Funny enough, one of my go to my comfort foods is actually something I saw the cooks on an Army base making. It’s literally just a grilled cheese with a fried egg on it but it’s amazing in its simplicity and richness.

Freshly baked bread from any bakery near me, no matter if the bread is of good quality or not as long as it is hot.
I mostly do it since one time I finished a night shift and passed by a store when they were putting out-of-the-oven bread on their display racks. I bought a pair and couldn't stop eating them once I was back home.

I mean I love a nice steak, but is that really comfort food? Yeah it's comfy to eat a steak but I feel like an important part of comfort food is that is that its peasant food. Simple, cheap being almost necessary qualifiers otherwise you're just discussing tasty food in general.

one time I had some sesame oil in the cabinet, and she was over and cooking because you gotta let grandma cook, and she tossed some in, which is fine, but she just kept adding it and i was like uhh grandma, you know sesame oil is extremely strong right? turns out she'd never used sesame oil before
we made a triple batch that day just to tone down the sesame oil taste lmao.

I get what you mean about price, but what is simpler than a steak?
It's just a slab of meat cooked properly? Ultimately, even with just salt and pepper it'll still be good
I guess if cheap is added to the requirements, then I still have a soft spot for white trash old el paso tacos with raw vegetables on them. They're bad tacos but I like them
