Reminder that 95% of scotch distilleries are owned by multi-national corporations, import barley from countries overseas such as Turkey and Egypt, do the malting offsite, buy peat from other regions of Britain, use lab-created yeast for their mash, use barrels made from American or Spanish wood, and add caramel coloring to the final product.

The only thing authentic about any particular region or scotch distillery is the water or copper stills, both of which could hardly be said to contribute any unique flavor profile to the scotch over any other distillery.

The only thing that gives a scotch an authentically unique flavor profile that is not imported from elsewhere is the process by which the components are put together, i.e. smoked peat, grain ratios, etc. This is a process, which has nothing to do with utilizing the resources of the terroir.

All of this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the over-insistence that each distillery possesses a unique terroir. French wine for example has much stricter requirements for the definition of something like Champagne. If the grapes don't come from Champagne, it is not Champagne.

You are buying a good that is being sold to you as a goodgoy lifestyle product, like a bottle of Armani cologne. There is nothing uniquely Scottish to a bottle of scotch whisky in 2023. It is a globohomo product that is purposefully aimed toward the same soijaks who buy Bespoke Post and Beard Oil and wax philosophic dilletantism about the "delicious" and "complex" smokey peat flavor of Islay malts while looking down their noses at Speyside drinkers, pretending that Don Draper is "literally me" not knowing they're all part of the same retarded, consoomerist goycattle, drinking the epitome of a fake product.

Scotch drinkers are the worst.

I would absolutely love for you to try to disprove anything I said. Let's take a look at 95% of the scotches reposted in /wsg/ and see who their owners are, shall we?

LVMH (French):
Ardbeg, Glenmorangie

Diageo (English):
Johnnier Walker, Talisker, Lagavulin, Caol Ila

Beam Suntory (Japan):
Laphroaig, Ardmore, Auchentoshan, Bowmore

Pernod Ricard (France):
Aberlour, Strathclyde, Glenlivet, Scapa, Lomond, Chivas

Remy Cointreau (France):
Bruichladdich, Octomore, Port Charlotte

Distell (Africa):
Bunnahabhain
Glenblair

Emperador (Phillipines [lol]):
Dalmore, Jura

That enough for you, faggot? Wow, sure are a lot of authentically, wholly-owned Scottish companies in that list, huh? And you really believe international mega-corporations aren't going to cut corners to fulfill the obligation to their shareholders?

The majority of barley is imported through Port Ellen (owned by Diageo), 80-90% of which is foreign import. It is germinated and malted onsite at Port Ellen. As for the barrels, check the websites of any scotch brands and find me a single one not made with American, Spanish or French oak, I dare you. Caramel coloring is not only a reality of scotch production but actually *sanctioned* by the British government - check the regulations yourself. That authentic peat flavor you bloviate about endlessly can comes from Aberdeenshire - the literal other side of the country from Islay. Considering the distribution of peat worldwide, it would be of no surprise to me if this was imported from Eastern Europe as well.

So that whittles down the contribution of individual distilleries to their copper stills, their water and their process.

Please, enlighten me, what have I said that is *blatantly wrong*? That Champagne is not made in Champagne? Or that multi-billion dollar corporations aren't going to dump a fortune into marketing to losers like you?

95% of scotch bloviation typically revolves around Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin and a few others. Talk about a strawman - I was replying to that other faggot who claimed everything I said was false (it wasn't), and his implication that these are micro-brands exempt from globalized, multi-national corpo fuckery that has corrupted everything else (they aren't). I can't see how that's anything but the opposite of a strawman.

You wanna drink it because you enjoy it? Obviously, I don't give a fuck what you spend your money on, but no other gastronomic product attracts more misplaced snobbery, elitism and big brain bloviation than scotch. Certainly not in the liquor space. The crowd it attracts is fucking garbage. It's one step above comparing American macro-brew lite beer to each other, only worse because of its air of pseudo-masculinity and sophistication.

As far as unhealthy, you chose to waste your Saturday arguing about a superfluous luxury product on the asshole of the internet, so please, continue.

Oh and by the way, just to show how retarded you really are, add up the named or pictured references to scotch brands in this thread not counting this discussion and see what you get.

Ardbeg - 5x
Laphroaig - 3x
Lagavulin - 1x
Other - 4x

So that means those three brands account for 50% of the scotch mentioned here. All other /wsg/ threads follow the same trend, so when you say tHeY'Re oNlY mEnTiOnEd RaReLy, you either know you're lying or you have no idea what you're talking about.

The ironic thing is that he seems to be absolutely fuming about scotch and islay whisky drinkers in particular(???) for being snobby and elitist but then raves about when he found out that not every single ingredient comes from a specific "terroir" (imported barrels LOL) or how "single malt" or somehow a new "marketing" trick while literally everyone slightly into whisky has always known single = single distillery, malt = barley whisky.
The guy is severely deranged battling his own mind ghosts completely misreading what people say and building impressive strawmans just to rant and argue about nothing. The guy he originially responded literally just said:
>half of this is blatantly wrong and the other half only applies to mass produced scotch
Which still holds true, imo.
95% of scotch distilleries are NOT owned by multi-nationals, it's about 75%. There are a lot of distilleries that produce whisky without caramel coloring or chill filtration. There are lot of distilleries that use local barley, a few even malt their own barley on-site. Scotch whisky IS unique because of climate, water, stills, process (tradition and expertise).

Benromach is real nice. never had Sassicaia wine before, but this is quite a subtle flavor for a 12 month finish in red wine. the toasted, meaty/peaty malt and cereal notes are much more forward in the delivery. not particularly tannic or winey. kinda like a cross between a pear brandy and quince fried in brown sugar as far as the sweetness goes.

Global ownership isn't relevant.
The corners aren't particularly cut because there are non foreign owned distilleries to compete against (if anything the big multi nationals are competing more heavily on price and value which is good for the consumer).
There is a distinct taste to the peat sourced through Port Ellen, we don't really care about it's origin.
Used American Oak is the hallmark of scotch whisky. Everyone is expecting this and it's basically required.
Caramel colouring is overrated as a flaw. It doesn't really effect flavour.
Stills are hugely relevant.
Marketing isn't. We're all whisky nerd here, so cut the bullshit and taste some whisky. Scotch isn't bad because you're angry about politics or terroir.

He doesn't even like whisky anymore and drinks vodka.
It's all just a projection of the reasons HE told himself when he pretended to like whisky. So understandably rather than objectively target the taste of it, he attacks everything around it that doesn't necessarily have to do with it and doesn't explain how it does either.

I started hearing about the difference just about a decade ago. I dont drink so I cant say, but that seems to be the ongoing M.O.

I'd say if you have the ability to buy it at Costco, its usually well under $80 before tax. Otherwise, I would suggest against the purchase.

reasonable compared to other parts of the world that pay 2-3x that sure, but there are absolutely better Scotches with the same profile for the same money or less.

>Nose: Burned chicken in gravy, wood smoke, overheating electronics, marmite and malt out of the bottle, upon first uncorking. Hints of anise and candy-apple subsequently appear. In the glass, the apple and burning electrical equipment dominate, with new notes of hospital disinfectant and wood glue.
>Taste: Wood smoke, creamy caramel, oak, burned chicken without gravy, a hint of peach, citrus, malt and apple. Almost no burn going down at all.
>Finish: More smoke, tobacco, and wood glue.
>Verdict: My favorite scotch and favorite alcoholic drink of any kind. I was expecting Laphroaig 10 to be a peat-dominant, savory, malty scotch before trying it, but in fact it is a whole trifecta, straddling all of the three major flavor profile categories of scotch - it manages to have wonderful rich confectionery and fruit notes, better than those found in most other whiskies I've had, in addition to all the peated flavors. My dream scotch would be a dry, earthy dram like Dewar's White Label but with much more complexity, strength and smoke in it, and whilst this did not end up fitting that bill, it is an absolutely excellent whisky.

>Nose: Alcohol, and not the good kind. Primarily some kind of paint stripper, maybe with a dead rat left in it for good measure. On the second pass, after the tears had cleared from my eyes, I get desinfectant, weed killer and a hint of mustard gas. Amazing, how can something be this much of a punch to the nose with only 40% abv?
>Palate: What the....? As a lifelong atheist, Im not one to resort to religious ejaculations, but I'll make an exception in this case: Jesus F'ing Chirst what is this? My tongue is trying to flee down the back of my throat, the roof of my mouth is on fire, and my lips are considering a change in career. This tastes like somehting the kids came up with while playing with their chemistry kits. Words escape me, and after a while, the first to come back are "cadaverous", "vile", "rotting", "toxic".
>Finish: Oh, if only it were finished, but of course, it's long, monumentally long, just to drag out the torture. I remember getting a nasty sunburn as a kid, and if that had been on the inside of my mouth, I'm sure that's how it would taste and feel. That'll teach you to not use sunscreen - I'd honestly prefer a mouth full of sunscreen right now. Gasoline fumes rising from my esophagus, with a sidenote of that brown juice that drips out of the bottom of a compost heap. Please stop.
>Overall: Do people actually drink and enjoy this stuff? Or is it just some elaborate joke to take the piss out of newbs like me? I'll be heading back to the Highlands as far as whisky is concerned, and I'll think long and hard before considering another trip to Islay.
