How did it turn out? Was it as disgusting as most people would assume it was or was it unexpectedly good?

I haven't tried this but I might consider it but I don't want to ruin a perfectly good ham just to see how terrible it is.

All of these soft-drink ham recipes are memes from the 1950's when clueless housewives knew nothing about how to make a glaze.
They taste like shit compared to a simple glaze made with honey, brown sugar, and clove.

But why would soft drink companies intentionally mislead 1950s housewives?

>> No.18821467

I mean, it'd probably taste just fine. It's just a sweet glaze essentially when it's cooked off I imagine for the ham. Like a worse honey. Or maybe better. Who knows.

If you aren't retarded, there's nothing wrong with using soda for cooking. I keep a few cans of coca-cola in the fridge for simple sauces and stuff because the sweet/sasparilla flavor works pretty well with some stuff.

It would be waaay to fucking sweet.

It's good, I have tried it before. I prefer coca cola as a glaze for my hams.

very good. not a meme.

Cola and Dr. Pepper are surprisingly good flavor complements to ham.

I have done a Coke and Glenlivet glaze in the pan a couple of times. If you're going to do it on a whole ham I think you would have to reduce it first. Just pouring it on and leaving it on the oven for an hour and a half would be dumb.

Never tried it but you'd be surprised how good lemon lime soda goes with pork, a lot of Filipino pork barbecue has sprite in its marinade.

My grandmother uses some 7-Up for creating a ham sauce. It's delicious.

that's what that word means

Didn't click the pic, but I've had a ham glazed in reduced ginger ale syrup rather than 7-Up. My ex is an Amerinigress and that family find ways to put fizzy sugar water in things, from 7-Up cake (think like tres leches, but all the leches are 7-Up) to Dr. Pepper ribs to fucking ORANGE GODDAMN FANTA VINAIGRETTE, they will put that shit in anything. No wonder "diabetes runs in the family."

What are the advantages of soda as opposed to just a more conventional glaze?
To me, as someone who doesn't drink soda, it doesn't seem worth buying soda just for this, but I would try it if it really is that good.

My grandma always cooked hams this way growing up, except she would use a can of Sprite instead. Always tasted good to me. If she didn't have Sprite, she'd use a can of beer instead.

it's just putting dissolved sugar on meat, it's not something new
salty/savoury/sweet can be a good combo

it should be noted that you should be using a drink with cane sugar rather than corn syrup to match the original

As >>18826782 says it’s just sugar with some favouring. Cherry coke works well too. Just make sure you don’t use a sugar free version.
I am aware that someone has done this with Monster and it’s been quite good too (allegedly)

Oh, I'm aware. Those ribs were quite nice, despite being oven cooked rather than cooked outdoors/smoked. The vinaigrette was an absolute travesty but as I despise sweet dressings on salads, others might like orange Fanta vinaigrette.
I've made watermelon chicken wings once using watermelon soda and a packet of watermelon Kool-Aid but was told by the ex that while they were good af, I could never bring them to a cook out because racism.
