Jack in the Box is terrible, Sonic is okay for like the slushes and shakes but the food is mediocre, and In-N-Out is the best fast food burger imo but the fries suck. Never had Whataburger.

Good and fresh burgers, I get them without their spread cause it’s kind of weird and they saturate into the bun unlike thicker condiments. Fries are fresh but extremely plain tasting, some say reminiscent of cardboard. Very small menu with just fries burgers and shakes, excellent customer service, you really won’t be disappointed if you go but they do get busy.

Probably the worst of the four. Mediocre burgers and a lot of items that are supposed to fill a niche, it’s regarded as good food if you’re stoned or drunk, very greasy.

Down home burgers with a lot of good toppings, large portions. Cheesy, not too greasy, if you go when they’re making it fresh it’s top tier. Again, very meh fries but they do offer in house ketchup that is quite bussin, get the reg and spicy. Lastly they have a famous breakfast item, the honey butter chicken biscuit. Ask for extra sauce. All their breakfast items are actually very good. Lunch and dinner hit or miss depending on location and time of day.

The two best things In-N-Out has going for it are prices and freshness. Pretty sure a Double-Double combo is less than $8. And yeah the fries aren't good but you can see them cutting them fresh right in front of you, which is better than you can say for most places.

They also treat and pay their employees very well, which results in the amazing customer service.

In n out gets overrated by tourists and flyovers, but the burgers are fresh and cheap. Fries are just ok. Jack in the box is overall pretty average but theyre open 24 hours and have a variety of sloppy greasy junk when you feel like eating that. They got rid of their best (and one of the best overall) burgers years ago, the ciabatta burger

I have all of those in my area being in a Texas city with California immigrants. I'm obviously biased, but here's my thoughts:

Sonic used to be great, worked at one for a little while in 2002. The burgers were made fresh to order, the onion rings were insane. Took hours and hours to prep them but I've never had a better onion ring outside of a sit down restaurant.
Don't know if they got bought out or just stopped caring. Something changed in the last 5-10 years. Their burgers are terrible now, I would have rated them as number one or two back then and now I would put them below even mcdonalds. They use the same meat as dairy queen now it tastes just like prefrozen great value walmart patties, almost fake. Tiny burgers now probably half the size of what they used to be. Their hotdogs and sides are still alight but I only ever really go there anymore to get an ocean water.

Sonic: who goes here for a burger? Foot long chili cheese coney plus tots and a ridiculously good drink and ice cream menu is why you go. No other fast food restaurant comes close in the drink and dessert category.

Jack: trash low quality food.

In n out: super overrated but Californians swear by it. Animal style is literally fries with thousand island dressing on it. Fucking disgusting. Burgers are cheap and good, but they’re more cheap than they are good.

Whataburger: extremely based. High quality burgers, stacked high. Pretty based shakes and floats. Open 24 hours which is a huge plus. Breakfast is really good. Possibly the best regional chain.

Something about cheese, grilled onions, and the not-quite 1000 Island dressing makes the fries work, and you're missing out if you haven't tried them that way. I generally want my fries to look as little like a potato as possible, with a crispy outside and an inner consistency of mashed potatoes, so for me it's crinkle cut or nothing. But animal style is a whole different beast.

Whataburger is always made-to-order. Once they see your order in the back, they put the patty on the grill and dip the buns in butter drop them into the toaster.

The veggies are cut by slicing machines in the back to fill up a few pans, which either sit in the cooler or, if they're being used to prepare food, sit on ice. The veggies are always used within a day of being sliced.

In and out is worth trying but it’s overrated and fries are only edible animal style. Sonic is only good for dumping vodka into cherry limeade or ocean water drinks. Whataburger is pretty alright for fast food burgers. Jack in the box drunk and/or high is an experience though. Sourdough jack is good on its own merit, their tacos are trashy but good with buttermilk ranch, spicy chicken sandwich is surprisingly good, and some of the random shit on the menu really hits the spot sometimes. Got a breakfast burrito and an egg roll at 3am the other night.
