My grandma brought a whole frozen rabbit and wants to cook it. To be honest she is not a great cook (she just wants to stew it) and I believe I can do something better with it. Any rabbit ideas? I have never cooked it.

>> No.18290215

Stew it. Brown it first, obviously.

I'm sure someone will put this more eloquently, but basically you are fucking retarded and you dont even know it
stewing the rabbit is one of the few ways to cook rabbit well

>> No.18290218

rabbit is extremely lean I havent heard many good recipes with it other than stewing it.

Grilled or roasted rabbit is very dry. Only proper way is either a stew, or roasted with a bucket of sauce.
Which, some might argue, is a stew.
Also takes a long time to defrost so plan accordingly.

My grandma used to bake it in the oven, she added root vegetable, onions and garlic, some salt pepper and water in the roasting pan and put a lid on it so the meet would stew in the water.

There is almost literally nothing better to do with a rabbit than stew it except maybe oil poach it. My mum used to stew it in tomato sauce and my nan used to stew it in a peppery brown gravy made from vegetable broth.
Both dishes are fairly heavy on the added fat.

>>18290218
The Chinese rabbit dishes I've had are always so reliably oily, they may as well have oil poached it. Like... people talk about take away Chinese food being oily, but Chinese rabbit dishes have like 200ml of oil in them. They're good, but holy fuck are they oily.

>>18291204
That's not baking, that's braising, which is literally just stewing with indirect heat.

I shot a few back in the day and made some pies. The basic method is to make a stew and bake it in a crust.

The best two were:
1. Chicken stock, white wine, summer savory, tarragon, heavy cream, peas (basically rabbit ala king pie)

2. Duck stock, shallots, carrots, port.

You can make the top of the pies with puff pastry for extra yum.

Apparently there's a thing called Rabbit Starvation where you can die of Protein Poisoning even with a belly full of meat, because rabbit is so goddamn lean or whatever.

You can avoid protein poisoning if you eat the brains and entrails (in a survival situation) or just using oil when cooking it.
