls and incense within.

Taste: nicely sweet and creamy mouthfeel, the typical puerh taste was subdued somewhat and that incense and woodsy flavor is present with maybe some dried fruit along with it. Had about 6 or 7 brewings.

I really enjoyed it.

I had to stop at 3 brewings of this one. I'm getting woozy.

I have to say that after trying a younger puerh the difference is quite noticeable. This one was noticeably less nuanced, and did not have that exotic sort of taste to it that made the old one so nice.

This one had that forest floor and a dried fruit flavor at the forefront woth a nice sweetness, but fairly simple compared to the older. Still quite nice tho.

Yea, I only had the Dahongpao dark roast so far. Will try another tonight.

interesting, I'm sipping on a different GABA oolong (unroasted) and it doesn't really taste like a TGY to me
it's got more of a "cinnamon, vanilla and pears" kind of profile, with maybe a slight "autumn leaves on the ground" thing going on as stupid as that sounds. I agree with no bitterness though, perfect tea to brew grandpa style for this reason
I've had one other unroasted GABA before and it was fairly similar, but more creamy, a bit more sour and with apple instead of pear. I actually think they were pretty unique from all the other oolongs I've tried

Am I retarded for being lazy and paying extra to get my tea in tea bags instead of loose?

Probably
You can get big open teabags you can just dump a spoonful of tea in and stick in your mug

I guess if I settle on buying a particular tea I might do that, I feel like if I'm changing teas regularly though a reusable tea-bag thing would eventually get flavored by the team I'm making in it.

Finishing off an old sample of a 2013 puwen cake from tea-expert.
I never expect much from puwen since their tea is usually super cheap but this is a really tippy blend and just tastes like a nice super sweet factory puer. Easy buy if you want a nice sweet daily drinker and its reasonably cheap still.

You can buy boxes of disposable single use teabags, they are long so the open part sits over the edge of the mug, box of 100 should be a couple bucks

Depends, naturally, but in general I like my daily drinkers well under 10 cents per gram. If I'm buying nice cakes, I've gone as high as 20, maybe 25 cents per gram.

>> No.18942539

>>18942497
Oh yeah sevencups offers some really high end teas. They have some stuff that's like $1200 per lb.
Generally the teas they are selling are priced at the higher end of market rates for those specific teas but they are reasonably representative of the market prices of higher end offerings. I don't think anyone on /tea/ is ordering large quantities of tea from them. In fact im not sure if anyone here is ordering from them at all.
Anyways i typically spend 10-20¢ per gram on teas, maybe up to 40¢ per gram but i typically drink several kilos a year of 10¢ per gram stuff and maybe a couple hundred grams a year of 40¢ per gram stuff
