18603138 No.18603138 [Reply] [Original]

Why was everyone so obsessed with making sourdough bread when pandemic started?

>> No.18603168

People were home more, started taking up hobbies.

>> No.18603183

easiest bread to make. make dough with sugar leave out until sour. 2~3 day mic again and ferment 2~3 day.

>> No.18603186

They were afraid of the supply chain completely collapsing, which is why they hoarded flour, oil and toilet paper, the cornerstones of society. Bread is easy to make and calms their monkey brains (big result from few ingredients), of course if the supply chain collapsed there would be no energy to cook it in their ovens

This is why you hoard alcohol and cigarettes
The government will distribute flour, beans, sugar, oil and other essentials during a time of crysis and they will probably arrest you for hoarding it

People who don't understand yeast always seem to think we'll run out of it when there's a "crisis".
I remember all the truckers in Denmark striking like 20 years ago and people started hoarding yeast of all things.
You know, that thing you can grow endless amounts of from one packet?
Kinda makes me wonder if maybe some folks are stupid.

Being able to spend time at home awakened an old part of the brain where we would take care of our homes more, making all our food, protecting our families and making sure we have enough to survive winter.

Thanks to modern society the family home is little more than a bus stop, just a place to wait until you have to commute back to work.

I’ve been baking bread for years. Fucking months went by before I could restock on bread flour back then. And right when I could get that, I realized I was running low on mason jars (they’re the ideal food storage vessel and I also use them for drinking glasses and for giving away food gifts). Fucking normies decided they were into canning now and for months a case of jars was like $150 instead of the usual $15-20.

Yikes
(for those wondering, this was in 2016, when tara was 40 years old)

For OP. I dunno... focaccia is the easiest 'premium' bread to bake. I guess sour dough does have a return on investment since you keep using the starter, which i guess makes sense if you're going to constantly be making the bread for the next 2 years of lockdown....
