Mr. George stole the name from a northern theater chain and then used it for his food palaces.

Good site if you're interested in the history of this most pleasurable company. Also, a lot of cool info on Florida retail chain history.

>How are the Public brand pop-tarts.
Most of that stuff is just general private label discount stuff. Some of it is worth it and just as good as national brands, some isn't. Then there is the Publix brand items that Publix actually makes. This includes most of the deli and bakery items you hear people raving about and nearly all the Publix-brand dairy items.

This is why Publix Premium ice cream is fucking glorious (try Moose Tracks), their chocy milky is fantastic (whole milk, like TruMoo), and their yogurt is surprisingly good. There are things that they really need to bring in-house under the Premium label, like the sodas, but there are still a lot of exclusive products you can only get at Publix beyond the subs that are very good.

Like anon mentioned, the bakery key lime pie is fantastic as well as the bakery English Muffin bread (or any of the fresh bakery bread baked on-site)

>> No.18555122

>>18543901
It should be a crime what they charge for their subs. They have crap bread, mediocre toppings, think its all justified because they have Boars Head, and charge as much as a real deli. They're barely better than subway and way worse than all the other national chains including Wawa's.

But all the food in Florida sucks except for Cuban food so of course they exported a crap sandwich.

>How did it go for you?
I started as a cashier for Winn-Dixie in high school then got a job at Publix in produce, then became a stock clerk, then Scan/Price. Hanging tags was (and probably still is) the best job in the store along with Store Trainer. In most stores you get your own desk and the job itself is about 1/4 a desk job. The hours mostly suck (4am 3-days, 7am 2 days) but could be worse and you can get used to it.

The beauty of it is you are the only person who knows how to do your entire job. If you call in sick (which you should never do in that role) or go on vacation people can do the individual tasks but rarely does another associate know entirely what you're supposed to be doing. So if you're caught-up you can just walk around with a clipboard or your sign cart and sip drinks and eat snacks and nobody will know any better.

It's generally a job for older women but if you're a dude and you did your time on the stock crew you will be an asset and management will like the fact that you're generally around when the stock crew isn't for several hours every day. If I were you I'd go for it with 1 caveat: change stores and don't tell anyone you know how to cashier because they will constantly call you up to run a register otherwise. Never let them crosstrain you as cashier.

I left the job in college but I often painfully regret it. The pay was not great but the stock and benefits were excellent and I often wonder how I could have supplemented my income with side-gigs or online fuckery while keeping my cushy Publix desk job, non-management with little responsibility.

I worked as a stocker at Winn-Dixie for a time as well. On one hand I was physically active and never had to take work home with me. On the other I was the only person on the team that showed any desire to move up in life. Everyone else seemed content hotboxing in the parking lot on their lunch break, then had the audacity to complain that we were leaving late each night.

I also discovered that there is a disgusting subpopulation that discards things behind cereal boxes. Food including, but not limited to, chicken wings (whole, partially eaten, and just bones), sushi, entire flank steaks, insulin needles, and the occasional dirty diaper. I also learned that fat people in motorized scooters are the most entitled people in the world and deserve every bit of scorn that comes their way. From time to time I look back fondly at the job but quickly snap back to reality when I remember long nights of doing inventory and dealing with shitty managers.

Just say you don't like chewy bread or giant subs or whatever. It's ok. You don't have to do this larp where you act like Publix Subs are disgusting or inferior because they are objectively not. They are among the best of any chain anywhere and the absolute best of them all is relative and a matter of preference.

Also, even with the price increases I'd say they are some of the best value in terms of take-out or fast food. You get two meals out a whole sub.

Yes, numbnuts. Nearly everything is from the bakery/deli/produce department at Publix. You can just go grab it and make your own. And the things that aren't, like the veggies, are better if you just get them whole and slice them on your own.

That's a feature, not a bug.
