Similar but not similar enough to be confused. Both are acidic and sweet, similar color (talking about the processed product, not the berries themselves).

The proper way to eat them is to, instead of making jam, stir the fresh berries with a boatload of sugar until it sort of congeals. The direct translation of this would be "raw-stirred lingon" (Rårörda lingon).

The jam is fine and also traditional, but the fresh stirred ones are nicer for sure.
