Same here. I hadn't eaten at Subway for years, but then I remembered all of the product placement in Happy Gilmore and I decided to give it another shot. Wow. Nah, I have a deli slicer, at best you'd be removing a layer/chunk of skin with one if you deliberately stuck your finger in one. And that is only with the cheap ones you need to push yourself. As long as you are using the tools provided, shit is safe as fuck. They'd be more likely to remove a finger with that little knife they use when making the sandwiches.

The more expensive varieties slice the meat themselves, no worker fingers required.

I'll never understand all the hate subway gets. Yeah it's a low-quality-low-price chain restaurant, but you get what you pay for there like you do everywhere. Subway isn't fashionable so there's no hipster tax which actually gets you better value than average for your dollar. And frankly the food is just fine. It's not as good as Jersey Mike's obviously but it's literally half the price for the same amount of food. And you get more of a sugar/MSG hit in the cheaper ingredients which is sometimes exactly what you need. Saying subway is "bad" compared to upscale or mom&pop sandwich restaurants is like saying porn is "bad" compared to fine arts. Like they're just incomparable products that satisfy different needs.

Well I gave Subway a chance and the staff was extremely rude. They gave me the middle finger as soon as I came into their (frankly dilapidated) restaurant. And when I came up to order, the sandwich artist began to pound his chest and bark "what now bitch?" over and over again.
I tried to tell him that I need a couple of minutes to review their menu before ordering, but he began to jump up and down and hooting. This prompted the other 4 staff to emerge from the back and join him in pounding their chests, hooting and jumping in a threatening manner.
I attempted to calm the situation by saying "one six inch meatball sub, please". All this did was enrage the feral Subway staff. They began to holler "meatball please" in a cruel and mocking tone, over and over again, relentlessly jumping and menacing.
I began to fear for my safety and said "I'm sorry for offending you, have a nice day". When I attempted to leave, the pack of feral Subway employees escalated their intimidating display. It was fortunate that I was the only customer there, because they leapt over the counter and began to jump onto the tables, tipping chairs, hanging off the lighting fixtures, and generally acting in an unprofessional manner. Their chaotic animalistic hollering beset me from all sides.
I attempted to sprint for the door when I felt a warm mass hit me on the temple. I looked down and saw that the projectile was an a six inch meatball sub. I picked it up and took a bite. I was not pleased with this product.
At once, the Subway employees began to pelt me with six inch meat ball subs. I made a dash for the door and escaped only mildly scathed.

It was at that point that I went to my local, tried-and-true, reliable, and ALWAYS satisfactory Arby's restaurant. I was treated to a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which helped me forget about my Subway "experience". Not to mention, I was served food worth enjoying.

Similar experience here. I tried the much-touted Subway roast beef sub. Supposedly, according to social media posts that were "totally genuine and not paid-for marketing", it was a good fast food item enjoyed by many.
I ordered the sandwich and received what appeared to be a disheveled wad of paper, perhaps something to toss in the refuse bin. However, I was assured that my supposedly tasty treat was inside.
I followed the instructions and, upon removing the many layers of questionable wrapping material, was met with what appeared to be a "food-related item" that suffered a tumble down a set of stairs before being stomped under a steel toe boot.
Now, I'm not one to decry fast food presentation differing from advertisements, they all do it. But this seemed to be crossing the line. Nevertheless, I knew that presentation wasn't everything, so I carried on. I picked up the scrambled mass and, upon bringing it to my mouth, was hit with a pungent aroma that seemed to seat itself in the back of my sinus. Tears welled in my eyes as I opened my mouth and took my first (and only) bite. I tasted nothing upon entry. I tasted nothing upon the first bite of the chew. I chewed thrice more before "flavor" made itself known. It was not a welcome one. I have never had the displeasure of chewing on an old dishrag that had been dropped and forgotten behind a restaurant dishwasher, but this must have been its closest "edible" imitation.
I let the chewed mass fall from my mouth, back into the so-called "wrapper", letting it dribble upon the supposed "sandwich". I went to the nearest drug store and bought mouth wash - it took 5 cycles to rinse out the taste. Unfortunately, the pungent aroma that had seated itself in my sinus would persist for hours.

It was not until I stopped at my local Arby's restaurant and ordered a Roast Beef Sandwich that I had would have a sandwich worthy of the day. And a much-enjoyed one, at that. I highly recommend everyone try Arby's Roast Beef.

does anyone else's subway use those stupid rectangle scoops that don't even come close to the ends of the sandwich? Like obviously the idea is that the scoop is the shape of the sub so they can dish out the meat faster without spreading it, but I get a chicken teriyaki sub and they slop it all in a blob in the middle of the fucking sub, there's like a solid 2 inches at least with no meat on at either end of the sub, it pisses me off. The way to make a deli slicer make sense is to also get a vacuum sealer. We either make our own deli meat, or buy on sale from a restaurant supply place. We slice it and seal it in half pound increments. If you have a good sealer, you can freeze it, and it'll thaw just fine. We do the same with the giant logs of cheese from the restaurant place.

The factory has an auto-slicer for slicing tons of meat fast. Whereas the restaurant has to pay a wagie $15/h to slice every single piece individually. The shipping of the meat doesn't change, whether sliced or unsliced, it still needs to get shipped from the factory.
So where is the cost savings? It seems that slicing at the store just requires more man-hours from wagies, costing more.

Yes, it seems Subway might be cutting costs on meat slicing on their end and going for cheaper supplier contracts. The cost of processing the meat gets passed down to AND increased at the restaurant, which the franchise owner has to pay, not Subway. Seems like this is one of the last killing blows to the company as the current heads try a last ditch measure to stay afloat. It won't work if suddenly franchisees start closing down due to unreasonable expenses.

very minimal overhead costs result in very low break even sales. Think about what a subway store was in the 90s vs what it was in the 00-10s vs now and then add on the current trajectory
they keep increasing franchisee costs and oversaturating the market to where subways are competing with each other

Thing is it doesn't matter how nice you want to be, you HAVE to treat your employees as badly as possible and pay them as low as you can get away with because your competition sure will, and competition is at its absolute max in the independent restaurant business. That's the actual problem with capitalism, classic Moloch. I guess it at least works out alright for the consumer though.
