18313100 No.18313100 [Reply] [Original]

Whether it’s because you’re a business dynamo with a busy schedule of A.M. meetings or just because you’re someone who enjoys sleeping in until the last possible second, it can be hard to find time for a full breakfast. Still, no one wants to go through their whole morning on an entirely empty stomach, so maybe you find yourself settling for a cup of coffee and a slice of toast.

If so, Japan’s Megmilk Snow Brand (also known as Yukijirushi Megmilk), has a way to streamline the process, with Yukijirushi Coffee Soft. “Soft” might seem like a strange way to describe coffee, but this isn’t a beverage. Instead it’s a spreadable coffee-flavored topping for toast.

That's because you didn't grow up with it. I hope you know that kanji itself uses different radicals which all have underlying meaning, and that kanji are not just random assortments of strokes, but a combination of these radicals to present the idea behind the word.

So yes, in fact, you can roughly know what a symbol means in kanji if you understand the foundation of the symbols.

His point remains that there are plenty of words in English you would not know the meaning of without looking them up because they don't really have any obvious root language. Like the word "Surreptitiously". You're not going to know what that is just by looking at it. Or the word "Skirring". Or "faineant".
