I thought there was some kind of wide scale fuel shortage thousands of years ago–wood for chacoal, I suppose–that facilitated the adoption of chopsticks as the dominant eating utensil. Something about raw food being cut into bite-sized pieces to make cooking times shorter to conserve fuel.
