Who was behind the big avocado push?
No-one ate it two decades ago, now it's everywhere, it's in all food advertising, it's considered a staple for millennials, it's a super food, it's a health food, it goes on everything.
Though I'm still not sure if anyone eats them. I've never seen anyone pick one up off the shelf.

Protip: plain avocado does not work on Ethiopian injera bread. I thought I could do something with the sourness, or maybe sweet-and-sour, or tried a few other basic spice/flavor additions to try to make it work, but it was just all wrong.

I love avocado otherwise. It's not that versatile in general however, compared to some other fruits, I'd say. Bananas and plantains, tomatoes, apples, and any citrus are probably the kings of the fruits.

it's one of the healthiest sources of dietary saturated fat there is--a lot of folks get too much in their diet from refined high-lipid cooking oils but it really does go a long way in the context of a balanced diet. nutritionally well-rounded & promotes LDL uptake, which plays a critical role re. one's cardiovascular health. its also vitamin & mineral-rich to boot.

if you can't buy them fresh then its probably a better idea to buy frozen tho, and ofc going overboard with dietary-saturated fat has health risks

No it's not. Stop worrying about what could have been and make the best of your situation. I know a former NEET around your age who got a 2 year coding diploma and now has a solid job and friends. You could also learn a trade, become an electrician or something like that. It's pretty interesting and not that hard to get into. Work (usually) isn't as fun as playing vidya or eating pizza, but it gives you a sense of meaning. Which will make you happier in life.

Buy discounted soft avocado packs at a store that sells them. A bit of brown coloration is fine for guac you make for yourself, as long as the texture hasn't gone bad. The off flavor of the brown can be covered up easily with a bit more acid (inc tomato) and roasted chiles, and it has notes that somewhat more closely resemble the avocado varieties normally used for guac anyway.

>Avocado toast
People were spending like USD12 for something like that, up to $25 or more in some places, but I never saw any recipe for it that was anything particularly fancy. One could cook eggs in a very slow, attentive manner and get excellent results to justify a markup on labor costs, but it's not like the avocados had anything going for them other than being not rotten. The artisanal bread was never made in-house by the shop that sells the toast.

I thought people getting daily Starbucks was pushing it a bit in terms of useless expenses, but hearing real-live people actually talk about buying this shit every day was a little much.

I live literally 10 minutes away from an Intel, which means I have a few dozen amazing Indian restaurants and grocery stores nearby, and I've never seen a single avocado at any of those places. I don't really understand how a culture on the opposite side of the planet with a very particular taste for foods grown in their homeland for centuries not liking avocados means anything. Fortunately I can go across the street from the Indian place to the Vietnamese place and get an avocado shake to go with my aloo gobi, palak paneer, baingan bharta, biryani, naan, raita, and chutney. I fucking love being born in America.
