Post how you shop for food.

How you people shop food?
Do you make your own weekly/biweekly budget?
Also you make a menu beforehand? How you prepare it? You rationalize it by protein/carbs/f & v/ shit fast or frozen food?
Are your menus solely based on whats on sale beforehand?

Also, what type of food you usually splurge on/avoid at any cost?

Basically tell the anons how you have mastered your own system of keep yourself alive with food lol

I live at home but if I am shopping my list is this

Pasta
Potatoes
Chicken breast
Salmon
Olive oil
Parsley
Salt, pepper
Assorted fresh veg - cabbage/brussels/broccoli
Onions
Eggs

THis covers all my bases and costs less than 100$ usually. There is some variance and some sales, like if clams are a 1$~ a can Ill get them for pasta. I grow my own tomatoes, garlic, kale, basil, peppers and cucumbers in the summer (Garlic is year round, havent bought it in over four years).

If Im shopping for my parents, I get stuff like cheese and coffee.

I do eat garbage food. I gave you the cheapest most idealized list I could and lately I've actually been eating mostly just what I posted. I make hash (2-3 eggs, garlic, pepper, fried potatoes in olive oil, pepper, Tabasco) for my first meal around 1pm, then I drink a big ass soda from the gas station making my daily calorie intake somewhere around 1300-1600 calories.

I dunno what your area is like, but I mentioned Tobasco, there is an Amish store near me that gets random shit in bulk for some reason. Currently they have a whole shopping cart filled with Tobasco for 0.75$ a bottle, so I bought like ten. They do that with a LOT of goods, I got those good Cento tomatoes that Chef John talks about from Italy or whatever, the ones that are imported and cost like $5 a can for $0.75 each too, the catch was that almost all the cans were pretty dented.

>>18356247
I never, ever buy any fruits besides lemons and limes, which are very cheap. Like I said I shop for my parents too, sometimes they will want fruit so I'll get them stuff when it's on mega sale, like in season blueberries for $1 a pint. Never, ever buy that shit out of season/sale.

Honestly as far as shit food goes, lately no, besides the soda I mentioned, I don't eat it but very rarely. It just costs too much now. I can't validate a $4 bag of cheetos. Rarely doritos will be 3 for $6 and I'll get that, but that's all, and even that is stupid.

>How you people shop food?
On weekends i go buy stuff i need, i only buy stuff i can't buy near at mom & pops stores, like vegetables, fruits, meats, cereals, etc. I know how much i'm likely to eat so i shop accordingly. I know how much i'm going to need so i shop accordingly:
7X small fruits or enough portions of a big one
7X same but another fruit
One quarter cabbage
1 Vegetable, enough for 7 days (14 portions)
1 Vegetable, same
7 protein sources, i usually go for chicken, because i buy in bulk, so i usually eat the same thing the whole weekend, it's the healthiest, so around 7 chicken steaks.

In the mornings i eat eggs, i buy these daily from a local mom and pop's, they sell them by piece so it's fine. If i get tired of chicken i just swap it for chorizo or cutlets, perhaps beef, for a day or two. (Can also buy near).

>Do you make your own weekly/biweekly budget?
No, i actually spend very little in food. Just what i need, literally, i don't even check how much i spend on it. I try to buy local produce, only buy from big chain stores shit like cereal, so that saves a lot of money.

>Also you make a menu beforehand? How you prepare it? You rationalize it by protein/carbs/f & v/ shit fast or frozen food?
In the mornings i eat bread and coffee, plus two fruits, usually an apple and a guayaba. At some point during the day i cook for myself, a 2X sized portion. Either 2 chicken steaks, 2 small cutlets, 6 eggs, or halfs of two of these. I try to avoid beef but it's fine sometimes. As carbs i either buy bread or tortillas, sometimes i cook pasta or rice, but not very often since i'm lazy.

>Are your menus solely based on whats on sale beforehand?
The core of my diet is simple, if i don't find something i can easily swap it for something else. So no, i can improvise i'd say.

I, every now and then, get some fast food, be it pizza, burgers, or whatever, usually on fridays, just to cool off. I try to avoid cooking legumes since they take more time

>> No.18356290

I make a menu/plan for the week. Sometimes I have my heart set on certain dishes, and will just go out and buy the ingredients. Most weeks though, I'll check what meats are on sale, then base my meal plan around that.

>How you people shop food?
I usually walk to the nearby grocery store that's literally 5 minutes away. I bring 2 reusable bags and generally dill them up pretty accurately.
Sometime I'll drive to the bulk store, not because it's far but because I'll buy bulky stuff.

>Do you make your own weekly/biweekly budget?
No, I make enough money to not care about my food spending and food aside I generally spend very little so it's never an issue.

>Also you make a menu beforehand? How you prepare it? You rationalize it by protein/carbs/f & v/ shit fast or frozen food?
I think about what I wanna eat and make a list of ingredients I know I'll need, then I top it off with basic shit and whatever I'm out of. I'll often decide on the actual recipe while browsing available cuts or looking at spices, sauces and seasonings.
I don't buy premade or frozen meal, but I'll buy frozen vegetable mixes if appropriate.

>Are your menus solely based on whats on sale beforehand?
No, I don't care about sales, special offers, coupons, etc.

>Also, what type of food you usually splurge on/avoid at any cost?
I'll splurge on any nice cut of meat or fresh/interesting bread & pastries. For example they were selling croissant loaves the other day, it was pretty cool.
I also keep an eye out for interesting beers from the local microbrew (though most of the time they taste terrible, I just enjoy trying new drinks).

So unless you dont care about taste or repetitive foods,(I wouldnt eat sonething more than twice/thrice a week (without being sick enough to not have it in a long time after that, because of the repetitive "trauma"),
What you can do, is to find an intermediate way to make that shit work, maybe like:
>do that crap for side dishes or quick lunch
>force the fuck yourself to eat the same thing, you can make it last longer by playing with diff. dressings/spices
>meal prep for 3 days
(Or similar for starters, who knows, maybe it turn to be your kink and you may want to keep adding days, and who knows, perhaps you will get bored the fuck out of it and stop all this faggotry Im writing a whole essay about while fucking shitting garlic sented shit in middle of the night)

I hate restaurant food and I want my kids to eat home cooked food every day. That's hard because of work and lack of time. So once a week I prepare a menu, then make a list of all of the ingredients plus breakfasts plus dinners for whole week. I then predict which days of the week I won't have time to cook and make extra. I freeze the extra portions and thaw when I need them. Over some time, I now have an inventory of ~50 home cooked ready to thaw various lunches which complement the days I can't cook. This way we eat home cooked food every day and I only go to the store once a week.
Starting this system was hard (I track the inventory digitally so it doesn't get old), but after two years now it works flawlessly and takes minimum effort honestly. I also have a very good grasp of how much food we need for the whole week.

Well I have 50 lunches frozen in freezer and I need to know which was prepared when, so I have a digital list with dates when that food was prepared. You put something in, you add it to the list with date. When you take something out, you remove it from the inventory. It's easier than writing on the glass box containing the meal, because then I don't have to go through the freezer to see which one is how old. My general rule of thumb is I don't keep anything frozen for more than 6 months.

I used tax payer money to get old lady frames to troll my family and sister at everyone's expense lol. Obviously the pair I bought out of pocket look nice and are good while the other pair just sits in a drawer.

Chicken: leg quarters, cheapest option
Beef: whole brisket, subprimal cuts & ground beef. Learning to butcher large cuts off beef saves more money and is more fun than breaking down a chicken.
Bread: homemade with freshly milled flour. costs us about $3/loaf
Other carbs: Sweet potatoes and potatoes, cheap dried pasta
Produce: whatever looks good and is cheap at the farmers market or aldi. This week was green leaf lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers.
Stuff like pasta sauce and fancy mustard we make ourselves.

I live rural. I drive into town monthly for food and supplies. It's a hard road. Two water crossings and many rock outcrops. I grow a limited selection of food. When it's winter, it's easier to just fly into town once, maybe twice in 4-5 months. I also check the post office and stock up on illicit drugs for me and my girlfriend. I also have chickens that produce now and then. I rarely feed them feed. Mostly forage. My father use to live with us but at the time we didn't have 911 service so he lives in Florida of all places now.

I have made a rule against processed junk foods so my shopping list is usually something like this:

1% milk
some kind of poultry
onions
garlic
root vegetable like beets or carrots
plain yogurt or cottage cheese
lentils or beans
some kind of grain like oats
canned tomatoes
eggs
usually some spice or tea
spinach
apples and bananas

I never buy cheap chicken because it looks, feels, smells, and tastes disgusting. On the other hand, I always buy the cheapest repack eggs possible.

Typically I make a months menu by what I'm feeling that day i go shopping, so if I want asian one day, burgers or pasta another and something like steak I take that into considerstion before i even look at the sale adverts.
Once I look at what is on sale I by so forth to make whatever out of those staples work.
Want asian, chuck or sirloin is on sale, I'm make beef and broccoli or beef chowmein, no beef sale? Pork lumpia or pork egg rolls with fried rice. I want pasta but only chicken is on sale? Alfredo it is.
Basically I build my meals around a protein.
Sides are really where I need to work though because i always misjudge and make too many sides. Tonight we had steak with artichokes and a salad, way too much food.

Yea. I make low carb chicken wraps 3-4 times a week for lunch and dinner the recipe I use now has been, by far the most interesting: smoke my chicken breasts for shredding, bit of cabbage, onion, cheese and a teaspoon of hidden valley secret sauce/chick fil a sauce. After awhile it does get boring so I'll vary the cheese/sauce add avo, or whatever, but it does make those home cooked meals so much better.

>How you people shop food?
Every 2-3 months I do a bulk buy meat order then freeze. Get 5kg of chicken, then vary the other bits, 2kg sausages / bacon / pork loin steaks / beef mince / joints of ham / pork / beef.
This gives me my base and just work from there.
>Do you make your own weekly/biweekly budget?
I shop once a week for bits for recipes that go with the meats and that weeks snacks. No real budget, just get stock back up if finished something or get some missing ingredients need for a recipe.
>Also you make a menu beforehand?
Yep, generally do a list of dinners for the week and shop based off of that.
>How you prepare it?
Tend to batch cook around 2-4 potions, eat 2 and freeze 2 if it's freezable if not I'll just do 2 potions.
Pic related, I knocked myself up an ingredients to recipe site which sorts out my cooking flow.

Break down your shopping into protein (pb, eggs, meats, fish), carbs (pasta, bread, flour), veg, fruits, herbs/spices, and grocery (soap etc). Then bookmark the ad pages of every store within range. Every week pop open the ads and see what the sales are. Over time you will get a sense of the real price of foods and what is a deal to spend on.

Eating healthy and whole foods is also best tasting and cheapest way to eat.

Some tips:

>Buy in bulk at the lowest price then shop for smaller amounts as you go
>find the discount aisles in each store you visit, they all have at least one area
>Immigrant markets are your FRIEND. Find where they are and get their ads.
>You can buy some food and toiletries online cheaper, and at higher quality (e.g., bulk bags of good rice, paper, etc)
>If you have the room freeze your on-sale protein and get your veg fresh
>Potatoes, onions, and carrots sell dirt cheap in bulk bags. Learn to cook with these.
>Rice is a staple and there are a thousand ways to eat it
>Learn recipes that stretch out proteins with vegetables, rice, and pastas
>oatmeal and oatmeal accessories
>search for deals on herbs and spices like a thirsty simp and over a long period of time you will build a formidable spice collection
>Buddy up with the deli and butcher personnel and they will hook you up

>shopping for food/grocery list
It's a continuous process. When I first got my own place/started cooking, it was expensive as hell, because I had 0 of the basics (oils, salt and seasonings, flour and other random shit like that), so every time I cooked something different, I was getting the whole list from scratch (mostly). Eventually, I had all of the basic seasonings stocked up, and it leveled out a lot more. Now I have a sorta adhered-to process:
>base bulk ingredients
Anything bulk I buy from costco.
>20lb bag of rice: <$20 (at least, 1.5 years ago when I last bought rice it was).
>5lb(?) dried black beans, might be 10lbs I dunno
>steel-cut oats, several lbs
>lentils
These are sorta my "bulk staples", I buy like once every 6 months to 2 years.
Next, I have a rotating list of "regular" meals and a bunch of "special" meals, which are more expensive. Lastly, I have cookbooks out the ass. I generally rotate through my regular meals, sometimes "special" meals (these depend on what's on-sale), and I'll mark a new recipe from cookbooks to cook every 2-4 weeks. My regular meals are like 4-5 recipes per meal-time. Every Sunday, I create a shopping list for the week, and plan my meals. I'll simultaneously look at what's on-sale that week at the grocery store I like to go to. If I see ingredients that are on my "special" list (I don't literally have 2 lists written out, I just have the recipes on hand and know which ones are more expensive), I'll buy what's on-sale and make it. Example: Anything with shrimp. Shrimp is expensive, but my store regularly puts it on sale for half-price. I'll make shrimp scampi, shrimp tacos, etc. when it's on sale.
If whatever is on sale I can bulk-buy, I will (shrimp, chicken, beef: stuff the freezer full).
So essentially: regular rotating meal-set unless some specific ingredients are on sale, in which case more upscale meals.
Finally, I love cooking, so every other Sunday I'll cook a totally novel, fancy recipe.

>Post how you shop for food.
Wife goes grocery shopping 2 to 3 times a week. Weekend is a bigger haul so we can do some meal prep for the week
>How you people shop food?
>Do you make your own weekly/biweekly budget?
Wife and I make over $500k annually, and coupled with our child-free life, grocery budgeting isn't something we are concerned with.
>Also you make a menu beforehand? How you prepare it? You rationalize it by protein/carbs/f & v/ shit fast or frozen food?
Usually protein based. Try to target seasonal produce
>Are your menus solely based on whats on sale beforehand?
No
>Also, what type of food you usually splurge on/avoid at any cost?
I avoid avocados that are over $0.99. Refusing to pay $1.50+ for a fucking guacamole fruit is a hill I will die on.
Splurge on cheeses, seafood, meat cuts.
