I lived in fish finger sandwiches for a few poverty weeks and swear by them as a poverty meal.

Using just bread, 4 store brand fish fingers and a dab of store brand tartare works out to be around 30 cents per meal, more filling than you’d think too. If youre some kind of wallstreet fat cat you can also add some lettuce and cheese to take it up a notch

>Boil water
>Open cup-o-soup

Joking aside, couldn't pizza be poverty food? Flour is cheap as shit, and you can make half a dozen medium sized pizza with a kg. Canned tomatoes are also cheap as fuck, as is yeast. So the only real expense would be cheese and whatever topping you prefer, and there's always some place that has cheese on sale. Hell, you can just make your own mozzarella from whole milk.

Anyway, it's weird seeing US prices coming close to Norwegian prices. Back when I was growing up and into my early 20s, every other place in the world, including most of Europe, was cheap as shit compared to Norway, as in the prices being something like 5:1. Now it's usually less than 2:1.
Going on a vacation as a Norwegian made you feel like a god, because everything was so fucking cheap. You could live in a 5 star hotel for pocket change.
Now you only feel like lesser nobility.

It’s not a “meme”. Stop using that word like a newfag. Instant noodles take longer to make which increases their cost. Unlike dry pasta, which is raw, instant noodles are precooked than dried. Overall the cost isn’t that much more unless you’re getting the fancy brands. A pack of instant Ramen is like $0.50 and you can cook it in an office microwave. That’s the appeal of them. Some of the more expensive brands aren’t better, they just have different packaging and include a sauce along with dried components instead of a flavor pack. Not sure why people buy them other than for social appeal. Nobody wants to be the guy with TopRamen in the office when others have AnnieChung or something.

So less than $1.50 with little effort for a tasty, nutritious meal. If you put some effort into being frugal and get stuff in bulk, you can cut that cost in half pretty easily.

I discovered cous cous back in college. It is a fairly inexpensive meal that fills for a whole afternoon, very tasty and can adapt to anything.
>Fill a soup plate with about 2/3 of what you'd like it to be
>Add hot water, enough to just about cover it
>By the two or three minute mark, add maybe a teaspoon of butter (eyeball it so it'd be 'loose' but not 'greasy'), remove it with a fork to get rid of the clumps.
>Add salt and pepper

That's the basic one. I personally add cumin powder and dried thyme (less than an euro per whole bottle), then some veggies (potato, carrot, onion, zucchini) very lightly pan fried, just enough to get rid of the raw taste. Maybe some chicken, maybe weiners, maybe worcestershire sauce, it really depends on you!

Sometimes I even add the couscous to the pan, let it fry along whitt the veggies.

Hope this helps, anons, back then it was less than 1.5 euros per meal. Nowadays with inflation is a bit more.

>she uses instant couscous
Isn't that more expensive than the real stuff? It's like $2 for a 200g box ($1.50 if you're lucky) while traditional couscous is $3 for 900g. Plus, the instant has much smaller granules which make for a, IMO, less enjoyable texture.
I haven't had couscous in years since I fired my Algerian cleaning lady, but she used to make some every Friday after her services and bring me a serving or two every now and again. Outside of mtewem/mtouem (lamb-and-garlic meatballs with slivered almonds in a paprika-heavy sauce) she wasn't a great cook, but I appreciated it. Before her, I thought I hated couscous for its texture but she introduced me to Tria brand (and this other, larger-grained brand I can't recall the name of rn) I realised it was just the instant stuff I disliked.
She wouldn't buy instant, she would joke, because I didn't pay her enough to afford it.

I dissolve the stock cube in tomato juice in addition to plain water. Adds another serving of veg to the stew per 150ml/5oz plus tomato juice has natural glutamates that up the overall savouriness of the dish.
For the amount of stew I made (400g beef, 140ish g each peas, shallots and carrot, 400g onion) 600ml tomato juice + 400ml water. I used too much onion, obviously. I wanted to mount a lot of it into the roux to sweeten the stew a bit but that amount made it a tad too sweet. I usually use half that amount of onion and add 200g of crushed, peeled tomato but I experimented a bit and the results weren't as good as tried-and-true.
Still good, though. Just not as good.

Let me tell you why that's bullshit:

>pound of beef [costs] $7-$12
$3/lb last week for 80/20, bro. I can even show you the ad, if you want.
>then you need buns
Fuck buns. $2 for 8 fucking sandwiches? Suck my dick, burger buns. Buy a goddamn loaf of white bread, like a real poor. $1.50 for /14 fucking sandwiches/.
>then you need cheese
Delis still sell sliced-to-order American cheese for, like, $4-$5/lb and one slice generally weighs half an ounce. You can ask for a half pound.
>then you need a side
I prefer salad as a burger side (and keep the vegetables off the burger itself) but if you want fries, they're literally cheap as chips. Saw a 28oz bag the other day for $2.50. An order of McDo large is 6oz. Would be even cheaper if homemade, but meh.
>then you need a drink
I like water, but if you want to go the fizzy drink route, $4 for a 12pack of 12oz cans.
>then you need the gas
Gas is generally negligible. You're not going to use more gas driving to the Piggly Fucking Wiggly than you would driving to McDonalds.
>and taxes
What the fuck are you even getting at twith this one? Taxes are included in the price of the groceries and your gas so I have no fucking clue what you're trying (and failing) to convey with that.
>whatever you're using to cook (oil, salt, seasoning, gas/charcoal/electric)
Literally all negligible.

>You can go to McDonalds for a full meal for 4 dollars
Nigga, are you hanging out with Brad and Janet cuz it sounds like you're doin' the time warp again. Can't get shit at McDonald's for $4 these days.

So say you have to buy a 3lb pack of beef.
That's $9 + $1.50 for the bread + $2.50 cheese + $2.50×3 fries + 15c cooking oil and salt + $4 for a 12 pack of soda = $24.65.
That makes 12 cheeseburgers, 12 servings of fries and a drink. Literally about half your imaginary $4 McDo pricetag.
And guess what? That's one trip to the store. You actually /save gas by cooking it yourself/.

There is nowhere in the US that beef is only 3 fucking dollars a pound, you are purposefully trying to cite a larger package during labor day sales as your proof, I guarantee it's what you'd have shown hence the mention of the ad. Depending on the area you might get a lucky regular price of ~6 at lowest, but nowhere in the country even in a rural town is it 3 fucking dollars. From here, I stopped reading the rest of your shit, you turned real food into "BUT I CAN JUST EAT A 'BURGER' MADE OF ONE SLICE OF BREAD AND 3 SPOONFULS OF MEAT! WHO NEEDS THE REST?!" while having a discussion comparing actual food not (regardless of the thread itself) poverty shit. At that point you may as well say just buy the beef and eat it with a fork. I will not bother with the rest because you're a fucking retard contrarian. I too can find a rat and eat it, that does not mean it's a cheaper real meal than eating a fucking double cheeseburger. You even bring up drinking water, salads, etc.

You are not talking about comparable things, you are "proving" something I never claimed. To make the same dish - minus all the chemical shit and who knows what - as you'd get with the same amount of food, same types of food, you'd get from a meal or value menu purchases at a fast food location you have to spend far more at home. Take your "BUT IT'S WAY CHEAPER IF YOU JUST EAT SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT JUST LENTILS AND WATER" shit and shove it. You fucking faggots need to stick to reddit where you can keep trying to prove each other wrong about things neither of you said, in this case I refuse to keep being one of those two players.

The discussion that was being had was about fast food vs cooking at home and how cooking at home is a million times cheaper than fast food. I was demonstrating that it simply is a falsehood to claim that fast food is pricier, it is not in any location or time in the past 30 years cheaper to cook at home something you can COMPARE to fast food. A cheeseburger is the #1 fast food ordered item, so it'd be pointless to bring up pasta. Pasta is not served at McDonalds, so there is no comparison to make of "is this MORE or LESS pricy to make at home?".

Why are you guys so fucking retarded? You can claim a burger is expensive, but that also just proves my point; you can get a burger for fucking $2 at any fast food place aside Taco Bell, yet making one at home will take far more money than that. Proving that you can get "expensive meals" for cheap from fast food, far cheaper than you could produce it at home.

Not him, but where I live (Ohio) you can get ground beef that cheap if you're willing to buy a big enough package of it. Pic related, $2.86 per pound for a 10 lbs package at Wal-Mart. The 3 and 5 lbs packages are more like $3.80/lb, but it's really not uncommon for sale prices to bring that down close to $3/lb. Buying in bulk during sales and freezing the excess is essential when you're poor, so it's also not unreasonable for him to set that as the standard. Sorry about your outrageous cost of living, but meat isn't overpriced everywhere.

It will only take more money in the short term to get the bulk items from the store, it ends up cheaper per-serving. Unlike fast food, you don't have to go to the store every single meal, you buy a freezer full of food and don't go back for weeks.

You can even get a full large-sized fucking meal at McDonalds AND nuggets on the side if you are that fat of a fuck for under 7 fucking dollars if you get a #7, and if you're a normal human that meal is only just barely over 5 bucks. This is the reality of almost every single "poverty meal" that people label as such.
The only "poverty" part of them is usually that you have to be poor to be miserable enough to eat like that.

It's never cheap ingredients painstakingly prepared to taste better and get you through more meals for less money (what actual poverty food would be), it's always expensive as hell processed, instant shit that no actual poor person would be able to regularly afford and live on.
